My Crime For Being Kidnapped By Police, Tortured And Extorted 550k Is Because I’m Igbo, Says Abuja Based Relationship Coach

0

Following the allegation by motivational speaker and relationship coach, Mr Solomon Buchi, that Policemen of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command abducted him and his younger brother at Wuse on Tuesday night and forcefully extorted the sum of #550,000 from him and his brother using his ATM, the Commissioner of Police, CP Sunday Babaji has ordered an investigation.

Police personnel deployed for patrol duties within the Wuse metropolis, are being subjected to discreet investigation to fish out the perpetrators of the criminal act.

FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh confirm to Vanguard that the Police Command has swung into action in the investigation adding that the Command CP has zero-tolerance for any sort of misconduct that will tarnish its image.

Recall that in a Twitter post on Tuesday night, Mr Solomon Buchi said he and his younger brother were assaulted and treated like criminals by the policemen of the FCT Police Command who extorted N500,000 from him.

He said the policemen treated them treated like criminals adding that they labelled him and his younger brother as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

His words, “I and my kid brother were kidnapped by the police in Abuja around Wuse 2 couple hours ago, after eating. They swiftly double-crossed our bolt ride, brought out guns and asked us to follow them into their car which wasn’t a police vehicle.

“On getting in, they asked where we’re from, I stated that we’re Igbos from Imo State, they immediately said that we’re members of IPOB, they squeezed us into their car; they were five policemen.

“Long story short, they took our ATMs and withdrew N500,000 out of N617,000 that I had in my account. They withdrew my kid brother’s N50,000. I begged them that it was my upkeep money for my stay but they went physical on me, slapped me and asked me to use the N117,000 for myself.

“By the way, they stopped at a junction, and one took off his police uniform and went to withdraw the money using a POS! They also wanted to transfer our crypto. Man, I can’t even talk. I’m traumatised. After everything, they drove us back to town (Utako where I stay…)

“They looked for a dark place, unlocked the handcuffs and gave us our phones and cards. They took my new AirPods and valuables. Phew. This wasn’t the plan at all. I felt so invaded and highly abused.”

The Twitter handles further reads, “My first crime for being kidnapped by the Nigerian police was being Igbo. Immediately they asked me if I am Igbo, they said we want to divide the country and now that Nnamdi Kanu has escaped, that we are hanging around to break the country. https://t.co/sdSmHKco12

COVID-19: We Can’t Accept Expired Vaccines Again, NAFDAC Cautions

0

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has said the agency is working with international partners to ensure Nigeria gets vaccines with long expiration dates.

Adeyeye spoke against the backdrop of the one million doses of vaccines that expired in November and were destroyed by NAFDAC and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and the Abuja Environmental Protection Agency.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 1,066,214 doses of expired AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines were destroyed at the Gosa Dumping site in Abuja.

Adeyeye told NAN, on Wednesday in Lagos, that the expired vaccines had very short expiration dates which made it impossible to be administered in time due to logistics reasons.

She said, “When developed countries started using the vaccine for many months, we didn’t have access to them until we started receiving donations, not just through COVAX alone but from some countries also.

“The expiration date was shorter than what it was supposed to be and between the time we tested and start using it, there was not enough time and that was the only reason not because we were careless.

“But going forward, we are working with international partners to ensure the expiration date of any vaccine we will be receiving are up to five or six months.”

On the new Omnicron variant of COVID-19, the DG said that studies on the variant were still ongoing globally.

She advised Nigerians to continue to adhere to the safety measures given by the various health authorities to further curb the spread of the virus.

“A lot is still not known about Omicron because studies are still going on globally about the variant.

“The only way to keep safe is to continue with the usage of mask, maintain social distancing, wash our hands regularly and avoid crowded areas to stay safe,” she said.

Enugu Community Weeps As Suspected Herdsmen Kidnap 7 Indigenes Who Returned For Christmas Holidays

0

There is uneasy calm in Eha-Amufu, in the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State after suspected herdsmen allegedly kidnapped in one week seven residents who returned for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

PUNCH Metro gathered that about five persons were abducted on Monday along the Eha-Amufu-Agu-Amede-Ikem road.

A community leader, Mr Divine Nwonye, who hails from Agu-Amede community in Eha-Amufu, told our correspondent that his younger brother, who came home to celebrate Christmas, was among those kidnapped.

He said there was no week without a report of people being kidnapped by bandits suspected to be herdsmen along the Eha-Amufu-Ikem road.

“There is no road or security in Isi-Uzo LGA and it is made worse because of bad road. I am begging the governor to look into our plight and save us from the incessant kidnapping along the Eha-Amufu-Agu-Amede-Ikem federal road. Within this year alone, we have recorded no fewer than 10 abductions with 23 people involved.

“Our people have paid several millions of naira in ransom to herdsmen, while about three people were killed along the road by the same bandits,” he added.

Nwonye stated that in the last one week, they recorded seven kidnap cases on the road.

“The same bandits after releasing a Catholic priest in one of the parishes in Eha-Amufu, yesterday (Monday) kidnapped about five people just after the Federal College of Education.

