Court Judgement: Gov. Ikpeazu is child of destiny – Abia CoS, Agbazuere

The Chief of Staff to the Abia State Government, Chief ACB Agbazuere, has described Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as a child of destiny following his victory on Wednesday on election petition at the Supreme Court.

ABN TV recalls that the Supreme Court had in a unanimous judgement read by Justice Paul Galinje, a member of the seven-member panel, affirmed the election of Okezie Ikpeazu as the governor of Abia State.

Dr Alex Otti had taken the election matter to the Apex Court after the Election Petition Tribunal and Appeal Court upheld the election of the governor.

Galinje said the appellant’s reliance solely on the smart card readers in proving the alleged over-voting was fatal to his case and that the law was clear that the petitioner must tender the voter’s register, and should relate the document to the specific area where the documents were affected.

Agbazuere told NAN in Abuja that the judgement of the Supreme Court was a clear indication that Abia is a “God own state”.

“This is the third time Alex Otti is taking Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu to court and this is the third time he is winning him; this is the last point.

“The enemies had wished that things change but the Lord has spoken and when God choose a man, no man can thwart it because Okezie Victor Ikpeazu is a child of destiny.

“I urge others in the opposition to have a rethink and repent; our God is a jealous God and if He advises you and you refuse to take His advice, whatever you see you take.

“I urge Abians to remain steadfast in their support and solidarity for the governor who is destined to lead us at a time like this,” Agbazuere said.

Governor Ikpeazu was re-elected as the governor of Abia state after winning the March 9 gubernatorial election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party after a successful first term.

UK Foreign Secretary calls for “full and transparent” investigation into Ukrainian plane crash

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has called for a “full and transparent” investigation into the fatal crash of a Ukraine International Airlines flight in Tehran on Wednesday, citing intelligence reports which claim the plane was shot down by Iranian surface to air missiles. 

“We urgently need a full and transparent investigation to establish what caused the crash,” Raab said in a statement Friday, citing a “body of information” which suggests that the plane was “shot down by an Iranian Surface to Air Missile.”

“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, including the four British nationals who lost their lives,” the foreign secretary added.

In response to the “heightened tensions” in the region, the UK Foreign Office has advised British nationals against all travel to Iran and has also recommended against taking flights from and within Iran.

Billionaire to give away $9 million to Twitter followers to see if money makes them happier

A Japanese billionaire will give away more than $9 million to 1,000 people on Twitter to see if it improves their happiness. All they had to do to get it was retweet him.

Online shopping mogul Yusaku Maezawa will divvy up 1 billion yen (around $9 million) among the Twitter users. Winners will end up with a million yen each (roughly $9,100).
In an announcement on YouTube, the tech tycoon called the contest a “serious social trial” to see what impact a million yen could have on a person’s life.
In the video explaining the contest, Maezawa urged contestants to use the money “as they like” and to answer regular questionnaires about how they’re using it.
Almost anybody was eligible to receive the small piece of Maezawa’s fortune. All they had to do was join Twitter and retweet the announcement tweet before midnight on January 7.
More than 4 million people heeded his call and retweeted. A lottery will determine the winners, and Maezawa will personally notify them in a direct message within two to three days.
Maezawa also said he would contact the lucky winners afterwards to ask about the impact, and called for social scientists to help analyze the results of the experiment.

Iran Plane Crash: The victims of Ukraine flight by nationality

A Ukrainian aeroplane carrying 176 passengers crashed minutes after taking off early Wednesday from Iran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, killing all passengers and crew members on board.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown, although Iran cited “technical problems.” As the investigation continues, Ukraine’s embassy in Tehran issued a statement ruling out terrorism and then removed it.

The fatal crash unfolded during a particularly tense time in the region: In a growing conflict with the United States, triggered by the killing of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, Iran fired more than a dozen missiles targeting Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops four hours before the Ukraine International Airlines jet went down.

The victims include 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, in addition to nine Ukrainian crew members, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three Britons, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry. More than 140 passengers were Iranian nationals, according to Iranian officials, suggesting that many possessed dual citizenship.

