Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has dismissed fears that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is too weakened to recover ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that even in its perceived low moments, the party remains stronger than most others in Nigeria.
Speaking at a South East PDP stakeholders’ meeting, Ikpeazu emphasized the importance of unity among party leaders in the region, calling on warring factions to embrace peace and await the outcome of the reconciliation efforts being championed by former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki.
“Even in what some may call its weakest moment, the ghost of the PDP is stronger than most political parties in this country,” Ikpeazu stated. “That’s why we must be careful not to destroy what we have built over the years. We should close ranks, respect constituted authority, and allow peace to reign.”
The reconciliation committee, chaired by Saraki, was recently formed by serving and former PDP governors to ensure harmony and a rancour-free National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and National Convention.
Ikpeazu also appealed to aggrieved members of the party in the South East to allow the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to complete his tenure, which ends in December.
“Is there anything we have asked Senator Anyanwu to do as national secretary that he has not done?” he asked. “We must not allow ourselves to be distracted as a party, no matter the provocation.”
Expressing concern over the actions of some party leaders in the zone who allegedly ignore the Supreme Court judgment affirming Anyanwu’s position, Ikpeazu warned that such disregard could further destabilize the party’s chances in 2027.
He urged all stakeholders in the South East to prioritize unity and work collectively to secure victory for the PDP in the upcoming elections.
