ASUP Condemns Deplorable Decay Of Federal Poly Offa

As the warning strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities enters second month, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Thursday threatened to shut down all Polytechnics across the country if the Federal Government fails to meet up with its demands within the next one month.

The ASUP President Comrade Anderson Ezeibe made the threat while addressing Journalists at the end of the Union’s 102 National Executive Council meeting in Yola the Adamawa State capital where members of the Union displayed placards with various inscriptions to drive home their demands.

“Following exhaustive deliberations on the issues raised above, the 102nd of the unions National Executive Council has resolved to give the Federal Government a further one month as an ultimatum to address the outstanding issues.

“Our union’s National Executive Council shall be reconvening after the one month period which takes effect from 4th April 2022, for further decisions on this subject,” the ASUP President said.

According to him, ASUP had suspended its 61-day long industrial action on June 10, 2021, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the government.

But due to the failure of the government to meet their demands, the union said it is set to resume the suspended industrial strike action but will reconvene in a month’s time to make that decision.

Items under the union’s demands include; the non-release of the revitalisation funds for the sector, non-release of arrears of the new minimum wage, and non-release of the reviewed nomination instruments for institutions and Managements as well as programmes accreditation among others.

The National President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Quadri Olaleye, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign if he can no longer provide adequate security for the citizens of the country.

Comrade Olaleye said this Friday during the burial ceremony of the late TUC General Secretary, Comrade Musa Lawal Ozigi, at his country home in Ogaminana, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Comrade Olaleye lamented that bandits have taken over towns and cities, including roads and forests in the nation, adding that nobody is safe in the country.

“Children can no longer go to school; you cannot travel again and we cannot close our two eyes when sleeping. If the president cannot provide security for the citizens of this country, then he should resign,” he said.

He added that if the government had listened to the outcry of the people about the worsening security situation in the country, the current situation wouldn’t have occurred.

He lamented that the attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train led to the death of the General Secretary of TUC and its Kwara State chapter chairman, Comrade (Barr) Musa-Lawal Ozigi and Comrade Akin Akinsola, respectively.

ABN TV reports that this is coming less than 12 hours after the hoodlums burnt some buildings in Nnewi South Local Government Headquarters, Ukpor, which attracted a visit by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. There, the Governor had expressed his dismay at the level of destruction going on in his state, vowing to put a stop to it.

Indigenes of Amichi, Ezinifite and Osumenyi alleged that unknown gunmen burning of the three Police stations could be attributed to the promise by state government to equip the Police in the area, after authorities’ visit to Ukpor to assess the level of damage.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra State, Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the attack, saying that the affected Police Stations were all initially attacked and destroyed during the #EndSARS protests of October 2020.

The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has threatened to bring in foreign mercenaries to fight terrorists hibernating in forests areas around Kaduna State if the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari fails to tackle the terrorism head-on.

El-Rufai, who spoke with journalists shortly after briefing the president on the recent killings in Kaduna State including Monday’s bomb explosion on the Abuja-Kaduna rail line which claimed nine lives with a yet-to-be known number of people abducted, said state governors will have no choice but to take action to protect the lives and properties of their people.

Speaking in Hausa, El-Rufai said: “I have complained to Mr president and I swear to God, if action is not taken, we as governors will take actions to protect the lives of our people.

“If it means deploying foreign mercenaries to come and do the work, we will do it to address these challenges.”

ABN TV reports that the Nigerian government under former President Goodluck Jonathan was in 2015 accused of hiring mercenaries from South Africa to fight Boko Haram even though the then federal government had denied the claim.  

However, El-Rufai who said the president has assured him that action will be taken to bring an end to terrorism in the next few months, explained that the best way to tackle terrorism once and for all was for the Nigerian Armed Forces to bomb forest enclaves where terrorists are hibernating.

Speaking on Monday’s attack on the rail line, he said: “They came ready and they have been preparing for a long time and knew which coach to attack, abduct the VIP.

“And I have been saying that the forests where these bandits are hiding, it is high time that we go there and bomb them all. Everyone in the forest should be killed.

“Unless this is done, this problem will persist and it is capable of destroying Nigeria as a whole.”

“These people (terrorists) are getting money. The way they are so emboldened; they fear no authority, no soldier and so why won’t security agents go to their enclaves and kill them all?

“We know where they are, SSS gives reports on them every day, they have their numbers including that of Dogo Gide and what he is planning,” he said.

The governor also made it clear that his administration will not pay ransom to secure the freedom of the abducted passengers even though he said the terrorists are yet to make specific demands.

