Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli shrugged off the controversy surrounding Nigeria international Victor Osimhen’s late return to Italy following his involvement with the Super Eagles during the recent international break.

Victor Osimhen

The striker was in action for Nigeria during the World Cup play-off against Ghana as the three-time African champions failed to secure their spot in the upcoming finals in Qatar.

The 23-year-old missed second-place Napoli’s 3-1 victory against Atalanta as they continue their quest to end their three decades wait to win the Serie A title.

The former Lille forward is the last of his Nigeria teammates to return to their respective clubs following the Qatar 2022 heartbreak and his absence raised eyebrows among the club fans.

As detailed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli wanted to verify Osimhen’s arrival in Naples on Saturday morning but that didn’t happen.

The club, however, confirmed the forward, who was suspended for the Atalanta game due to yellow cards accumulation, arrived back in Italy on Sunday morning.

Giuntoli said the Nigerian arrived on schedule and would not be sanctioned by the club.

“We don’t understand why there is controversy around this, because he was given permission to take time off after international duty and he arrived on schedule,” Giuntoli said.

“He is an extraordinary lad, a great professional, so the question ought to be why these things emerge in the media. Of course, there won’t be a fine, he was given permission.”

Osimhen has been a key member of Luciano Spalletti’s squad, netting 11 goals in 20 Serie A appearances this season.

Federal Government Approved Three-Year Tax Relief To 33 Companies

The Federal Government approved the application of 33 companies seeking pioneer status under the Industrial Development Income Tax Act in 2021.

This was contained in the quarterly PSI reports released by the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission.

The reports also revealed that investments made by the 33 companies during the year amounted to N543.88bn.

It also noted that the government declined the applications submitted by 10 investing firms including the popular FinTech, Flutterwave, during the review period.

The pioneer status is an incentive offered by the Federal Government, which exempts companies from paying income tax for a certain period. This tax exemption can be full or partial.

The incentive is generally regarded as an industrial measure aimed at stimulating investments in the economy.

The products or companies eligible for this pioneer status are products or industries that do not already exist in the country.

An analysis of the first quarter PSI report showed that while the requests of 10 firms were denied, three companies had their applications approved in principle, while six firms were granted PSI for a three-year period.

The report also revealed that 33 firms were benefitting from the tax incentive scheme in Q1, while the requests of 132 companies were still pending.

As at March 31, 2021, the firms granted tax reliefs invested a total of N45.5bn in the Nigerian economy.

The PUNCH had reported in July that Flutterwave was one of the ten companies denied PSI in Q1 2021.

Flutterwave had in February 2022, disclosed that its valuation rose to $3bn, after it was able to raise $250m from a Series D funding round.

At $3bn, using an exchange rate of N570 to one dollar, it means Flutterwave’s valuation is approximately N1.71tn.

A cursory look at the second quarter PSI report for the year 2021 showed that the government granted tax holidays to eight firms who invested an aggregate of N12.8bn.

Seven firms got approval in principle while no application was denied in Q2, the NIPC said.

The report also revealed that 31 firms were benefitting from the tax incentive scheme, while the requests of 160 companies were still pending.

In the third quarter of last year, eight firms were granted PSI while the requests of two companies were rejected.

The firms offered tax holidays invested a whopping N328.5bn into the economy during the review period, the NIPC report said.

The NIPC also revealed that the government granted approval in principle to 16 firms, 168 applications were pending and 35 companies were benefitting from the government’s tax incentive in Q3.

Meanwhile, the latest PSI report from the NIPC revealed that in the last quarter of the year, six companies were granted tax reliefs for a three-year period.

The companies are First Independent Power Company, Cormart Nigeria Limited, Premium Agro Chemicals Limited, West African Soy Industries Limited, Prudent Energy and Services Limited, and Checkers Africa Limited.

These companies contributed N157.08bn to total investments in Q4 2021.

Further analysis of the Q4 report revealed that, during the period, 13 companies had their applications approved in principle while the application of one company was denied.

As at the end of 2021, 46 companies were benefiting from the tax incentive scheme while the requests of 186 companies were still pending.

The Acting Executive Secretary, NIPC, Emeka Offor, had in an interview with The PUNCH assured stakeholders that the commission would , this year, partner with local and global stakeholders to boost Foreign Direct Investments into the country.

Emeka had said, “I can assure you that already, we have been getting greater response and inquiries from potential investors, within the country and across the globe.

“We plan to hold more stakeholder engagements in 2022.”

Kaduna Train Attack: Arewa Consultative Forum Begs FG To Declare Total War Against Banditry

President Buhari

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has asked the Federal Government to look at the possibility of engaging ex-servicemen, the civilian task forces, hunters, and whatever is available to secure all vulnerable communities against attacks by bandits and terrorists.

