Chief Sam Onuigbo, sponsor of Nigeria’s Climate Change Act and former representative of Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, continues to receive international recognition for his pivotal role in advancing climate change discourse.
Currently, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, he is actively participating in two major global events: the 15th Session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly and the World Future Energy Summit, part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit 2025, which concludes on January 16, 2025.
Widely regarded as the “Father of Climate Change” in Nigeria and affectionately called “Mr. Climate Change” by many, Chief Onuigbo has already contributed to the IRENA Innovation Day Panel Discussion.

This high-profile panel included notable figures such as Norela Constantinescu, Deputy Director at IRENA’s Innovation and Technology Center; Asami Miketa, Head of IRENA’s Energy Transition Planning Power Sector Transformation; Patrick Westman, Global Head of Strategy & Policy at ENGIE Energy Access; and other distinguished experts from around the world.
The discussion centered on the critical role of innovation in building climate resilience and fostering sustainable economic growth. Panelists emphasized the importance of integrating diverse sectors to achieve inclusive green development.
Speaking at the session, Chief Onuigbo, who also serves as the Southeast representative on the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission, where he chairs the Committee on Security, Climate Change, and Special Interventions, highlighted Nigeria’s vast potential for investment.
He urged international investors to explore opportunities in Nigerian startups, innovative technologies, and other profitable sectors. Onuigbo described Nigeria’s youthful, educated population as a driving force for creativity and productivity, making the country an attractive destination for investment.
Echoing Onuigbo’s sentiments, President Bola Tinubu had earlier addressed the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, emphasizing the need for global collaboration, stating: “To succeed, we must innovate, collaborate, and decisively work together as a global community.”
Chief Onuigbo’s ongoing efforts continue to position Nigeria as a significant player in the global climate change and sustainability movement.
