Abia Govt Rattled Over Sir Udensi’s Plan To Lift Burden Of Indebted Pensioners, Calls Him ‘Phone Seller’

Abia State government has taken a swipe over decision of Interpol Systems Consultant in Nigeria, Sir Chikwe Udensi’s decision to put smile of faces of indebted Abia pensioners by offering them some stipends to celebrate Christmas.

The Interpol chief has earlier requested to list of pensioners in the state to commence modalities to alleviate their plights even as Christmas approaches.

The pensioners are said to be indebted to backlog of 5 months and above.

Addressing a press conference in Umuahia recently, the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Eze Chikamnayo said Sir Udensi is not a security expert as he claimed, saying he may be a gate man or selling phones and its accessories.

Chikamnayo said the decision of Udensi to seek the list of pensioners is politically motivated, saying he did not follow due process.

He described the move as a crass political opportunism, noting that Sir Udensi is doing so ahead of 2023 election.

Sir Udensi who had earlier held a meeting with the leadership of Abia pensioners said he will not accord relevance to the state government’s claim with a response.

Even though he had obtained accurate list of pensioners in four out of the 17 local government areas, he expressed optimism that he will obtain full list of pensioners in the state even as the government denies him access to the list.

He said Prince Chikamnayo, the Commissioner for Information does not worth the response of his aides, saying 2023 will give them the answer.

Abia state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu says the federal government is yet to pay any money to the State over works it carried out on federal roads in the state.

The governor made this known on Wednesday at the Governor’s Lodge in Aba, on Wednesday, during a press briefing with select journalists.

According to the governor, despite this development, his administration would continue to do work on federal roads in the state to alleviate the sufferings of his people.

“Port Harcourt Road in Aba is a federal road, we are building it and others in the state, but the Federal Government is yet to refund us any money for the federal roads we are building in the state.

“Whether they refund us or not, we will continue to build these roads because they are used by our people and we won’t allow them to suffer.

“We have given the contractor N1bn to give us asphalted one lane on Port Harcourt Road from end to end and before long, another lane will be ready, making it two, out of the six lanes the road will carry”.

Ikpeazu said as at today, his administration has built and commissioned 41 roads in Aba, out of which 95 percent of them are still standing because they were built with cement rigid technology.

The Governor informed that at present, 20 roads were on going in different parts of the commercial city, stressing that although the government was struggling with two, among which is Faulks Road, promising that his government was going to tackle that this dry season.

“Nobody was paid N6bn as being speculated for Faulks Road, but we paid the contractor some money and work is still on going.

“It is only about 30 percent of the whole length of the road that is bad, the most important thing is that we have recovered Ukwu Mango portion of the road; the contractors are going back to site and before the end of January 2022, that road will be completed and commissioned”.

The governor hinted that his administration is presently tackling five critical roads in the city which included Ngwa, Obiohia, Ohanku, Port Harcourt and Omuma Roads which he said will be delivered before the end of the coming dry season.

On the road that leads to the NNPC Depot at Osisioma, Ikpeazu said his government’s efforts at rehabilitating the road was thwarted by a contractor who claimed he was given the contract by the federal ministry of works, but was yet to commence work on the road.

“For me, it appears there is deliberate attempt to seize us by the jugular and strangulate us to death in the case of the Osisoma Depot Road, but I hope it will be resolved amicably”.

Ikpeazu promised that the contentious Osisioma Flyover would be completed and commissioned within the coming dry season.

We’re Careful With Selection Of APC National Officers As Not To Lose In 2023

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, says the plan of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is to be victorious at the polls.

Governor Sule, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, said the party was treading with caution in conducting its congress and in the selection of principal officers that will pilot its affairs.

“Our plan is not to be able to lose this election in 2023 and that is everything we are doing,” the Nasarawa governor said.

“That is why we are being very careful in congresses, we are extremely careful in the selection of national officers, we are very careful in taking a decision.

“Rather than intimidation, the best thing that anybody who wants this power should do is to present themselves as credible, competent people who have the capacity to take over from Muhammadu Buhari and build on what he has already started.”

The governor also spoke about the rumoured presidential ambition of the APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu, and the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, among others.

While noting that the presidential hopefuls have developed leadership skills to succeed President Buhari in 2023, Governor Sule maintained that they must prove to Nigerians that they have all it takes to lead the country.

According to him, Buhari’s successor will be determined by Nigerians who will make the decision in the elections.

“Any one of them can come in and be able to display and prove to the people for support. At the end of the day, it is Nigerians that are able to do that (to choose),” he stated.

“Once you are able to convince Nigerians that this is the right thing, the people have the opportunity to compare to say this is the right person,” he added.

Although no specific date has been chosen yet, President Buhari recently approved February 2022 for the APC to conduct its national congress.

Obiano Under EFCC’s Watchful Eye As Tenure Ends — Report

There are indications Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed the incumbent governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano on watchlist.

This is contained in a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) dated November 15, 2021.

The EFCC requested the Service to place the outgoing governor on watchlist and inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the International airports and other points of entry and exit.

This is barely coming four months to the end of the governor’s tenure as governor.

