Earthquake death toll in Afghanistan exceeds 920

At least 920 people have been killed and about 620 others injured in an earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management Sharafuddin Muslim said on Wednesday. His statement was broadcast by the TOLOnews TV channel.

Earlier it was reported that 300 people became victims of the natural disaster and about 600 people received injuries of different degrees of severity.

Muslim said 100,000 afghanis ($1,100) will be paid to the families of the dead and 50,000 afghanis ($560) to the families of the injured.

The earthquake struck last night in the Afghan provinces of Paktika and Khost. According to local authorities, search and rescue operations are currently underway in the disaster area.
