The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Hon. Peter Azubuike, has expressed confidence that the party is firmly positioned to dominate the 2027 General Elections, declaring that if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were to conduct elections today, Labour Party candidates would secure victory across the state before 2 p.m.
Azubuike made the declaration during an interactive media engagement with journalists at the Labour Party State Secretariat in Umuahia, where he said the party has overcome its internal challenges and is fully prepared for the next electoral cycle.
According to him, the Labour Party remains the strongest grassroots political platform in Abia State, citing its extensive political presence and elected representatives across various levels of government.
“We are the only political party with a strong grassroots presence. We have 184 councillors, 17 local government chairmen, and 20 members of the Abia State House of Assembly. That is evidence of our widespread acceptance and grassroots support,” he said.
The state chairman noted that the party’s adoption of the direct primary system was intended to guarantee transparency, credibility, and a rancour-free process in the selection of candidates for the 2027 elections.
Reacting to reports that only one nomination form was purchased in some constituencies, Azubuike dismissed the claims, insisting that the reports did not reflect the reality of the party’s primary process.
“It is not true that only one form was sold. In several constituencies, multiple aspirants purchased nomination forms. In fact, not all sitting lawmakers secured the party’s ticket. A good example is the Obingwa/Osisioma/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, where the incumbent member did not obtain the party’s return ticket,” he stated.
Azubuike said the Labour Party has continued to strengthen its structures from the ward level through the local government areas to the state level, expressing confidence that the party would once again secure an overwhelming mandate from Abia voters in 2027.
“We have built a strong leadership structure from the wards to the local governments and the state. We are confident that the Labour Party will record a massive victory in the 2027 general elections,” he said.
On the leadership of the party at the national level, the LP chairman maintained that the leadership headed by Senator Nenadi Usman remains the one recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the party has already gained access to the INEC portal for uploading the names of its candidates, describing it as an indication that the electoral body recognises the current national leadership.
Azubuike reiterated the Labour Party’s commitment to internal democracy, grassroots mobilisation, and effective leadership, saying the party remains focused on consolidating its achievements as preparations for the 2027 General Elections gather momentum.
