Ekweremadu Recounts Kidnapping Experience At 60th Birthday

Ekweremadu: Ohanaeze Raises Fresh Alarm, Cries To ECOWAS, FG

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, says God’s faithfulness in keeping his covenant with him in the early part of his life accounts for whatever success he has achieved in life.

Ekweremadu, who recounted that he came from a highly challenging part of Enugu State, said that as a young man, he asked God to lift him so he would be able to lift his people and the people of Enugu State.

He also narrated how he was kidnapped 22 years ago, and days after, his abductors gave him N1,500 to transport back home.

The lawmaker revealed this during a thanksgiving service to mark his 60th birthday at the Cathedral Church of the Good Shepherded, Anglican Communion Enugu.

He said “I had a covenant with God early in life. I asked God for his mercy and favour so I could lift others up. I prayed God to give me an opportunity to be able to transform the society and assured Him that if he did that for me, as a testimony and a constant reminder, I would build a church for Him.

“When His Lordship, the Bishop, spoke about some of my travails, he didn’t remember to say that I was kidnapped in the year 2000 at Onu Asata in Enugu metropolis and was taken to Anambra State. I went to one bush with the kidnappers and passed the night with them.

“The next day, I was taken to Benue State from there. We later returned to Nsukka and just by the single grace of God, they let me go and gave me N1,500 for my transport.

“Not many people can be that lucky. So, I thanked God and trust him. Today, by the grace of God, I am seeking the Office of the Governor of Enugu State. The idea is to create a completely new Enugu State where good governance will be showcased.

“We intend to deal with the issues of unemployment, which is affecting our society and creating the opportunity for crimes to thrive.”

He added, “So, this 60th anniversary is 60 years of thanksgiving. It is about 60 years of grace and God’s favour.”

Earlier in a homily, Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Anglican Communion, Bishop Emmanuel Chukwuma extoled Ekweremadu’s contributions to the development of Enugu State and Nigeria, describing him as the best Senator in Enugu State.

He said that by his personal fact check, Ekweremadu remained an outstanding legislator in Nigeria and the best in the history of Enugu State.

Chukwuma, however, said he would not endorse him for governorship instead let the will of God be done in his aspiration.

We’re Against Igbo Presidency — Northern Group

0

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), on Thursday, lambasted members of Igbo Elders’ Consultative Forum (IECF) and other groups clamouring for the emergence of a president of South-East extraction, saying they are going about their agitation in a wrong manner.

The CNG alleged that the Igbo elders constituted a serious security threat to the country, adding that their recent warning that any attempt to elude the South-East geopolitical zone of the presidency in 2023 would rupture Nigeria’s corporate existence betrayed their desperation.

The Northern Coalition, therefore, called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of IECF members led by former Anambra governor, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, for threatening the nation, its institutions and the people.

CNG Spokesman, Abdulazeez Suleiman, while addressing journalists in Abuja, also knocked other Igbo leaders who, according to him, are thirsty for the zone to produce Nigeria’s next President for allegedly seeking to tamper with the nation’s criminal justice system by pressuring for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

It would be recalled that there have been intense political posturing, permutations and fireworks, especially as the eight-year tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is from the North-West, winds down.

However, the clamour for an Igbo President has since resonated with some 18 months to the general elections, especially as the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has been consistent in its demand for an Igbo President in 2023.

But the CNG argued that the continued resort to attacks on agents and symbols of the Federal Government of Nigeria in the South-East have deepened the fears that the Igbo cannot and should never be trusted with presidential power and rendered their renewed desperation for the Igbo presidency suspect.

Suleiman said, “The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has taken stock of events in Nigeria, particularly in the past few months when our democracy, political unity and national security have come under serious scrutiny, noting especially, the unrelenting violent disturbances created around certain interests of the Igbo people.

“This is confirmed by the utterances and actions of such Igbo leaders as the former Governor of Anambra State and Chairman of the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, when he threatened the continued existence of Nigeria during a condolence visit paid to him by Igbo leaders of thought and traditional rulers on April 5, 2022.

“Similarly, groups of Igbo leaders and elders have engaged in desperate covert and overt efforts to secure the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the IPOB terror group standing trial for crimes against the state.

“As if these were not enough, same group of Igbo elders again recklessly issued a national security threat on May 4, 2022, that any attempt to elude the zone of the presidency in 2023 may rupture the existence of Nigeria as a corporate entity as well as aggravate crisis, conflicts, separatist demands and others.

Observations

The CNG observes that the perpetrators of this senseless violence are relentlessly pursuing the agenda of destruction and collective mayhem, fervently hoping it will engulf the entire country and bring about another civil war and mass killings.

“This has deepened the fears that the Igbo cannot and should never be trusted with presidential power and rendered their renewed desperation for the Igbo presidency suspect.

“The foregoing observations have made it impossible for us to remain indifferent or silent in the face of such extreme provocations and insistent drive towards civil strife.

