Russia PM Medvedev Resigns Over Putin’s Reforms

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced on Wednesday that he and the rest of the Russian government were resigning, Russian news agencies reported.

The announcement came on the heels of President Vladimir Putin’s annual speech to lawmakers where he proposed a series of constitutional reforms that would grant more powers to parliament — including the ability to select the prime minister.

The changes would make significant changes to the country’s balance of power and so “the government in its current form has resigned,” Medvedev said on state television while seated next to Putin.

The prime minister said the move was aimed at clearing the way for the changes to be made. Putin earlier said the constitutional amendments would be put to a referendum.

Putin said that he was “satisfied with the government’s performance” although the government failed to fulfill certain tasks, reported  news agency Interfax.

Imo governor-elect Uzodinma freezes state bank accounts

The governor-elect of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has given an order to all financial institutions where the state funds are maintained not to honour any draft till further notice.

This order came a few hours after that the Supreme Court declared him the duly elected governor of the state on Tuesday.

A letter addressed to the regional directors and managers of all the financial institutions in Imo state and signed by Cosmos Iwu, director-general of Senator Hope Uzodinma campaign organization on behalf of the governor-elect, ordered the financial institutions to “post no debit ” on all the accounts of the state domiciled in their banks till further directive.

The letter which was entitled, “Order of post no debit on all accounts of Imo state government effective immediately 14 January 2020” stated that the order was a sequel to the apex court judgment which declared Uzodinma the new governor of the state.

The three-paragraph letter which was sighted by our correspondent in Owerri on Wednesday read, “Following the Supreme Court judgment of 14 January 2020, I am directed by his excellency, Senator Hope Uzodinma to take this as your authority/instruction to place a post no debit order on all accounts of the Imo state government maintained in your various institutions.

“You are by this letter directed to comply and await further instruction from the office of his excellency, the executive governor of Imo state. Thanks for your cooperation “

Supreme Court Ruling: Ihedioha will overcome setback, says Atiku

The 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday urged aggrieved members of the party in Imo State not to despair over the nullification of the electoral victory of the PDP 2019 governorship candidate in Imo, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had nullified Ihedioha’s victory and ordered that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Hope Uzodinma, be sworn in as the governor.

Atiku in a statement said that Ihedioha, in the fullness of time, will overcome his setback and emerge stronger.

The ex-Vice President stated that since the Supreme Court is final, everybody must accept its judgment, however unexpected and unpalatable it may be.

Atiku said, “Let me state unequivocally that I solidarize with Emeka Ihedioha, a man I know to be a great leader of men and resources. In the fullness of time, I am convinced that he will overcome this setback and emerge stronger.

“I also stand fully with the PDP. In good and bad times, we must continue to be the object of hope that the Nigerian people have for their escape from the prevailing despotism and despair that has gripped almost every aspect of our national life. We provided genuine democracy for this nation once before, and I believe it is our destiny to democratically restore what has been lost due to the encroachment of anti-democratic agents.”

“Philosophers have said that tough times never last, but that tough people do. I urge the people of Imo and the entirety of the Nigerian people not to give in to despair. This nation has gone through despotic times before, and we have survived them and thrived. I am very certain that this history will repeat itself.

“My greatest desire, and one I hope to see again in my lifetime, is that Nigeria will fulfil its potential as the land of Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress. These four ideals have been missing from our borders for a while, and all freedom-loving Nigerians ought to henceforth work together to bring them back. So help us, God.”

Ikpeazu To Council Chairmen: “Don’t Abandon Your Predecessors Projects”

Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed Transition Council Chairmen not to abandon projects initiated their predecessors in the state.

The Governor gave the directive in a statement signed by Chief John Okiyi Kalu, the state Commissioner for Information and made available to ABN TV on Wednesday.

Governor Ikpeazu said the council chairmen should rather focus on completing all ongoing projects before embarking on new ones.

“The Commissioner for Special Duties, Joint Projects, Chief John Okoro, and his counterpart in Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir Gabriel Onyendilefu, are hereby directed to monitor and ensure full compliance with this directive.

“Of particular interest are the ongoing Ozuitem Water Scheme and Amoji Imenyi Bridge in Bende LGA, Akara motor park in Isuikwuato LGA, among others in all the 17 LGAs”, the statement added.

APC vice-chair attacks Adam Oshiomhole, alleges imposition

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Adams Oshiomhole allegedly got into a shouting match with the APC National Vice-Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, during the party’s National Working Committee meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

Our correspondent, who was at the National Secretariat of the party, heard some people at the meeting making a lot of noise, with some banging tables.

Salihu, who stormed out of the meeting, later confirmed that he clashed with Oshiomhole.

