The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the federal government to standardize the retirement age across the civil service, demanding an increase to 65 years or 40 years of service for all public servants—mirroring conditions already granted to teachers, health workers, and judges.
Speaking during the 2024 May Day celebration at Eagle Square in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero presented the union’s key demands, stressing the need for equity in retirement policy.
“It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges to all public servants,” Ajaero said.
He argued that such a policy shift would not only ensure fairness but also improve morale and drive greater efficiency across the public sector.
