In Giving Girl Child Attention, Boy Child Should Not Be Neglected, Judith Amaechi Urges Parents

As Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating the international day of the girl child, Dame Judith Amaechi, wife of the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi has called on parents and caregivers to have shared attention between the girl child and boy child, ABN TV reports.

According to the former First Lady of Rivers State, every child deserves adequate attention irrespective of gender, adding that as someone being groomed to become a father and leader in future, the boy child should not be relegated to be background.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday when she played host to the management of IgbereTV who were in her home to formally inform her that she has been voted IgbereTV Woman of the year, she said if the boy child is starved attention, both in education and economic empowerment, the society becomes volatile for the generality of the populace.

“I advocate, not only for the girl but for the boy child also. I look forward to having a situation where the girl is not denied her rights or opportunities simply because she is a girl.

“I believe in both the girl child and boy child. If you only emphasize on the girl child, what happens to the boy? A good boy makes a good home as well. He is the father, the leader.

“For me, my emphasis is on the child, whether it is boy or girl. But for that of the girl, I will not support the idea of denying her access to every privilege the boy has no matter the child.

“I think progress is being made in giving her a place of prominence in the society. It is an ongoing process. It never ends. I can’t really say we have achieved all the best as a nation.

“There is a lot more to be done especially in terms of awareness but when you create an educational opportunity, you give that child access to becoming who he/she wants to become tomorrow and that is part of my personal project I am pursuing,” she said.

She expressed delight that what she described as some obnoxious laws of the past hindering the progress of the girl child are being dropped, expressing optimism that the future is bright for the Nigerian children.

Commenting on her emergence as IgbereTV 2021 Woman of the year, she expressed gratitude to those who voted for her to emerge the winner, saying she would continue to affect lives as part of her contribution to the development of Nigerian society.

Dame Judith Amaechi defeated Folorunsho Alakija, the Group Managing Director of The Rose of Sharon Group, Genevieve Nnaji, veteran Nollywood Actress, Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations to emerge victoriously.

She emerged winner with 918,896 votes just as the other nominees secured the following votes:

Genevieve Nnaji 507, 741 votes,
Folorunsho Alakija, 87,855 votes,
Amina Mohammed 70, 887.

The prestigious award, organised by IgbereTV, is endorsed by the African Union, African Film Institute. It recognises and honours the outstanding impact of leaders in both the public and private sectors in Nigeria.

The 2021 edition award presentation is scheduled to hold on November 2 at Sheraton Hotel and Towers Abuja.

Ebubeagu: A Missed Opportunity By South-East Governors To Tackle Insecurity — Expert

A security expert, Sir Chikwe Udensi has accused governors of the South East region of sleeping on duty over their alleged failure to fight insecurity in the geopolitical zone with the instrumentality of Ebubeagu security outfit they earlier set up.

He said the governors have failed to key into the liberality of federal government to allow a regional security outfit to make the region safe for the people.

Speaking with ABN TV on Tuesday in Abuja, he accused the South-East Governors of jeopardising the lives of the people even with the glaring inability of the federal agencies to protect the region.

While stating that the governors issue communiques they are not ready to implement at the end of every meeting, he dissuaded insinuation that Ebubeagu has been inactive due to lack of finance.

He said in Ekiti and other South-West states where Amotekun is functional, they earn less than the States in South East.

He attributed it to lack of readiness to secure the region, describing as ridiculous the decision of Abia State Government to send Ebubeagu operatives into the forest without arming them to confront killer herdsmen.

While calling for improvement of governance attitude with regards to security, Sir Udensi applauded them for achievements in other areas but insists that a lot need to be done in the area of security.

He called on them to put security at the front burner so that other areas of the economy could develop.

Details Of Electoral Act Amendment By Nigerian Senate Emerge

Members of the Senate on Tuesday made a series of adjustments to the Electoral Act during the plenary at the upper chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja.

This follows a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, for the re-Committal of some Clauses of the Electoral Act No. 6 2010 (Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill, 2021 (SB. 122) to the Committee of the Whole.

They are Clause 43, Clause 52, Clause 63, and Clause 87.

During a debate on the motion, some lawmakers disagreed with the provisions of some subsections in the affected clauses of the Act.

Thereafter, the Senate resolved into Committee of the Whole to consider the report Clause by Clause, after which the lawmakers reverted to plenary to report progress.

The lawmakers, in the Committee of the Whole and Plenary, considered and approved Clause 43 (as recommended), Clause 52 (as amended), Clause 63 (as recommended), and Clause 87 (as amended).

