Finland’s decision on NATO membership is expected to be “much clearer” before May 17 when the country’s president will visit Sweden, according to a senior Western diplomat with knowledge of Finland’s proceedings.

Following weeks of hearings from parliamentarians, the Finnish Foreign Affairs Committee is expected to draft a response on the Finnish government’s security report — which includes the option of joining NATO — as early as May 11, the diplomat said.

Following the publication of the committee response, Finland’s parliament will hold an extraordinary debate on whether to approve the security report recommendations.

Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin have not yet expressed a position on NATO membership, but both have promised to publicly express an opinion after the conclusion of Finland’s parliament debate, according to the diplomat.

They added that Finland is coordinating closely with Sweden as both countries would benefit from proceeding with NATO membership on the same schedule.

The diplomat also told journalists on Thursday that “the Russian Federation has a long-standing policy against the accession of new countries to NATO, especially those close to its borders,” and that Finland, in its security report, had laid out its “preparedness for hybrid and cyber influence activities.”

They said that, so far, Finland has “not seen active measures by Russia to contrary possible Finnish application to NATO” and explained that Finnish Defence Forces have said there is “no active military threat against Finland” at this point

Meanwhile, the source said they are convinced that Finland — which shares an 800-mile-long border with Russia — would “bring added value to NATO.”

“Finland is already protecting the northern flank of the alliance and with a defence integrated into NATO’s planning and command structures, Finland could do that even more effectively,” they added, also noting that “immediately after the attack, support for NATO membership among the Finnish public increased dramatically.”

Citing multiple opinion polls, the source said that at least 60% of Finns are now in favor of NATO membership, which “are really historic numbers because for 30 years in Finland, the support for joining NATO has been between 20 and 30% at most.”

Champions League: What Inspired Real Madrid’s Comeback Against Man City – Ancelotti

0

Carlo Ancelotti said the “history of the club” helped his Real Madrid side stage another Champions League comeback to down Manchester City on Wednesday and reach the final.

The 13-time European champions trailed 1-0 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate in the last-four tie entering the 90th minute, but Rodrygo scored a late double and Karim Benzema’s extra-time penalty sent them through.

Real had also come from behind to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 and Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

“I cannot say we are used to living this kind if life, but what happened tonight it happened against Chelsea and also against PSG,” Ancelotti said after becoming the first coach in history to reach five finals in the competition.

“If you have to say why, it is the history of this club that helps us to keep going when it seems that we are gone.

“The game was close to finished and we managed to find the last energy we had.”

The 6-5 aggregate triumph sends Madrid into a record-extending 17th Champions League final, where Ancelotti could set a new record of four European Cups as a coach.

Six-time winners Liverpool will be their opponents in the final on May 28 in Paris.

“I am happy to be there in the final, in Paris against another great rival,” added the 62-year-old Ancelotti.

“We are used to it. It will be a fantastic game for football.”

Ancelotti also became the first coach to win all five of Europe’s top leagues when Real sealed the La Liga title last weekend.

2023: Inability Of Igbo To Emerge President Means Automatic Biafra Declaration – Southeast Youths Kick

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders, COSEYL, the apex socio-political youth group in the South-East geopolitical zone says attempts by the All Progressives Congress, APC; Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; and other political parties to zone presidential tickets to other regions would resort to the declaration of Biafra.

A statement issued on Thursday by the President General of COSEYL, Goodluck Ibem, alleged that the two major political parties have concluded plans to zone tickets to the North.

The coalition argues that regions in the South also have all the rights to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

According to the coalition, “it is unconstitutional, a treasonable offence and a defiant suspension of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for anyone to throw away the rotation of the office of the President between the North and South as encapsulated in the federal character principle in the Nigerian constitution.

“When a particular section of the country is excluded from governance and other political positions, it means automatically that they have been told in plain language that they are no longer part of the country which is invariably a declaration of another country in a country.

“We want our brothers from the North to know that the South is not begging for the position of the President of Nigeria, but it is our constitutional right to produce the Nigerian president come 2023.

“The same way the Nigerian government explores the oil deposits in the South as a property of the federal government, so also it is the right of Nigerians from the South to produce the president of Nigeria come 2023”.

“Why I Want A Foreign Coach For The Super Eagles” — Udeze

0

Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze has said he would prefer a foreign coach to handle the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to announce a new coach for the Eagles following the exit of former handler Austine Eguavoen.

Though the football body has since named assistant coaches for the Eagles, they are yet to appoint a new handler.

And commenting on the delay in appointing a new coach, Udeze made it clear that he would not have a problem if a local coach is appointed but his preferred choice remains a foreigner.

“Left to me I will prefer a foreign coach to handle the Super Eagles because of what just happened,” he said on Brila FM.

“We had a local coach but we all saw what happened, he failed to qualify us for the World Cup. But if the NFF go-ahead to appoint a local coach no problem because there is no time, the 2023 AFCON qualifiers are close but my preferred choice is a foreign coach.”

The Eagles will hope to bounce back from the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup qualifier when the race for the 2023 AFCON kicks off.

They are in the same qualifying group as Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Principe or Mauritius.

The suspects were said to have sent messages to aspirants on the party platform, requesting huge sums of money to help them secure the party’s tickets.

The Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Communications, Fred Latimore, in a statement on Tuesday, quoted the party chairman as appealing to aspirants not to part with their hard-earned money “as Yahoo fraudsters capitalise on the ongoing electioneering contests to defraud desperate politicians in the state.”

Latimore said, “The PDP Delta State chairman affirmed that the unscrupulous criminal elements cloned his mobile phone number with which they sent messages to PDP aspirants requesting huge sums of money to be favoured with the party’s tickets at the primaries scheduled to hold from May 7, 2022.

“The Delta PDP chairman stated that the fraudsters’ phone number is 0703 503 6524, but when checked via True Caller app, Esiso’s name would surface as the registered owner of the phone number.”

The chairman was quoted to have said, “It is true that my phone number has been cloned by some hardened criminals. The gang’s phone number is 0703 503 6524, which they linked to my identity when checked via the True Caller app.
