Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reiterated that the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition will prioritize the interests of Nigerians in all its decisions.
Obi reaffirmed his support for adopting the ADC as the united platform for opposition parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections, aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu. He said the decision reflects a shared commitment to delivering competent, compassionate, and people-centered leadership to the country.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, the former Anambra State governor revealed that the coalition’s choice to rally under the ADC banner followed “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s current challenges and the urgent need for a new national direction.
“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections, with Distinguished Senator David Mark appointed as National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary,” Obi wrote.
“Our commitment is to work together and make sacrifices to ensure that by 2027, Nigeria gets the kind of leadership it deserves—competent, capable, and compassionate. A leadership that puts the welfare of Nigerians above all else.”
Highlighting the importance of unity among opposition forces, Obi noted, “No single group can transform Nigeria on its own. To overcome the systems that have entrenched poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls—even when those bridges are difficult to construct.”
Earlier, PUNCH Online reported that the coalition—which includes key political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other opposition leaders—formally announced the ADC as its political platform during an event held Wednesday at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
At the unveiling, David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola were named as the interim National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC, respectively, as the coalition begins its campaign to challenge President Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027.
