Justice Daniel Osaigor of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, adjourned till January 24, 2022 further hearing in the alleged N4.6bn fraud involving a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode and others, ABN TV reports.

Fani-Kayode is standing trial alongside a former Minister of State for Finance, Nenadi Usman, a former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Yusuf Danjuma, and a company, Join-Trust Dimensions Nigeria Ltd. on a 17-count charge bordering money laundering to the tune of N4.6billion.

The defendants had pleaded “not guilty” to all the charges preferred against them.

Though counsel to the first defendant, Chief Ferdinard Orbih, was absent at today’s sitting, following a letter notifying the Court in advance, other defence counsel, including Norrison Quakers, SAN and Clement Onwuenwunor, were present.

The prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, raised no objection to the letter sent in by the defence.

He, however, told the Court that the prosecution’s investigation of the several letters that Fani-Kayode claimed to have obtained from Kubwa General Hospital and presented to court at previous sittings as an excuse for his absence showed that they were all fake.

He further added that the EFCC was “currently working on the report and will do the needful.”

The matter was, thereafter, adjourned till January 24, 2022 for the continuation of trial.

At the last sitting on October 13, 2021, F.B. Ajudua had told the court that his client, Fani-Kayode, was “currently on bed rest at Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja”.

It’s Greed To Be Stingy With Vaccines – South African President Ramaphosa

0

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has said it is greedy of nations who have more than enough to be stingy with vaccines.

Ramaphosa said this at the ongoing peace and security conference in Dakar Senegal.

Although he didn’t specify any particular country, he said it’s disappointing that some countries are still being stingy and unwilling to give out their vaccines to other countries who don’t have much.

“These countries have more vaccines than their population and hold the vaccines, and when his country wanted vaccines, they refused and gave them the crumbs from their table.

“Now they have said Omicron started from South Africa so our people can’t travel around the world, but today the same omicron is all over their country.”

CP Babaji warned that anyone who violates the order would be arrested and brought to book.

The CP further explained that the use of knockouts and others, aside from constituting nuisance and disturbance of public peace, is also capable of causing unnecessary fear and apprehension and other dangers associated with its usage in the harmattan period.

“This is in addition to the possibility of providing an escape space for criminals after the commission of a crime.

“To this end, the CP has ordered all Divisional Police Officers and Heads of Police Units within the FCT to carry out due enforcement of the ban and ensure that anyone who violates the order is arrested and brought to book.

“The CP equally called on parents and guardians to impress on their children and wards to desist from the sales and use of fireworks, firecrackers, knockouts, others as the ban is in the best interest of all.

“He warned persons trading in these banned items to seek alternative but legal ventures noting that in the FCT, it will not be business as usual.

We Have Enough COVID Vaccines To Cover 70% Of Nigerians, Says Boss Mustapha

Secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha has stated that Nigeria has enough vaccines that can cover over 70 percent of the country’s population before the end of 2022.

This was stated by Boss Mustapha at the national COVID-19 summit which was held at Muhammadu Buhari Conference Centre in Abuja.

The summit was tagged ‘Pushing Through the Last Mile to End the Pandemic and Build Back Better’.

He said the vaccines are safe, hence, “it is better and safer to be vaccinated against the virus”.

Mustapha said the summit was to create the opportunity to identify successes, gaps and lessons learnt so far in Nigeria’s national response to the pandemic since March 2020 to date.

He added that the summit is also aimed at developing strategies to actualize the international commitments towards ending COVID-19 before the end of 2022.

“Today, we are here to assess the level of impact of our national response and develop strategies as we push through the last mile to end the pandemic while we build back better,” he said.

“There is no gainsaying that the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, which was triggered when the index case was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, precipitated significant disruptions to the healthcare system and socio-economic lives of Nigerians.

”Due to the evolving dynamics of COVID-19 pandemic with progressive mutations of the virus to more transmissible and deadly variants, the international community has corroborated the insinuation that the pandemic will persist for few more years.

“This understanding has impelled world leaders recently to come to a conclusion that if efforts are not renewed and aggressive measures are not taken, COVID-19 pandemic will continue to ravage humanity well longer than earlier envisaged. Hence the need to adopt an ambitious (but cautious) agenda to end the COVID-19 pandemic by the year 2022.