The recommendation follows the recent train attack in Kaduna State that claimed eight lives and injured 26 while some others are still missing.

In a statement titled “Time to Further Reflect,” signed by its National Secretary, Murtala Aliyu the ACF, noted that the holistic submission on the failure of governance, as attested by the state governors, is an indication that all is not well in the nooks and corners of the territory called Nigeria.

It, therefore, said that the survival of the country must be paramount, and the lives and property of citizens, law and order, and freedom of expression must be protected.

While noting the frustration of leaders at the sub-national level, the Arewa Consultative Forum, however, called on the government, governors, and citizens alike, to avoid any fire brigade approach on any pressing issue that is bedeviling the country.

“The security of the country rests on the central government and calls for a cursory, calm, implementable, and lasting solution. It emphasised that invitation of foreign forces or mercenaries to fight our course must be treaded with utmost caution.”

On the proposition for the Nigerian Airforce to escort trains from Abuja to Kaduna, Ibadan to Lagos, or the Itakpe routes, the Forum called on the security agency to redesign their operations and instead deploy their machinery and manpower in launching attacks on the bandits and terrorist enclaves.

“Dedicating such operations to only railway lines shall make air and road users more vulnerable to such attacks. The new dimension of the terror attacks, in the country, both on human and infrastructure calls for total war,” the forum argued.

“Nigeria, most especially the northern states, could not be said to be in the state of tranquility that warrants development. The entire country cries for peace. This calls for sober reflection and absolute return to our Creator for repentance. The ACF calls on the leadership of our political parties to structure their manifestos to address our challenges and refocus our psyche towards the peaceful growth and development of the country and not the current race for the sake of power or material gains”.

“We must appreciate the responsibility bestowed on us by providence as the largest black nation and as a leader on our continent must do everything within our powers to keep Nigeria stable and strong.”

2023: Buhari Has Laid Foundation For Success I Can Build On, Says Gov. Yahaya Bello

0

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his infrastructure drive and efforts at tackling insecurity. The Kogi State leader says he will build on such a legacy if elected as Nigeria’s president.

The governor said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He accused the leading opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of failure to build infrastructure in the country.

“Today, I am running to build on the successes of President Muhammadu Buhari because of his performance,” the governor said during the current affairs show.

“In 2015, I dare not because there was no foundation whatsoever to build upon. But today under APC, President Muhammadu Buhari has been able to lay the foundation that I can build upon.”

Governor Bello is one of the serving politicians who have declared interest in running for the presidential seat. He officially declared for the post on Saturday, promising to give hope to Nigerians, transform the economy and raise 20 million millionaires in seven years if elected.

“I mean every bit of it,” the governor re-echoed as he called on Nigerians to look inward for solutions to the problems affecting the country.

The governor referenced the apprenticeship system in the southeast, maintaining that for every challenge facing Nigeria, solutions abound if the nation looks inward.

“Why can’t we in this country develop homegrown solutions to our own problems?” he asked.

He also spoke about the management of resources in the north-central state and dismissed claims that workers are being owed.

According to him, salaries are being paid within the limits of resources available to the government. He maintained that if workers are owed, there would have said so.

President Macron Wants Complete Stop Of Coal And Oil Exports From Russia To EU After Bucha “War Crimes”

French President Emmanuel Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron said it’s “his wish” to see a total block on Russian exports of coal and oil to the European Union “this week,” following the discovery of what he described as “war crimes” in the Ukrainian town of Bucha.

French President Emmanuel Macron

Speaking Monday on French broadcaster France Inter, Macron said there are “very clear signs” war crimes have been committed in Bucha and, “it’s pretty established that it’s the Russian army” who are responsible for them.

“We can’t let it slide. We must have sanctions that dissuade with what’s happened there (in Bucha), what’s happening at Mariupol,” he said.

Macron said that he would have discussions with his European partners this week regarding further sanctions.

“Those who are behind these crimes must answer for them,” he said.
“We must send the signal very clear that it’s our collective dignity and it’s our values that we defend,” he added. “There’s no peace without justice.”

France stands ready to assist Ukraine in its investigation of the events in Bucha, Macron said, yet he refused to state if Russian President Vladimir Putin should face trial over what happened there.

Zelensky Calls For Increased Pressure On Russia To End War

In a video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for an end to Russian “war crimes.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky Of Ukraine

His address came after reports of dozens of bodies found in the streets and mass graves in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

“The world has already seen many war crimes. At different times. On different continents. But it is time to do everything possible to make the war crimes of the Russian military the last manifestation of such evil on earth,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky called on Russian leaders to be held accountable for the actions of the nation’s military.