This led to the passage of the Electoral Act No. 6 2010 (Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill, 2021 (SB. 122) after it was read the third time on the floor of the Senate chamber.

When signed into law by the President, the amendments by the lawmakers will allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the mode of election results transmission, among others.

The amendments to the Act are highlighted below:

Clause 43: Ballot boxes and voting devices

Subsection 1:

Old: The Commission shall provide suitable boxes or any other voting device for the conduct of elections.

New: The Commission shall provide suitable boxes, electronic voting machine or any other voting device for the conduct of elections.

Subsection 3:

Old: The Polling Agents shall be entitled to be present at the distribution of the election materials and voting devices from the office to the polling booth.

New: The Polling Agents shall be entitled to be present at the distribution of the election materials, electronic voting machine and voting devices from the office to the polling booth.

Clause 52: Conduct of poll by open secret ballot

Subsection 2:

Old: Voting at an election under this Bill shall be in accordance with the procedure determined by the Commission, which may include electronic voting.

New: Subject to section 63 of this Bill, voting at an election and transmission of results under this Bill shall be in accordance with the procedure determined by the Commission.

Subsection 3 was deleted while Subsection 4 was renumbered as Subsection 3.

Clause 63: Counting of votes and forms

Subsection 5:

Old: The Presiding officer shall transmit the results including total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.

New: The Presiding officer shall transfer the results including total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.

Clause 87: Nomination of candidates by parties.

Subsection 1:

Old: A political party seeking to nominate candidates for elections under this Act shall hold direct or indirect primaries for aspirants to all elective positions, which may be monitored by the Commission.

New: “A political party seeking to nominate candidates for elections under this Bill shall hold direct primaries for aspirants to all elective positions, which shall be monitored by the Commission”.

Subsections 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 were deleted, new Subsections 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 were inserted, while Subsections 8 and 9 were renumbered. The newly inserted subsections are:

Subsection 3: The procedure for the nomination of candidates by political parties for the various elective positions by direct primaries shall ensure that all aspirants are given equal opportunity of being voted for by members of the party and given the opportunity to have agents for the purpose of monitoring the primaries.

Subsection 4: The procedure adopted for the direct primaries shall be spelt out in a guideline to be issued by the political party and filed with the Commission at least 14 days before the primary election.

Subsection 5: A political party shall maintain a register of its members and provide in the guideline for the conduct of the primaries that the register of its members shall be used for accreditation for the primaries.

Subsection 6: The Commission shall deploy personnel to monitor the primaries in all the centres where the direct primaries are held.

Subsection 7: Every aspirant cleared by the party to contest at the primary not later than fourteen days to the primary shall be entitled to a copy of the guideline for the conduct of the primaries in which he or she is participating.

Zamfara Communities Protest Insecurity, Seek Government Intervention

One of the two suspended lawmakers by the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Mohammed, representing Anka constituency has said that the Speaker, Nasiru Magarya, orchestrated his suspension to scupper a plan to impeach him for alleged incompetence.

Mr Muhammad said he was threatened by high-profile politicians in the state over the impeachment plan.

According to him, he initiated the move two months ago that the Speaker must be suspended over his incapacitation to lead the House according to the constitution.

The lawmaker told newsmen in Gusau, the State capital that the Speaker had since then not be happy with him for initiating his impeachment.

The lawmaker further explained that the Governor personally called and threatened him over the impeachment move, pointing out that all effort to let the Governor comprehend the inability of the Speaker to perform was unsuccessful.

He stated that after some days, the Governor ordered former finance minister, Bashir Yuguda to make peace between the group, for them to suspend their intentions and that because of the intervention of the former minister, Yuguda, the move was suspended.

“The entire members only urged the Governor to get things corrected in terms of how he runs his government in the overall interest of moving the State forward.

“Surprisingly, while in Kano attending UNICEF workshop, I started receiving calls from different quarters informing me of my suspension over alleged connection with armed bandits,” he said.

He challenged Hon. Yusuf Alhassan Kanoma who was the brain behind the motion to schedule time for them to swear with the holy Quran if at all he is sincere.

NLC Shuts Down Public Offices In Cross River State

Public offices including schools and hospitals have been shut down by the Organized Labour in Cross River State yesterday to press home its demands.

It comprised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC).

According to the group, the action followed failure of the state government to heed to its ultimatums issued over its demands.

A statement jointly signed by chairmen of the affiliate unions listed 14 issues in contention, which included non-payment of gratuities to retirees of state and local government workers for the past six years.