He said the noise was over the ex-Edo governor’s alleged attempt to impose a former member of the presidential campaign council, Waziri Bulama, as National Secretary of the party.

According to him, the decision did not follow due process and endorsement of the Zonal Executive Committee.

The position became vacant after Mai Mala Buni resigned his appointment to contest last year’s Yobe State governorship poll, which he won.

Salihu insisted that Oshiomhole had ceased to be the national chairman of the party because of a court order upholding his suspension by his Iyamho ward in Edo State.

He said, “Unless I see the reversal of the court order suspending Oshiomhole as the APC National Chairman, I won’t allow him to sit here as the national chairman.”

Salihu accused Oshiomhole of name-dropping whenever he wanted to have his way.

He said, “This is an illegality, the party has set a precedent. When Babachir Lawal left to become the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, I replaced him from Adamawa. When Alhaji Lai Mohammed left his post as the National Publicity Secretary to the party to become a minister, Bolaji Abdullahi from Kwara replaced him.

“He (Oshiomhole) keeps dropping names whenever he wants to perpetuate illegality. He doesn’t have the right to call for nomination.”

But the National Legal Adviser of the party, Babatunde Ogala, said he was not aware of any order validating Oshiomhole’s suspension.

Explaining how Bulama emerged, Ogala told journalists that he was the one who moved the motion at the meeting for his appointment as acting National Secretary pending the party’s convention.

He also denied knowledge of any shouting match at the meeting.

Salihu warned that the process leading to Bulama’s emergence could land the party in court.

He said, “Yesterday (Monday) we held our zonal meeting and we agreed on how to go about the position of National Secretary.

A statement issued by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu quoted Mr Buhari as saying: “The road to justice may be long and tortuous, but it is the best path for anyone aggrieved.

“Under the new administration, a new journey to build a new Imo with new energy is about to begin. In this outcome, it is the people of Imo State who have emerged victorious,” he said.

In congratulating the new governor, President Buhari urged Mr Uzodinma to promote the ideals of the APC and unite the state by running an inclusive administration.

Why we can’t give Hope Uzodinma Certificate of Return – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday said it cannot issue a Certificate of Return to the new Governor of Imo state, Sen. Hope Uzodinma because it has not been served with the order of the Supreme Court to that effect.

The Commission in a terse statement by the Chief Press Secretary to its Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi however promised to do the needful once it received the enrolled order.

“Please be informed that the Commission is yet to be served with the enrolled order of the Supreme Court judgement, therefore, we cannot issue the Certificate of Return to the APC candidate yet. However, once the Commission receives the enrolled order, the CoR will be issued”, INEC stated.

The Supreme Court had on Tuesday sacked Hon. Emeka Ihedioha as governor of the state, and consequently went to affirm the election of Uzodinma in his stead.

In the lead judgement read by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the apex court ruled that records before it proved that election results from 388 polling units during the election, were unlawfully excluded from the overall collated results that declared Ihedioha winner of the state governorship election.

Amotekun Has Come To Stay, Says Soyinka

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has declared that the establishment of Operation Amotekun by Southwest governors ‘has come to stay irrespective of its legality’.

Soyinka said the supplementary security outfit launched in Ibadan last week, came up as a result of series of meetings by the leaders of the region to curb insecurity issues that the existing security bodies have not been able to put an end to.

The Nobel Laureate prize winner made this known at the ongoing press conference at his Kongi’s Harvest Art Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos, opposing the Justice Minister and Attorney-general of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who declared the security outfit illegal.

“Amotekun is a result of meetings to curb menace in the region,” he said.

“Some people who have been sleeping all this time, taking belated actions while villages are been wiped out are now telling us this…that people do not have right to flush out the evil ones among them which the exiting security outfits have not been able to do.”

“I think they should go back to sleep because Amotekun has come to stay,” he added.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Worldwide congratulates Uzodinma on Supreme Court victory

The Youth Wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has congratulated Sen. Hope Uzodinma on his Supreme Court victory on Tuesday, saying that it is a `victory well deserved’.

It said that the Supreme Court had once again reassured the masses that the court remained the last hope of the common man.

The National Publicity Secretary of the group, Chief Osmond Nkeoma made this known in a statement he made available to ABN TV on Tuesday.

He thanked God for the success of Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the apex court maintaining that the former senator was a man so much loved by the Imo people.

He said that Igbo youths had no doubt in the capacity of Uzodinma to deliver the true dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

The group expressed gratitude to God for the victory and called on all Imo people to join hands and support the new governor whom they described as an `experienced lawmaker’.

They said he was also prepared to confront the challenges facing the state.

ABN TV recalls that the Supreme Court on Tuesday sacked Chief Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of the state and declared Uzodinma as the winner of the March 9, 2019 gubernatorial election.