“I want all the leaders of the Russian Federation to see how their orders are being fulfilled. Such orders. Such a fulfillment. And joint responsibility. For these murders, for these tortures, for these arms torn off by explosions that lie on the streets. For shots in the back of the head of tied people. This is how the Russian state will now be perceived. This is your image,” Zelensky said.

In his address, Zelensky announced a “mechanism of justice” would be established to investigate crimes committed by Russian soldiers in Ukrainian territory. The mechanism would be supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Prosecutor General, the National Police, the Security Service, the Intelligence Service and other government branches, he said.

“This mechanism will help Ukraine and the world bring to concrete justice those who unleashed or in any way participated in this terrible war against the Ukrainian people and in crimes against our people,” he said.

Zelensky said he will provide more information on the state of Ukrainian territory that was occupied by Russian forces.

“All partners of Ukraine will be informed in detail about what happened in the temporarily occupied territory of our state. War crimes in Bucha and other cities during the Russian occupation will also be considered by the UN Security Council on Tuesday,” he said.

He also noted efforts are underway to restore electricity and water to Bucha, as well as reestablishing medical institutions and infrastructure.

Zelensky once again invoked the need for stronger sanctions against Russia.

“There will definitely be a new package of sanctions against Russia. But I’m sure that’s not enough. More conclusions are needed. Not only about Russia, but also about the political behavior that actually allowed this evil to come to our land,” he said.

Everton's Forward, Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi says Everton have pushed the reset button ahead of 11 “cup finals” to finish the Premier League campaign.

Everton’s Forward, Alex Iwobi

Forward Iwobi was the last-gasp hero when Everton beat Newcastle United for three precious points 16 days ago.

The explosion of noise inside Goodison Park after Iwobi struck deep into stoppage time was illustrative of the importance of the goal in the context of Everton’s campaign.

“This is to stay in the best league in the world and… we need to fight for our club.

“There are no individuals, we are ready to bounce back and fight as a team.

“Everyone is ready to fight and show people what we are capable of.”

Iwobi, who joined Everton from Arsenal in August 2019, has started four of Frank Lampard’s seven Premier League matches in charge.

He played from the beginning against Newcastle and was still full of running when a barmy game entered the ninth minute of time added on.

On an individual note, Iwobi is ready to seize his increasing opportunities under Lampard, a confirmed fan of the player’s industry and ability.

“Every player thrives on confidence and if the manager has faith and belief in you, it gives you an extra boost to express yourself – and this manager gives me that confidence,” said Iwobi.

Communication Minister Lands In Problem As ASUU Declares It's Professorship Illegal
Isa Ali Pantami

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, announced this in a statement on Monday, saying that the move was part of the implementation of the NIN-SIM linkage Policy of the government.

The statement was jointly signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission, Ikechukwu Adinde; and Head, Corporate Communications, National Identity Management Commission, Kayode Adegoke.

The Federal Government had mandated telecommunications subscribers to link their SIMs with their NINs in December 2020, as part of the regime’s “security and social policies” but many Nigerians have faulted the effectiveness of the NIN-SIM linkage as kidnappers of Abuja-Kaduna train passengers and others still phone victims’ families to demand ransom and go scot-free, untraced with their NINs.

In the statement released on Monday, Pantami said as of date, over 125 million SIM cards have had their NINs submitted for linkage, verification and authentication while the NIMC has issued over 78 million NINs till date.

The statement was titled, ‘NIN-SIM Linkage: Federal Government Commends Compliance and Directs Telcos to Bar Outgoing Calls on Unlinked Lines from 4th April, 2022’.

It partly read, “Accordingly, Mr. President graciously approved the many requests to extend deadlines for the NIN-SIM linkage.

“At this point, however, Government has determined that the NIN-SIM Policy implementation can proceed, as machinery has already been put in place to ensure compliance by citizens and legal residents. The implementation impacts on Government’s strategic planning, particularly in the areas of security and socio-economic projections.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the implementation of the Policy with effect from the 4th of April, 2022. Consequently, the Federal Government has directed all Telcos to strictly enforce the Policy on all SIMs issued (existing and new) in Nigeria.

“Outgoing calls will subsequently be barred for telephone lines that have not complied with the NIN-SIM linkage Policy from the 4th of April, 2022.

“Subscribers of such lines are hereby advised to link their SIMs to their NINs before the Telcos can lift the restriction on their lines. Affected individuals are hereby advised to register for their NINs at designated centres and thereafter link the NINs to their SIMs through the channels provided by NIMC and the Telcos, including the NIMC mobile App.”