Others are the non-remittances of deductions from workers’ salaries and the full implementation of the minimum wage to the state and local government workers.

Also listed are non-implementation of promotion arrears to workers of state and local governments and reinstatement of pensioners wrongfully removed from payroll.

Following the action, the gates of the state secretariat were locked, while many other public offices were also put under lock and key.

Students of some secondary schools in several parts of Calabar metropolis were asked to return home by the labour leaders.

At the General Hospital, Calabar, the main entrance to the hospital was shut to the public.

Reacting to the situation, Mr. Effiong Umoh, special adviser to the governor on Labour Matters, said most of the demands by the unions had been met.

He also said that the unions had not exhausted all avenues for dialogue before embarking on an indefinite strike.

“The labour gave warning on Thursday and we called them for a meeting on Friday but they refused to come because they know they were to commence strike on Monday.

“We will continue to appeal to them to consider the financial situation of the government,” he said.

Former Chelsea and Uruguay star Gus Poyet has urged Edinson Cavani to try and leave Manchester United in January following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford has seen Cavani’s game time restricted to just 115 minutes of Premier League football in the current campaign.

Not only did the five-time Ballon d’Or winner take the Uruguay striker’s place in the squad, Ronaldo also took Cavani’s No. 7 shirt.

Despite an impressive return of 17 goals in 32 games for the Red Devils last season, Cavani looks set to play second-fiddle this campaign.

“Maybe he should move in January. From the outside, I don’t know him, but if I was him, seeing how things are now, and seeing him not getting to 90 minutes for the national team because he’s not playing – maybe.”

Cavani was benched for both of Uruguay’s recent World Cup qualifiers, against Colombia and Argentina.

Senate Adopts Direct Primaries For Political Parties In Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday ratified that political parties in the country should adopt direct primaries to all elective positions.

The Senate also said that the primaries should be supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The acceptance was sequel to motion for Re- Commital of some Clauses of the Electoral Act No.6 2010( Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2021( SB. 122), sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi.

ABN TV recalls that the Senate had earlier approved a provision in the Electoral Bill that allowed parties to use either direct or indirect mode of primaries in nominating candidates for elections during primaries.

The Senate has also agreed that INEC can now determine the mode of transmission of results during elections, including the electronic transmission or manual transmission.

Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says “it is unnatural to negotiate with a man in chains”.

Ejimakor, who is among the lawyers defending Kanu against the Nigerian federal government, advised the nation’s authorities to ‘stop resisting every effort being made to release his client from detention’.

“When a man is in detention and you wish to negotiate with him, the first step you take is stopping resisting every effort being made to release him from detention. That’s how they negotiated with Mandela, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King. It’s unnatural to negotiate with a man in chains,” Ejimakor wrote on his known Facebook and Twitter pages on Tuesday night.

ABN TV reports that Kanu has been in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody since his arrest and extradition to Nigeria. He is on trial for a treasonable felony.

His trial is slated for October 21 at the Federal High Court of Nigeria. Kanu’s controversial IPOB organization has been advocating for the secession of southeastern Nigeria.

Interpol Systems Consultant in Nigeria, Sir Chikwe Udensi has said he sees hope in the Nigerian electoral system following the adoption of electronic transmission of election results by the Senate on Tuesday, saying it would drastically curb electoral fraud.

Sir Udensi, a former governorship candidate in Abia said over the years, results are altered at the collation centres, maintaining that if results are transmitted electronically, it will reduce manipulation of figures associated with transmission.

Speaking with ABN TV on Tuesday in Abuja, Sir Udensi a stalwart of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA however noted that this step alone does not necessarily eliminate the possibility of mutilation of election results but will reduce the recklessness at which it is carried out.

“I know that electronic transmission of votes will curb sizeably electoral fraud. I commend the Senate.

“What they have done amounts to holding the bull by the horn. They know that politicians don’t want that. Don’t also forget that they are politicians too. Only a few of them are coming from other spheres of the society.

“Accepting that process to go through in line with the yearnings of many Nigerians is quite commendable. It may however not totally eliminate the possibility of manipulation but will reduce it”, he said.

ABN TV had earlier reported that the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday adopted electronic transmission of election results, a position that was contained in the Conference Committee report submitted to the chamber.

The electronic transmission of election results which is a proviso in clause 53 of the Electoral amendment act places on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the right to transmit results without subjecting their discretion to any other organ as was firstly captured that generated controversy.