He said, “They have contacted some of the families but they have not made specific demands yet.

“They are not the ordinary kidnappers, it’s Boko Haram members that connived with bandits to launch the attack and so our thought is, they may demand the government to pay the ransom.”

He assured that security personnel were working tirelessly to locate the terrorists and rescue the passengers, adding that government will always give priority in protecting the lives of citizens over everything.

Many Nigerians anxious to study abroad see Ukraine as a good option.

But in an interview with Daily Trust (not ABN TV), the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, said Russia is the language of expression in Ukraine, but the country hurriedly set up a parallel programme because of the quest for medical education by students from English-speaking developing countries.

“They (Ukraine) don’t train them using patients. They train them using mannequins only. They don’t even see or touch patients and they are coming here to talk rubbish,” he said.

On the controversy between MDCN and foreign-trained doctors over qualifying exams to practise in Nigeria, he said the council has a curriculum and syllabus, and is contained in the Red Book, contrary to what the foreign-trained medical graduates said.

He said; “So what else do they want us to do? We did not make it compulsory for anybody. We said go and train wherever you want to train and present yourself for the exams.”

On the issue of going for service, he said they are not competent enough to handle patients.

“Someone who has not been certified to be able to treat patients will be mobilised for youth service as what?” he asked.

“They cannot intimidate anybody. We have a responsibility in the council to safeguard the health of Nigerians and other people living in this country without fear or favour. We don’t train them, and these people are not even allowed to practise in those countries where they are trained.

“What we are doing for them is called damage control. Some of them are not even qualified to sit for our examination. They are our children. If they don’t accept them over there, can we throw them away? That is why we put up a programme for them but they complained and we removed it, yet they are complaining.

“We would not allow people that are not competent to have access to our patients and start killing people.”

APC Leadership: Adamu Receives Certificate Of Return As National Chairman

Sen. Abudullahi Adamu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) newly-elected national chairman says there is no room for failure in the party under his chairmanship.

Adamu made the declaration on Friday in Abuja after receiving his Certificate of Return from Jigawa’s Gov. Muhammad Abubakar, Chairman, Election and Planning Sub-Committee of the party’s March, 26 national convention.

“We have zero tolerance for failure in this new dispensation of our great party because we have an enormous responsibility ahead.

“On the 2023 general elections, we cannot move the way we are to election.

“We have a marching order by the leader of this party, President Muhammadu Buhari, we will have to deliver.

“There will be no excuses whatsoever, and we need every hand on deck for this to happen,’’ Adamu who emerged as APC national chairman through consensus said.

He commended Gov. Abubakar’s committee for conducting the election in an efficient, honest and equitable manner.

“We would be explicit and we will be talking to you particularly to talk to the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) and through you to the forum’s chairman,’’ he said.

“We will need your services from time to time and it is my hope that when we get to that point, whoever amongst you we call, will please come and join us to get us over certain situations.

“We will find you as ready partners,’’ Adamu said, adding that he was a team player and was ready to work with the newly-elected National Working Committee (NWC) members.

“I am a team player; as much as is possible I want to carry everybody along with me.

“But to work with me, not because I’m the best and everything, you have to be loyal, not just to me, but to the party. You have to recognise the authority of the party.

“In all that we do, the interest of the party is paramount,’’ the national chairman stressed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adamu until his emergence was the senator representing Nasarawa West at the Senate.

Presenting Certificates of Return to the NWC members earlier, Gov. Abubakar commended those who contested the party’s executive offices.

He congratulated Adamu for his emergence as the party’s new national chairman and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his guidance and kind words.

Gov. Abubakar particularly thanked Buhari for his appeal to party members to embrace consensus which according to him, helped the election committee to do its job smoothly and easily.

He said out of the 78 positions contested for in the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), consensus was achieved in 66 positions.

This, he said, meant that 12 positions were contested.

“This demonstrates that the APC is indeed one family with members that will always listen to President Buhari and his call for peace and unity of the party,’’ he stressed.

Abubakar also thanked the contestants for comporting themselves in the most decent manner in the interest and progress of the party, adding that they were its heroes.

“Despite their personal interests, they chose to withdraw to allow for consensus so that our party will come out stronger and indeed this was what happened.

“I thank them and I believe they deserve all our commendations and the party will never forget them,’’ Abubakar said. (NAN)

The Ramadan crescent moon was sighted in multiple locations in Nigeria on Friday evening, prompting announcement of the commencement of Ramadan fasting.

In a live broadcast on Friday evening monitored by ABN TV, the Sultan stated that fasting commences on Saturday in accordance with the Sharia.