ABN TV cannot yet establish the real reason the anti-graft agency placed Obiano on watchlist.

In September, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra had asked the anti-graft agency to probe the finances of the state in order to unearth “monumental deception”.

Basil Ejidike, Anambra APC chairman, in a statement, had alleged that Obiano has been “fraudulently” using the state’s security vote.

”Anambra as a state has not recorded significant growth and development since the inception of Governor Willy Obiano’s leadership. To maintain existing developmental structures in the state remains unattainable,” the statement read.

Elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, has demanded the immediate implementation of the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led All Progressives Congress (APC) report on true federalism.

The Delta native, who leads the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANFEF) in a chat with reporters in Abuja, argued that true federalism remains the solution to the multiple challenges besetting Nigeria.

The nonagenarian said it behoves President Muhammadu Buhari to act on the document that tallied with APC manifesto.

He argued that 98 per cent of report was already captured in the 600 recommendations of the 2014 National Constitution Conference.

Clark submitted posited that the call for restructuring was not anti-Buhari or anti-north, but a call for equity, fairness and justice geared at advancing Nigeria and the citizens.

Justifying his position, he argued: “The effect of insecurity is biting so hard in every facet of our lives. There is so much hunger in the land. People can no longer go to the farm because farmers are killed, raped and maimed. It reminds me of the message of the Emir of Katsina to Mr. President, through the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria.”

He went on: “The warning of Chief Ayo Adebanjo is very apt and should not be taken lightly. The country needs to be salvaged urgently, so, “let it be heard loud and clear that Nigeria must be restructured. Whether you are a northerner or a southerner, everyone stands to lose if Nigeria is not restructured.

“The President himself knows that, the leaders of the world know that. Nigerians know that, except unpatriotic Nigerians.”

The PANDEF chief added: “If Chief Ayo Adebanjo says that there will be no election if there is no restructuring, what he is saying, in essence, is that if restructuring is not done, the security situation in the country will worsen and would not permit peaceful elections to hold.

“And the agitation for self-determination and secessions will definitely increase, to the extent, that it will worsen the security situation of the nation. And you cannot conduct credible elections under a hostile atmosphere. It is a cautionary message to the nation and the government. It is a call to action.”

Most Fraud In Banks Perpetrated By Employees — EFCC

The EFCC declared in Abuja on Wednesday that most frauds in the banking sector were perpetrated by insider Information, Communication Technology (ICT) employees.

Mr Abbah Sambo, Head, Cybercrime Section of the EFCC, made the declaration at a national seminar on Banking and Allied Matters for judges.

Sambo represented the EFCC chairman, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, at the seminar.

He said that most banking sector fraud handled by the commission showed that bank employees aided the acts.

He also expressed regret at the increasing rate of cybercrime in spite of the best efforts by the commission to tackle it.

Sambo observed that in year past, young people involved in cybercrime were not ICT savvy, but today, it is ICT graduates that are the champions in perpetrating the crime.

He attributed the increase in cybercrime to moral decadence and peer group influence.

“The rate at which young men are perpetrating cybercrime is seriously alarming.

“When we arrest these criminals, one major reason they give for going into the crime is peer influence.

“Their friends are into it and they want to run with guys that drive the best cars and have the best girls in town.

“Most times when we arrest these criminals, we find them with a lot of assets that are registered in the names of their parents.

“Cars in the names of their mothers and houses in the names of their fathers. There is a fundamental issue relating to decay in moral coverage in the society,’’ he said.

Sambo said that the greatest challenge in fighting cybercrime was knowledge gap, noting that the criminals were getting more sophisticated.

He said the criminals had the ability to talk to one other seamlessly by sharing knowledge, unlike law enforcement agencies.

“A lot of the people trying to combat the crime in the field tend to lack the drive because they do not have the adequate training,’’ he said.

He stressed the need for adequate sensitisation and engagement with youths, especially from secondary school level to let them know the ills of crime.

The two-day seminar was organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute. (NAN)

The don said this is a feat the institution is proud of and is ready to support.

Speaking at the just concluded 8th annual Gombe Day Of Literature, now known as North East Festival of Literature, Culture and Creativity, the VC who was represented by Dr. Sani Ahmed Yauta expressed delight that members of the initiative are largely made up graduates or undergraduates of Gombe State University.

The VC says the university’s dream dream of encouraging human capital development aligns with that of HalimaFactor Community Initiative, assuring that the institution will continue to support this drive.

“We encourage this initiative because we know that our graduates in Gombe State University are going to benefit from its series of activities. It tries to as much as it can encourage human capital development and the same thing is what we do at the university.

“It is a welcomed development that this organisation chooses Gombe State University to be part of its activities.

“The foundation encourages youths to actively participate in developing themselves, and at the same time ensuring that youths are advised to use their own talent to be self-reliant at the fullness of time” Prof. El-Nafaty remarked.

Also speaking, Mai Kaltungo, Engr. Saleh Mohammad OON, applauded the founder HalimaFactor Community Initiative, Halima Usman for her doggedness in raising the tempo of youth empowerment through literature.