“Nigeria has invested in enough vaccines that can cover over 70% of our population before the end of 2022. These vaccines are safe and efficacious, hence it is better and safer to be vaccinated against this virus, now.”

He said the summit is a follow-up towards Nigeria’s commitment to the ambitious global agenda/movement to end the COVID-19 pandemic by 2022 and build back better.

“Global efforts at ending COVID-19 pandemic are intrinsically linked to the call for nations of the world to take steps towards strengthening their health system and bio-security- which will make for better pandemic preparedness and the ability to respond more robustly and swiftly to future pandemics,” Mustapha said.

He asked stakeholders to encourage all eligible persons to get vaccinated and keep observing the necessary preventive COVID-19 measures.

Nigerian Govt Asks UK To Rescind Travel Ban Over OMICRON Variant

0

The Federal Government has asked the United Kingdom to review its decision to impose travel ban on Nigerians because of Omicron variant of COVID-19, ABN TV reports.

It said the UK’s decision was “unfair, unjust, punitive and discriminatory because it does not follow science.”

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed made the position of the government known at a briefing in Abuja.

He said: “As you are aware, Britain has put Nigeria on its red list and banned foreign travels from our country.

”This is as a result of the discovery of Covid-19 cases, Omicron variant, in Nigeria. Britain now joins other countries, including Canada, which have taken a similar action against Nigeria over Omicron.

” Let me say straight away that it’s up to the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) to respond to this action by the British government and others, and I have no doubt that the Committee will respond appropriately.

” However, as the Spokesman for the Federal Government, I can say, without mincing words, that the decision by tye British government to put Nigeria on the red list, just because of less than two dozen cases of Omicron which, by the way, did not originate in Nigeria, is unjust, unfair, punitive, indefensible and discriminatory. The decision is also not driven by science.

“We sincerely hope the British government will immediately review the decision to put Nigeria on its red list and rescind it immediately. Nigeria has handled the Covid-19 pandemic with utmost responsibility and based on science, and has rightly earned global accolades for its efforts.

“Nigeria does not belong on any country’s red list.”

President of African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina, on Monday said that the travel ban placed on some African countries over Omicron, the new COVID-19 variant, is “very unfair, non-scientific and discriminatory”.

Recall that due to the newly detected coronavirus variant in South Africa, many developed countries have been shutting their doors against African countries.

Writing on his verified twitter handle, Adesina urged the western countries to lift the travel ban on the African countries.

He queried why the travel ban was not placed on non-African countries where Omicron had also been found.

“Why single out African countries? Singling out African countries is very unfair, nonscientific and discriminatory.

“Global vaccines and travel apartheid against Africa are endangering lives, hurting economies, lives, jobs and livelihoods from a pandemic Africa did not cause.

“End the apartheid. Respect Africa,” Adesina said.

He added that the move became imperative due to intelligence reports at the disposal of the corps.

“Beginning from today, we will have men of the Amotekun Corps stationed all over the state in some strategic positions.

“There will be massive searching and checking of vehicles and this is due to intelligent reports. I enjoin the general public to cooperate with us.” he said.

Messi ‘Ordered To Demolish’ His Luxury Hotel In Barcelona

Paris Saint-Germain forward, Lionel Messi, has been ordered by a court to demolish his four-star hotel in Barcelona.

El Confidential reports that Messi’s 77-bedroom building does not meet city standards.

The ‘MiM Sitges’ is located close to where the 34-year-old used to live while he played for the LaLiga side.

Messi also owns hotels in Ibiza and Majorca through the Majestic Hotel Group and spent £26m on the Barcelona-based residence in 2017.

But it is understood Messi bought the hotel without being aware that the Sitges Town Hall had already ordered for it to be demolished as a result of non-compliance with building codes.

The hotel’s balconies are believed to be too large, but the structure could even collapse if they are downsized or torn down.

Apart from that, the fire emergency plan also reportedly failed to meet the authorities’ standards.

Messi became aware of the demolition order when the Spanish newspaper approached him for reaction, which he and his representatives passed on.

The hotel has been praised for its approach to sustainability, with 80% of the material used for the building’s construction either reused or recyclable.

On top of that, it has large tanks that collect waste water from every shower, which is then filtered to be used in the toilets and for watering plants.