Already intelligence sources from the United States reported that the plane was downed by a Russian made surface to air missiles, while Iranian authorities declared that it was due to technical problems.

13-year-old pupil, Oladipo Adesiyan develops website for his school

A 13-year-old pupil, Oladipo Adesiyan, has developed a website for his school, Messiah High School, Akure, Ondo State.

In an interview, Adesiyan said the passion for web designing started during the long vacation of 2018.

“It all started one afternoon after my school had closed for the long holiday. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t collect my result that term. Although it was painful, I had enough time to think. I began to think of different ways that pupils could view their results online. So I did a lot of research and I settled for an e-portal for the school.

“I had always loved to create and design websites since I was in primary school. Although, I didn’t create any website then, I started web development with codes in February 2019,” Adesiyan said.

The Senior Secondary School 2 pupil said although his father supported his vision, it took long before his mother bought into the idea.

He said, “My dad has never liked the idea and mum initially saw it as a waste of time. But when she saw the kind of stuff I did with the school website she became one of my fans.”

The Principal of Adesiyan’s school, Mrs Stella Ajibola, advised parents not to choose careers for their children, but encourage them to pursue their dreams.

“We are encouraging Oladipo Adesiyan to pursue his dream. We plan to give him something tangible for building a website for our school. Also, we will try our best to help him develop his talents.

“Parents should not choose professions for their children. Success in any vocation or profession is achievable where the passion subsists. Talented ones should be given the freedom to pursue their chosen careers,” she said.

FG cuts Enugu airport repairs cost by N1.5bn

The House of Representatives on Thursday met with the contractor handling the rehabilitation of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State, for timely completion of the project valued at N10bn.

It was disclosed at the meeting that the Federal Government had done a downward review of the contract sum to N8.5bn.

The repairs have been scheduled for completion before the Easter celebration in April.

Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, Mr Nnoli Nnaji, and other stakeholders at the meeting expressed concerns over the competence of the contractor engaged to rehabilitate the airport in 2010, which collapsed before 2016.

At the meeting, Mr David Emerson, who spoke on behalf of the contractor said the repairs would be accelerated.

Emerson, however, called for the intervention of the committee towards ending the hostility by the host communities where the quarry is located.

He said, “We have visited a lot of quarries producing stones that meet specifications. We are worried about getting the stones within the compressed time as communities are blocking our trucks.”

The Managing Director, FAAN, Captain Rabiu Yadudu, said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), approved N10bn but the actual amount eventually required for the contract was N8.5bn.

He said this left a surplus of N1.5bn in the coffer of the Ministry of Aviation.

On his part, the consultant engaged by the ministry, Mohammed Baba, expressed optimism that Boeing 747-400 series fully loaded should be able to land and take off from at the airport when the upgrading had been completed.

The committee lawmakers, which insisted on timely completion of the project, resolved to embark on an oversight visit to the facility within three weeks to ascertain the level of work done so far.

Nnoli, who disclosed that the contract was awarded to PW above other local contractors because of its track record, urged the contractor to synergise with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State towards resolving the problem with the communities.

52 year-old woman bathes grand-kids with pepper, chain them naked for eating without permission

A grandma has been arrested by police in Nigeria’s southern state of Rivers following reports she gave two grandchildren a peppered water bath and thereafter chained them, stripped.

She then locked up the female kids, aged 7 and 8 up like a jailor.

According to the police, the 52-year-old woman, simply called Mama Vera, gave the kids the horrendous punishment because they ate garri, a popular staple made from cassava and mixed it with sugar, like a meal without her consent.

The incident happened at Mgbuoba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Witnesses said concerned neighbours had to break into the house when they heard the wailing children calling for help.

The police who arrested the woman is also accusing her of denying the children their rights to go to school.

A lawyer, Precious Johnmark, who also witnessed the incident is calling on the Rivers State Police Command and the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, to follow the case and ensure the prosecution of Mama Vera for allegedly violating the rights of the girls.

SERAP demands release of Shehu Sani

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately release former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani.