The Royal Father noted that with the exposure the initiative offers young people, they are not only being prepared for self-dependence but groomed as useful citizens of the country.

He thanked Gombe state governor, Alh. Inuwa Yahaya, his Deputy Dr. Manassah Jatau as well as the security agencies for ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for the event.

The CEO, HalimaFactor Community Initiative,Khadijah Kwargana said the event which in 2014 started off as an opportunity for only Gombe students to showcase their talents is now a 3-day event covering the six North Eastern states of the federation.

She further expressed optimism that the event will expand beyond the shores of Nigeria in no distant future, adding that the North East Festival of Literature, Culture and Creativity seeks to help participants identify their talents and ways to develop and nurture them.

The founder of HalimaFactor Community Initiative, Halima Usman in her comment noted that the event is not centered around her as a person, emphasising that she has set up a mechanism to ensure that even in her absence, the programme will continue.

While commending the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aliyu Usman El-Nafaty for among other things making available facilities of the university for hosting of the event, Usman, who is also the chairman of Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, Abuja chapter announced that the 2022 edition of North East Festival of Literature, Culture and Creativity will be a one-week event.

“You can decide to sponsor one thing or the other. The whole essence is to keep the dreams of these children alive, to raise the next set of professors, just like we have them sitted here today.

“We want to raise them, we don’t want to lose them. So I encourage everyone of us to look at the possibility of partnering with us, sponsoring one thing or the other towards the success of this event” she appealed.

Interpol Systems Consultant in Nigeria, Sir Chikwe Udensi has commended Igbo leaders under the aegis of Highly Respected Igbo Grades for making a demand for unconditional release of the detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB Nnamdi Kanu on the President, saying nothing warrants his incarceration.

While nothing that Nnamdi Kanu is passing the right message of Igbo marginalisation in a wrong way, Sir Udensi said his release should commence the process of national healing, insisting that the Igbo have been unfairly treated.

Speaking on a radio programme, Open Parliament on Family Love FM Umuahia and ABN TV  on Wednesday, Sir Udensi noted that even though there are clear signs of marginalisation against the Igbo, the use of violence and demand for separation is not the solution.

“Everybody knows the way the Igbos are being treated remains unfortunate. So apparently, one can say Nnamdi Kanu is a prisoner of conscience.

“What we should be looking at is, let us leave what has happened. Let us heal the nation. Release the young man from prison, let us look at how we can effectively put the country back.

“You cannot be talking of reconciliation when you have the young man there in the prison. That is what the Igbo leaders went there and saw the President for.

“Release him, let’s take him to the house and caution him and then we look for better ways to ensure that the country moves forward.

“Today, the country is largely divided, we should look for a way to unite the country” he advised.

Sir Udensi said, though President Muhammadu is not the Head of the Judiciary, he can apply political solution in healing the wound of the nation.

He expressed dissatisfaction that Igbo have been shortchanged in national affairs, calling for a commencement to heal the country for everyone’s interest.

A socio-political group, Abia North Peace Foundation, ANPF, has taken a swipe at former Abia North Senator, Mao Ohuabunwa for making moves to return to the Senate in 2023.

ANPF while responding to another group, Abia North Restoration Movement which it accused of being the arrowhead in bring Sen. Ohuabunwa back to the Senate said Ohuabunwa has been retired from active politics, urging him to bury his dream of returning to represent Abia North, adding that era of frying pan politics is gone.

Abia North Restoration Movement had in a statement signed by one Chief Dan Ikwuagwu and Maduka Okorie alleged that the voice of Abia North Senatorial District was missing in the 9th Senate.

The group while drumming support for the return of Senator Mao Ohuabunwa in 2023,  accused the incumbent Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of not being vocal enough on issues affecting people of the zone.

Responding to the statement, ANPF in a statement signed by its Deputy National Coordinator, Hon. Gabriel Idika Ukairo said Abia North won’t go back to Egypt when the people only benefited the sharing of frying pan by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as his constituency project.

According to Ukairo, Senator Kalu has done exceptionally well for the zone by attracting and constructing not less than 30 roads in the zone.

He said, ” Kalu has brought unimaginable development for Abia North.  He has performed beyond what a Senator could do.  From road constructions,  Kalu has renovated and constructed schools and hospitals.  He has empowered several people and offered hundreds jobs . I am sure Senator Kalu won’t descend into the gutter with these career politicians whose trade is only to blackmail others for a peanut. These career politicians should be reminded that we’ve long left Egypt where frying pan was the only constituency project attracted after twelve years.

“Senator Mao Ohuabunwa is a specialist in failure and majority of our people won’t return to Egypt with him. It is on record that even his people in Arochukwu rejected him in 2019. How can they now return to him in 2023?

“Ikwuagwu and his group  should tell us why Ohuabunwa’s nomination as PDP National Secretary was rejected by PDP stakeholders from the State. Ohuabunwa’s failure was affirmed by all from Umuneochi down to Arochukwu. 

“I am sure this group cannot even come opening to mention Ohuabunwa to Ndi Abia North. Senator Kalu has redefined representation never seen in the history of Abia North. Therefore, it is pertinent to say that we won’t return to the era of sharing frying pan.”
