Football fans are in mourning for Diogo Jota, a forward for Liverpool, and his younger brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, who was also a professional football player for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
According to AFP, the siblings died in a car crash on Thursday in northwestern Spain, just weeks after Jota celebrated his wedding. The incident occurred when their vehicle veered off a motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora province, the Civil Guard confirmed.
André Silva, aged 25, was born on April 28, 2000, in Gondomar, Portugal. Like his older brother, André had a promising football career. Primarily an attacking midfielder, he was also adept as a left winger and centre-forward. Standing at 1.68 meters and known for his right-footed play, André had recently reached his highest market value of €450,000 as of June 23, 2025.
André’s football journey began in 2008 with Gondomar SC before he joined the youth academy of FC Porto. Throughout his career, he represented several clubs, including Famalicão U23, Boavista U23, Gondomar, and Penafiel. His transfers between clubs were free moves, reflecting a steady rise within the Portuguese football leagues.
The tragic deaths of the two brothers have cast a heavy shadow over the football community. Fans and fellow players mourn not only the loss of talented athletes but also the close bond they shared — united by family ties and their lifelong passion for the beautiful game.