Operatives of EFCC on Thursday reportedly invaded the Abuja residence of Senator Shehu Sani over alleged extortion.

It was gathered that the EFCC officials stormed the apartment in Wuse, Abuja at about 3:30 pm on Wednesday to look for incriminating evidence against the former Kaduna senator.

This is following arrest of Sani last week for alleged extortion of $20,000 from the owner of ASD Motors.

The government critic, who represented Kaduna central senatorial district between 2015 and 2019, allegedly collected money from Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors, promising to pass it on to Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the anti-graft agency.

Reacting, in a post on its official Twitter page, SERAP called on EFCC to charge Sani with a recognizable criminal offence rather than prolonging his detention.

The group noted that the continued detention of Sani without charge was against the principle of being innocent until proven guilty.

SERAP, therefore, urged the anti-graft agency to release Sani on bail pending investigation.

The post reads: “EFCC should immediately release activist Shehu Sani detained on allegations of extortion or charge him with a recognizable criminal offence.

“By prolonging his detention without charge or trial, Mr Sani is being treated like a convicted criminal, in violation of national and international law.

“The continued detention of Mr Sani without charge is against the principle of being innocent until proven guilty.

“Nigeria is a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Article 9 of the ICCPR states that “anyone who is arrested shall be brought promptly before a judge or other officer authorized by law to exercise judicial power.”

“There are similar provisions in the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).

“The EFCC should promptly investigate any allegations against Mr Sani and release him on bail pending the conclusion of any such investigation.

Lionel Messi & Joao Felix separated after HEATED face-off in Spanish Super Cup Semi-Final

Atletico Madrid came from behind in Saudi Arabia to score a huge victory over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final.

Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa scored in the final 10 minutes of the game to knock the cup holders out of the tournament. The intensity of the clash, however, saw Lionel Messi and Atletico youngster Joao Felix enter into a heated face-off.

Joao Felix entered the contest on Thursday night (Friday IST) with a string of poor performances under his belt. The 20-year-old not only struggled once again but also got into several arguments during the game.

The Portuguese forward first got into a clash with Jordi Alba in the first half. Footage from the incident shows, the Spanish left-back poking Felix before slapping his hand away. While Felix did not react then, he let the frustration boil over in the dying minutes of the first half.

In a separate incident, the footage shows Joao Felix and Lionel Messi exchange some heated words. The duo clearly appeared agitated and had to be separated by their teammates. Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique and Alvaro Morata had to intervene to separate the duo.

The clash subsequently escalated when Suarez further engaged with Felix. Joao Felix and his teammate Stefan Savic were booked for the incident.

Coming back to the game, Barcelona produced another poor defensive display against Atletico Madrid. Despite falling behind early in the second half, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann scored in what appeared to be a hard-fought victory for the Catalan side. However, Diego Simeone’s side fought back to win the game and knock Barcelona out.

Borno spends N515m to take political thugs off streets

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara, on Thursday said N515m was spent on getting political thugs off the streets of Maiduguri metropolis.

The governor’s revelation came even as the United Nations Development Programme said it was buying into the state government’s “cash for sanitation initiative,” a programme which pays each political thug N30,000 monthly for six months after signing a bond not to be involved in political thuggery again.

Umara had in July 2019 launched a “cash for sanitation” programme through which 2,862 registered members of political thuggery groups were being paid N30,000 between July and December (six months) to abandon thuggery and clean the streets.

When the payment ended in December, the state government subsequently ordered the arrest and prosecution of anyone caught involved in political thuggery.

Speaking at the re-launch of the scheme on Thursday, Umara said the 2,862 youths were drawn from the 15 wards in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and six wards of Jere.

The governor said N515m was spent in making the monthly payments to the youth and that payments were made directly into individual’s accounts.

He said this was done in addition to getting the youth to acquire vocational skills so that they could become productive.

Meanwhile, the UNDP’s Representative in Borno, Yoshiaki Noguchi, while expressing the interest of the UN agency in the programme said the payment of N30,000 would be extended to the participants in the scheme for another three months.
