The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, urging him to resign from the party following his endorsement of a new political coalition aimed at challenging the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.
This demand was made in a statement released on Thursday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja.
According to Ifoh, the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership strongly opposes the coalition, describing its members as “power-hungry politicians” who do not represent the ideals of a “new Nigeria.” He argued that the coalition comprises figures who have misgoverned the country in the past and therefore lack the credibility to lead meaningful change.
“We will not accommodate individuals with dual loyalties. Anyone affiliated with the coalition must resign from the Labour Party within 48 hours,” Ifoh stated. He also alleged that Peter Obi has been lobbying Labour Party members to join his new political platform, although many have reportedly declined.
The statement emphasized that the dream of a new Nigeria cannot be achieved by aligning with “recycled and desperate politicians,” adding that only the Labour Party can lead the country toward genuine transformation.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has reaffirmed his support for the new coalition of opposition parties, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 elections. The coalition is led by former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi said, “No single group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle structures that perpetuate poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges—however uneasy they may be.”
He added that the coalition is committed to delivering competent and compassionate leadership and that the decision to join forces was based on deep reflection and a shared desire for national progress.
