NANTAP To Adopt Digital Technology In Ekiti Elective Convention

As the count down to the 2021 National Delegates Convention of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) scheduled for Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State between September 16 to 18 begins, one very important aspect of the Convention that has been dubbed Ekiti NDC 2021 is the election of new Executives to pilot the affairs of the association for the next three years.

The Ekiti Convention is an elective congress, to address the challenges posed by Covid-19 and ensure an all-inclusive process, the umbrella body of all theatre and allied arts practitioners in Nigeria has chosen to go global.

NANTAP will join a growing list of organisations in Nigeria, who have embraced technology in the discharge of their various activities, especially the electoral process.

“This is a necessary step to take at a time like this. The world is changing every passing day and the creative sector has always been a pacesetter. We are happy with this partnership with Chams Nigeria PLC, as it avails us that opportunity to carry all of our members, within and all over the world along with our activities, especially the electoral process”, Mr. Israel Eboh, fta, the NANTAP President opined.

He added that, considering the new normal, and the fact that not all members would be able to make it to Ekiti, going digital with the electoral process is the way to go.

The President also said “I could not hide my excitement of this possibilities, at a time in our national life where we are still deliberating whether elections should happen manually or digitally. Chams PLC is an authority in this field, and we are today benefitting from their expertise as a partner for the 2021 National Delegates Convention.”

The election of National officers is scheduled to hold in the course of the convention on Saturday September 18.

The people of Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia LGA of Abia state have concluded their 2021 new yam (Iri Ji) and the traditional Igba Ekpe festival amidst cheers and excitement on 4th September 2021, ABN TV reports.

Far-reaching deliberations on how to move the community forward also took place.

2023: We’ll Need Tinubu’s Support To Produce Next President — Ohanaeze Ndigbo

Ahead of 2023 Presidential contest, pan Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, says the Southeast needs Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and former Lagos State governor if they are to stand a chance of making the Igbo Presidency a reality.

Dim Uche Okwukwu, Deputy President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, made this position known on Friday.

He noted that Tinubu controls the votes in Yoruba land; hence the Igbos need him to produce Nigeria’s President in 2023.

According to a Daily Post report, Okwukwu urged the people of the Southeast to show solidarity to the APC National Leader over his ill-health.

He pointed out that the former governor of Lagos State was the most benevolent Nigerian politician after Ahmadu Bello.

According to Okwukwu: “Most of my people don’t understand why it’s important to express solidarity with Asiwaju at this moment, the truth is that even if we are to produce an Igbo President we cannot do it without Yoruba votes and that vote is in the hands of one man and i know he has firm control of Yoruba land.

“I studied in Ife, and I understand Nigeria perfectly. In 1959, the progressives lost government in this country to the conservatives because Zik and Awolowo disagreed. In 1979, they lost again because Zik and Awolowo disagreed.

“The Northern progressives always lost on to the Southern progressives to come together; Asiwaju is one of the few remaining progressives from the UPN, AG, ACN and today to APC; he is one of the few remaining alive. People don’t understand his role, which is to lead the old to the new. This is why he has a lot of influence in Yoruba land.

“I have said this severally, that Tinubu is the only Nigerian that is politically benevolent, no Nigerian today can nominate his boy to become Speaker of the House of Representatives who is bigger than him. The highest Tinubu has ever attained was the governor of Lagos. The Vice President was his Attorney General in Lagos. This is what they call a large heart; the only person who exhibited these qualities in Nigeria was Ahmadu Bello, who allowed Tafawa Balewa to become Prime Minister while he was still in Kaduna.

“What is causing the problem of the South is political greed, and we are cultivating a crab culture. If you put crabs in a basket for three years, they will be there with no one escaping. We need to copy from Asiwaju a lot; what I can not do, another person should do it. On the vice president’s issue, Tinubu, who is a Muslim, asked Osinbajo to go because he is a Christian who is far younger than him. The only political position Osinbajo had before becoming the Vice President was the Attorney General of Lagos State; nobody has moved from that position to the Vice President in Nigeria’s history apart from Osinbajo and Asiwaju allowed it.

