Jigawa local govt bans men, women from meeting at night

0

The Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Monday, enacted a bye-law banning members of the opposite sex from meeting at night.

The local government said this was due to rampant cases of out of wedlock pregnancy among girls.

The local government information officer, Sanusi Doro, said the council chairman, Salisu Kubayo, signed the law after ten councilors of the local government area unanimously agreed to it during a council meeting.

According to the new law, henceforth, members of the opposite sex (even lovers) found violating the law would be sentenced to six months in prison with an option of N50,000 fine.

Mr Doro said true lovers can only meet during the day to discuss. The signing of the law was done in a ceremony widely attended by residents of the area including the chief imam of the community.

Also, the leader of the local government’s councillors, Sa’idu Marma, said enacting the law becomes paramount following growing complaints from parents about incidences of out of wedlock pregnancy allegedly due to the night meetings and discussion between the opposite sexes.

Mr Marma added that as leaders they would be held responsible for the success as well as failure in the council area. He said fornication and unwanted pregnancy among girls is a major challenge bedeviling the council area which necessitated the enactment of the law.

Also at the event, the Chief Imam of Kirikasamma local government, Ali Liman, lamented the alien tradition of boys and girls frequently partying at various locations in the council area. He said this has resulted in many immoral activities between the opposite genders.

Mr Liman commended the council chairman on the new law. He said it would help in addressing the social vices which have become a nightmare for parents in the council area.

At the event, none of the officials discussed why modern family planning techniques, such as access to contraceptives, was not considered as an alternative to the unplanned pregnancies.

Jigawa, in North-western Nigeria, like most parts of the region, is a largely conservative state whose residents are predominantly Muslims.

The new law in the Jigawa council area comes days after Kano State banned members of the opposite sex from boarding the same commercial tricycles.

Farmers herders conflict
Meanwhile the local council also enacted a law that bans night grazing by herders in the area. The official said the council spent a lot of money monthly on logistics and other issues bordering on farmers and herders conflict.

Kirikasamma local government located in Jigawa northeast is blessed with fertile land. Herders and farmers often clash in the local government over grazing rights, sometimes leading to deaths.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join hands with his administration in taking Nigeria to the Next Level.

Addressing a press conference in Lagos on Monday, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture described the outgoing year 2019 as a momentous year, saying President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has taken Nigeria closer to its Next Level target.

We urge the opposition to join hands with us to move Nigeria to the Next Level, instead of engaging in scorched-earth opposition that benefits no one”.

“2019 has been a momentous year, and this Administration has taken Nigeria closer to its Next Level target. The economy has continued to witness a strong performance, building on the steady recovery since the last recession”.

Nigeria has not reached its debt ceiling of 25% in total public debt stock to GDP (Debt/GDP), as it is currently on 18.99%, but its debt service to revenue ratio has been higher than desirable, which explains why the government is moving ahead with its economic diversification efforts, in addition to increasing oil and non-oil revenues and widening the tax base,” he said.

An official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp, Sani Yahaya, has been arrested for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.

Yahaya was arrested by the corps following a complaint lodged against him by the father of the girl, who reported the matter at the NSCDC office in Gusau.

Narrating the ordeal to our reporter, the father of the girl said the NSCDC official lured his daughter with fruits into a vacant house at Samaru area, Gusau where Yahaya was posted as a security guard.

“My daughter was sent on an errand by her mother close to the house where the NSCDC official was attached to.

“As she was passing along the road, he asked her to come into the house to collect fruits. That was how he got the girl and forcefully defiled her,” the father said.

He maintained that the girl was crying in the house which attracted the attention of passersby who immediately barged in.

The father said he reported the case at the headquarters of the NSCDC and Yahaya was arrested.

The spokesperson for the NSCDC in the state, Mr Aminu Maru, confirmed Yahaha’s arrest.

He said, “The officer is in our custody. The father of the girl reported the case at the command’s headquarters through the Intelligence and Investigation Department, complaining against one of our staff members, Sani Yahaya on alleged rape.

“While investigating the issue, the suspect said he did not have the carnal knowledge of the girl, confirming however that he grabbed her into a room where he gave her two nuts of umbrella tree.

“After dragging her into the room, the suspect said he started to have a romance with the girl and also confessed that he reached climax while romancing with the girl but did not penetrate into her private parts.”

I’ll open can of worms that’ll make Edo people stone Oshiomhole – APC stalwart

0

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Kabiru Adjoto, yesterday, said he will open a can of worms that will make Edo people to stone APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, on the streets.

He said the can of worms would seal the political fate of the Edo State former governor.

Adjoto also vowed to organise a national protest, tagged: ‘Oshiomhole Must Go’, against the former Edo governor in the New Year.

The immediate past speaker of the state House of Assembly, who told party members at his country home at Ikakumo in Igarraland in Edo, said the protest will kick off early next year with thousands of corroborators across the 36 states of the federation.

“The protest will be unabated until Oshiomhole honourably resigns before he buries the APC,’’ Adjoto said.

The APC chieftain, who is currently the special adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki, said he would soon open “a can of worms that would seal the political fate of Oshiomhole.’’

According to him, the can of worms when opened, will make Edo people to stone the former Edo governor, who is currently battling his political survival in the ruling APC in Edo.

“As I promised a few months ago, I am set to open horrible a can of worms that will make Edo people to stone Oshiomhole on the street as we enter the New Year.’’

Adjoto, however, did not disclose the `sins’ of Oshiomhole that would make the masses to rise against their former two-term governor.

Oshiomhole has been pitted in a political battle against Obaseki as the countdown to the governorship election in the state draws near.

Edo State is scheduled for governorship poll in August next year, in an election expected to be characterised by back-stabbing, betrayals and violence.

Adjoto also spoke on the speculation that Obaseki was planning to defect to the People’s Democratic Party, describing the speculation as baseless.

“The governor will enjoy the ‘privilege of first refusal’ during the forthcoming APC governorship primary as enjoyed by Oshiomhole in 2012,’’ he said.

The former speaker said the APC national chairman was driving himself into “irredeemable political oblivion because of sheer greed and hypocrisy.”
He said Oshiomhole had played god severally by hypocritically reversing himself on principles that fetched him enormous political fortunes.

“Oshiomhole became governor on the heels of fighting godfathers and the tenets of one man, one vote.

“He has now turned himself into not just a godfather but an untamed emperor, who is fully out to ruin the gains of democracy.

“He has also, at different fora, ridiculed the nation’s judiciary which gave him the ladder to climb to power,” Adjoto said.

At the event, the Woman Leader of the APC, Ward 7 in Akoko-Edo, Mrs Victoria Balogun, described Adjoto as a grassroots politician with a cult of following.

She lauded Adjoto for making positive impacts on the lives of the people of his community, assuring the former speaker that women in Akoko-Edo would support the re-election of Obaseki.