“As it is now, the abductors have not contacted us. The last time they kidnapped the eight-year-old daughter of the chairman of Agu-Amede community, the Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Lawal, told us to go and pay ransom to the kidnappers. That has worsened our situation as police hardly come when contacted for any case of kidnapping,” he stated.

While lamenting the incessant kidnapping along the Eha-Amufu-Ikem road, Nwonye said he had abandoned his rice farm for fear of being abducted.

Another community leader, Raymond Ugwu, said it was unfortunate that the state government could not stop the abductions by fixing the road, which was less than five kilometres.

He said, “The kidnapping along the Eha-Amufu-Ikem road is largely because of bad road. Every time, our people are running on that road and we don’t have any option than that. On Monday, they kidnapped our people, but I don’t know exactly the number; but they are more than two.

“The report I got was that the kidnappers started their operation from 5pm and that was the time our people were returning to their villages and communities. Kidnappers are making the road miserable for us. Our people are no longer going to the market. They are no longer moving around safely; everybody is running helter-skelter.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the state police command were unsuccessful as the police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, could not be reached on his telephone line.

He also did not respond to a text message sent to him on the abductions.

Killings: Masari Vows To Assist Katsina Citizens Acquire Arms

0

The Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, has called on citizens residing in the state to acquire arms with a view to protecting themselves from incessant attacks by bandits now bedevilling the Northwest region of Nigeria.

A BBC Hausa report said that while discussing with journalists in Katsina,Masari said the number of police operatives in Katsina State was less than 3000, and expressed that government would assist citizens who would want to acquire arms so as to contribute in restoring the security situation

According to him, “security is everybody’s affair, irrespective of political difference. What the public should know is that in Katsina; you don’t have 3000 police. Therefore,we are calling on whoever wants to protect himself and his family to acquire arms.”

He said; “the religion of Islam has allowed a person to protect himself and his property and family.

“If you die in the course of protecting yourself, you die a martyr. The annoying fact is that bandits have access to guns and good people don’t have access to these guns with which they can use to protect themselves and their families”.

The Governor said government Will assist any person who would like to acquire arms in order to stop banditry.

“We will assist those who want to bring in arms because there is need for the people of Katsina to support the security agents,” he said.

The Governor, however, criticised the activities of vigilantes, saying “we do not trust the activities of vigilantes because they are leaving their places of origin to other towns.

“We prefer people defending their places origin themselves,” he said.

Igbo As Minority Can’t Afford Politics Of Opposition, Must Connect To Centre To Achieve Presidency — Ebonyi Commissioner

0

The Commissioner for Abakaliki Capital City Development Authority, Ebonyi State, Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Wednesday stated that Ndigbo must connect to the politics at the Centre to be able to realize their aspiration of producing the next Nigerian President of Igbo extraction.

Nwebonyi who is former State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ebonyi State added that “as Igbo, we should see a reason to connect to the party at the centre because as a minority in Nigeria we cannot afford to play opposition politics.”

The Commissioner stated this at Mbeke in Ishieke community of Ebonyi Local Government Area of the State while dolling out empowerment items to indigent youths, widows and other less privileged members of the community.

The Ebonyi Commissioner who further added that Governor David Umahi was suitably qualified to run for the position of the President added that the Governor would bring about infrastructural development of the country if given the opportunity.

Nwebonyi who is also a Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC awarded university scholarships to 50 students from Mbeke, Ishieke Community, gave out motorcycles to indigent youths and a Toyota Corolla to the Chairman of APC in Ebonyi LGA of the State.

While presenting cheques and empowerment items to the beneficiaries, Nwebonyi urged them to make judicious use of the items given to them to enhance their economic status.

He advised the beneficiaries of the scholarship grants to shun illicit activities that could derail their academic programmes and admonished them to study hard to make good academic grades.

“I want to advise beneficiaries to make judicious use of every opportunity that I have provided for them. The students that I have given scholarships should study hard to bring hope to their families while those that I have given motorcycles should make good use of them.

“I can recall that somebody that I gave one motorcycle last year now has two showing that the empowerment is yielding good result,” Nwebonyi said.

Nwebonyi further noted that he was spurred to embark on the empowerment programme in order to reduce the poverty level and the rate of criminality in the community.

“Before now, there is a high level of criminality in this area occasioned by poverty. But, I discovered that there is a gap between the leaders and the led particularly the youths who are idle.

“So, as a leader, I felt that we should make provisions for other people’s children; we just can’t be providing for our own children because our children are not safe if the other children are not properly engaged.

“That is the essence of what I do annually. Since 2016 I became the state chairman of a party and now as Commissioner, with what I have given today; I have given a total of 484 motorcycles, I have built houses for 37 families and a Toyota Corolla car.

“I have produced more than 20 graduates under our scholarship scheme with 30 students still pursuing various academic degree programmes in different Nigerian universities. This is a way of appreciating God and also in keeping with the philosophy of our master, Gov Umahi,” he added.

Mr Anselem Iziuogo and Miss Nkiruka Ogbaga on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the benefactor for the gesture saying that the scholarship grant has assisted students from the area in their academic programme.

Some of the beneficiaries received N100,000 while others got N50,000 as scholarships grants.