“If we follow the lessons of Asiwaju, we would not complain. The bane of Southern politics is that we don’t want another person to be stronger than us, and we are not getting it right. We need him to be alive; his death is not going to be a loss to Yorubas alone but to Nigeria.”

Christians Can’t Be Trusted With Nigeria’s Security, Says Sheikh Gumi

Last week’s trip to Igboho, Oyo State by Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gunmi was a vexatious misadventure, the Yoruba Leadership and Peace Initiative (TYLPI) has said.

Gumi, accompanied by the former Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf, was said to have arrived in the town, the adopted home of the incarcerated Yoruba self-determination activist, Mr. Sunday Igboho, and held meetings with some community leaders.

In a statement signed by its Director of Publicity, Mr. Tunde Ipinmisho, the Yoruba group said Gumi’s self-assigned role of mediator in the security crisis in the North western parts of Nigeria was suspect and had not yielded any tangible outcome.

The group said nothing was heard from Gumi, by way of open condemnation of the savage murder of scores of the people of Igangan, Oyo State by so called gunmen, for doing nothing other than to proclaim the ownership of their ancestral land.

It said it was the carnage that made the incarcerated Igboho rise in defence of the hapless people of the troubled community and other parts of Yorubaland.

“By his visit to Igboho town, Gunmi has exposed himself as a busybody who would exploit any situation to draw public attention to himself and his ignoble mission,” TYLPI said in the statement.

The group said any attempt by the likes of Gumi to hide behind the cloak of religion to divide the Yoruba or deny the well known acts of terrorism by Fulani herdsmen in parts of Yorubaland would fail.

It expressed surprise that the likes of Gumi who had been openly fraternising with terrorists and criminal gangs in the Northern parts of the country were walking freely around while innocent persons in other parts of the country were being hounded to jail for offences that were largely unknown to the nation’s laws.

“While the Yoruba are by nature welcoming and accommodating to visitors, those like Gumi coming with sinister agenda, should desist from making such forays into places where people have been traumatised.”

After 36 Years, Babandede Retires From Immigration Service

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede, has retired after spending 36 years in service.

A Deputy Comptroller General in charge of Finance and Account, Idris Isah Jere, will take over in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive Comptroller General by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Babandede, who was appointed the Comptroller General of the NIS on the 15th of May 2016, took over from Martin Kure Abeshi.

He introduced many reforms in the Service with the digitalisation of activities, decentralisation of passports issuance and introduction of the Visa of Arrival policy top on the list.

Speaking at a valedictory session organised in his honour on Friday, Babandede said; “I have left Immigration better than I found it.”

While acknowledging that he was able to achieve so much as a result of the help he received from his personnel, Babandede appealed to his successor not to “throw away the ideas we stand for”.

He added: “Keep the good things and drop the bad ones.”

The retired CG, who promised to be an ambassador of the NIS, said he will always be ready to assist whenever he is called on by the Service.

Babandede spent five years and four months as the Comptroller General of the Service.

Sheikh Gunmi Agent Of Hell Fire, Says Fani-Kayode

A former Minister of Aviation in Nigeria, Femi Fani-Kayode, FFK has insinuated that controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, is from hellfire.

Like Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Fani-Kayode labelled Gumi as a “lover of bandits”.

In a series of tweets on Friday, He criticized the cleric, asking a rhetorical question: “Which of the seven circles of hell did this creature come from?”

“Listen to Sheik Ahmad Gumi, the unrepentant and unapologetic “lover of bandits” and the Chief Spokesman for the foreign Fulani terrorists that come into our country from other shores and kidnap, torture, and slaughter our men, women, and children.

“He continues to demand that the terrorists must be paid huge ransoms and must be granted amnesty. My question: which of the seven circles of hell did this creature come from?” Fani-Kayode wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Friday.

Gumi is a prominent Muslim cleric acting as a self-appointed middleman and has emerged as a divisive figure in the kidnap-for-ransom crisis plaguing northern Nigeria, which has seen more than 800 students seized in recent months.