He noted that according to reports he received, the new moon has been sighted in Sokoto, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, and Plateau.

Checks by ABN TV show Muslims follow a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days.

Ramadan is the ninth lunar month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide as a month for fasting, prayer, reflection, and assisting the needy.

During the period, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, and sexual activities from dawn to dusk for 29 or 30 days.

The sighting of the new moon, after Ramadan, marks the beginning of another month, Shawwal, and the celebration of the Islamic festival, Eid-L-Fitr.

The Ramadan ritual is observed to attain a spiritual bond with God as contained in Qur’an 2:183: “Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn piety and righteousness.”

I’m A Fake Officer, Says Suspected Smuggler Arrested With Police ID Card

The suspected police officer with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police arrested for smuggling by operatives of the Katsina Customs Command last week has confessed that he is not a police officer but only impersonated to enable him to beat security checkpoints with his contraband items.

The suspect who was arrested along Katsina- Kano road was conveying contraband items, including foreign rice, spaghetti, and macaroni in a Toyota Sienna wagon with registration number “LSD 315 FD” when he was intercepted by customs operatives from the Katsina Area Command.

Also found on the suspect, were four different ID cards including that of the police as well as a police ballistic jacket, a handcuff among others.

The impostor was identified as Sirajo Jelani Abdulkadiri, and the police exhibits found on him were later transferred to the Katsina Police Command for further investigation, where he made the confession while being paraded before journalists by the police spokesman in the state, SP Gambo Isah.

Sirajo in his confession said: “I am not a police officer. I only use their ID card and other items found on me to make it easier for me to beat security checkpoints on the road.”

SP Gambo while speaking on the development said: ”The Command wish to inform members of the public for the purpose of clarity and avoidance of doubt that after conducting a thorough and discreet investigation on Sirajo Jelani Abdulkadiri arrested by customs operatives in Katsina for smuggling discovered that the suspect is not a policeman but an impostor as the police ID card found in his possession is fake.”

As a result, SP Gambo said the suspected smuggler will be returned back to the Katsina Command of the Nigerian Customs Service to be prosecuted for smuggling activities.

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu on Friday declared his intention to aspire for the position of the Abia State Governorship in 2023.

Oko Chukwu who was speaking at the State Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Finbarrs road, the state capital stated that the decision to contest for the governorship position was borne out of personal conviction that he can lead the state to take Abia to the next level, leveraging on his years of experience in governance to attract democratic dividend to the people of the state.

Speaking on a five-point agenda; security, economy, care, urban renewal, roads and education (Secure), Oko Chukwu said if he becomes the governor of the state, he was going to leverage on the successes already made, to make the state become the safest in the country.

On his economic agenda for the state if elected governor, the deputy governor said this would be anchored on harnessing the abundant economic, human and material potential in Abia for growth and development.

“The huge investments we have made on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) cannot be sustained without a steady Powder supply. We cannot afford to lose out on the SMEs because that is what the foundation of collective wealth creation”.

Oko Chukwu stated that his Care programme would be a robust healthcare plan that will cover the three levels of healthcare, primary, secondary and tertiary.

On urban renewal and roads, the deputy governor said if he becomes the governor of the state, he would put everything in place to rebuild the old cities of Aba and Umuahia, including their roads infrastructure.

“The roads agenda will focus on the provision of good roads to interconnect the rural and urban centres for easy movement of people and goods.

“The best legacy a leader can give his people is the legacy of education. Our education agenda aims at providing Abia youths with functional 21st century education that would make them self-employed as well as employable at any level of Industrial need”.

Oko Chukwu assured that with the experience he has garnered in government over the years, he would lift Abia to the next level if he becomes the next governor.

“I have been in government and have learned good lessons for success and in areas we succeeded, I have the knowledge and opportunity to make things better for Ndi Abia”.

The deputy governor promised to use his professional background as a chartered accountant to foster and entrench good governance in the state.

He assured in doing so, he will apply the systems of transparency and accountability in the conduct of government business.

“Our cardinal objectives are based on a SECURE Abia agenda which stands for Security, Economy, Care, Urban Renewal, Roads and Education.

“As governor, I will mobilise our state’s resources and our people to rapidly confront our challenges, secure our future and remake our state to be the leader it used to be. 

“Our challenges are enormous and keep assuming new dimensions with alarming urgency for immediate attention.

“Aba, the cash cow of Abia presents a special challenge and I’m certainly not deterred and would build on what the present administration has done”.

Chairman of PDP in the state, Asiforo Okere commended the deputy governor for his humility.

He promised a level playing field for all the aspirants during the primaries.