The former army captain was involved in May’s release of 27 students abducted in March from a forestry college in Nigeria’s Kaduna state.

Kebbi Govt Distributes Computers To Schools To Fight Drug Abuse

The Kebbi state government has distributed 50 desktop computers to secondary schools in the state, as a follow-up to the Unplugged Training Programme for secondary school teachers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Unplugged Training Programme is a school-based drug prevention programme initiated by the present administration in the state, with a view to curtailing the menace of drug abuse and other crimes amongst youths.

Speaking on behalf of members of the Kebbi State Taskforce Committee on Drug Control, Alhaji Muhammad Kabiru-Dabai, who supervised the distribution of the computers, commended the state government for its commitment to the fight against drug abuse and other illicit acts in the state.

He said the computers were procured to enable the teachers, who had undergone the Unplugged Programme, to remain up to date with current trends related to drug abuse control and crime prevention.

Kabiru-Dabai added that the gesture was also meant to make the lessons more interesting to students as a means of sustaining the programme.

Farmers Should Carry AK-47 Like Herdsmen, Says Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom has said that farmers should be allowed to bear AK-47 rifles like herdsmen, so that they can defend themselves.

Answering questions from newsmen at the Makurdi airport on his arrival for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) meeting in Abuja, Governor Ortom stated that a situation whereby herdsmen carried sophisticated weapons like the AK-47 rifle and farmers are asked to defend themselves with cutlass and Dane guns is unfair.

“Farmers should be allowed to carry weapons consummate to the weapons herdsmen are carrying about, killing people,” said Ortom,

He said he was happy that the House Representative is working towards a legislation whereby every Nigerian will have weapons to defend themselves.

“Let every one have weapons, so that we can face each other[; not when you have cutlass and Dane guns to face someone with AK-47.”

After 3 Days In Abductors’ Den, Police Rescue Obasanjo Farm Workers

The Nigerian Police, Ogun Command, says it has rescued three workers of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Farm, from their kidnappers’ den, three days after they were abducted.

The Police Spokesperson, DSP. Abimbola Oyeyemi, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta, on Friday evening.

NAN reports that the Obasanjo Farm’s workers were kidnapped on Wednesday evening at Seseri Village, while returning from work.

The farm is located at Kobape area in Obafemi-Owode Local Government area of the state.

Oyeyemi told NAN on Friday that the release followed “a serious pressure mounted on the kidnappers”.

He said that the anti-kidnapping operatives had been on the trail of the abductors.

According to him, the squad had continued combing bushes around the area since the incident happened.

“Yes, we mounted a lot of pressures on the kidnappers.

“Since yesterday (Thursday) our anti-kidnapping operatives have been in the bush searching for them.

“They were able to trace them to the bush behind the Day Waterman College, along the Kobape Road.

“This evening, they released them (victims) unhurt without any ransom,” he said.

On whether there was any arrest, Oyeyemi said “not yet, but we are very sure that we will make arrests soon”.

 

Jonathan Urges Nigerians To Make Sacrifice To End Insecurity

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has asked Nigerians to make sacrifices to tackle the numerous security challenges facing the country.

He made the call on Friday in Abuja during a public presentation of a research report on terrorism and banditry by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.

“We must therefore show commitment to peace in words, action and other necessary means,” Jonathan said. “To build a peaceful nation, we must first build in the lives of people because such inspires love, love promotes peace, peace engenders justice and justice guarantees freedom and trust.”

He also lamented that Nigerians have lost loved ones, properties and investments in the decade-long insurgency in the North-East.

‘Sacrifice From All’

The former president noted that “banditry, terrorism and other associated crimes threaten our human essence and the essential values of our democracy and nationhood.

“There is no doubt that our nation is plagued by many crisis and these challenges have continued to threaten our faith and shared destinies.

“This report that we are presenting today contains some observations and recommendations on the challenges of banditry and other human security concerns in our nation. As I conclude, let me state that the crisis facing us today requires sacrifice from all stakeholders.