Resolutions

“In the present circumstance, the CNG hereby declares the following definite stand: To declare that the Igbo as a people have by their serial atrocious actions inadvertently foreclosed every hope for the rest of us to continue coexisting with them as one nation.

“To demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of all the Igbo leaders and elders involved in the desperation to tamper with the nation’s criminal justice system by pressuring for the unconditional release of terrorist leaders.

“To demand the arrest and prosecution of all the Igbo leaders that openly threaten national security and corporate existence of the Nigerian nation in desperation for an Igbo presidency.

“To take every political and legal measure to frustrate and resist the dangerous Igbo scheme to secure Nigeria’s presidency in 2023 or anytime in the future, including: warning any northern politician against picking any Igbo man from whatever part of Nigeria as running mate, and mobilising the North against supporting, participating, in or, in anyway romancing with any political party that fields a candidate of the South East or has any Igbo politician in a position of prominence.

“To demand immediate resort to available decent and civilized means for the actualization of the final separation of the South-East from the rest of Nigeria in order to avoid the mishaps intended by the Igbo’s evil plans and avert unnecessary devastation on the entire country.

“To demand relevant Nigerian authorities and international agencies to step in and support the pending court process seeking for a referendum that will finally separate the South East from Nigeria to prevent a descent into another civil war at this day and age, as well as forestall the mass killings, untold sufferings and atrocities intended by the Igbo.”

Suleiman, however, maintained that the CNG would remain committed to the search for a Nigerian leader with the capacity, competence and credibility to be trusted and accepted by all Nigerians irrespective of his tribe, religious calling or regional background except of course, the Igbo and the South-East.

“The CNG also recommits to the pursuit of a legal framework for the conduct and implementation of a general referendum to determine the status of the South-East or any enclave that wishes for self determination from Nigeria,” he added

EPL Top Four Battle Not Over Yet – Arteta Insists

0

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has reiterated that the Gunners is still in the top four race of the Premier League despite losing 3-0 to Tottenham on Thursday.

Two goals from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min’s second-half effort gave a dent to the Gunners’ top four hopes, closing the gap with Spurs to just one point.

Arteta could not resist the temptation of slamming referee Paul Tierney after the game, accusing the Englishman of destroying the beautiful game.

However, the former Manchester City assistant coach has revealed his discussion with Arsenal players, telling BBC Sport: “I have already picked them up.

“This game is history and all our focus is Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle. I told them I was so proud of them and if we do what we did in the first half an hour here, we will be fine against Newcastle.

“I worry a lot about today. I really, really worry about today, but I don’t worry about the performance of my players. I want to be where we deserve to be.”

Arteta Aggrieved With Referee Decision

“If I say what I think I am suspended for six months,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “I don’t know how to lie so I prefer not to say what I think. I cannot say what I think.

“I want the referees to come in front of the camera and explain his decisions. It’s a shame because such a beautiful game was destroyed today.

“I am not unhappy with my players. I am proud of my players. The decision was made. We can’t change it. The referee has to make a decision in football.”

Personal life

Arteta was born 26 March 1982 in San Sebastián, in northern Spain’s mountainous Basque Country. He is multilingual, and is fluent in Spanish, Basque, Catalan and English. He also speaks some French, Italian and Portuguese.

He is married to Argentine-Spanish actress, television host, and model Lorena Bernal. The couple have three children: Gabriel (born 2009), Daniel (born 2012) and Oliver (born 2015).

Ten Hag: I’m Ready To Restore Man United Glory Days

0

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has declared that he’s prepared to face the huge managerial job at Old Trafford.

In an interview with Voetbal International, the Dutch tactician, who guided Ajax to another Erendivisie title on Wednesday, stated that he’s confident of restoring the glory days of the club.

Ten Hag also revealed that his first contact with United officials came during the March international break, having been quizzed on the moment he actually decided to ditch Ajax.

“It felt like a difficult but great challenge. That is the most beautiful thing there is. There is something to build at United and something to gain. Manchester United is such a big name in football history. It feels like a challenge to put the club back on track of winning.

“Old Trafford is nicknamed the Theatre of Dreams for a reason. It is a club with name, fame and allure in international football. Everyone knows the history of the beautiful teams. From Sir Alex Ferguson of course, but also further back in time. The great team of the late fifties, which suddenly disappeared with the plane crash.

“The history is impressive, but I also started to delve into the present and the future. And the options that are available. They are there, also financially. If you also get a good feeling about the people there, then the picture is right and then the factors are present to take this step.”

“That was not so long ago,” the ex-Utrecht and Bayern Munich reserves manager explained.

“They also really knew a lot about me. They had done scouting, made analyses, gathered data, had interviews with people who had worked with me. Several rounds of discussions followed from there. So they didn’t decide overnight. Neither did I.

“Those conversations were so good that I got the feeling: I want to take on that challenge. Then it started to come to life in my head and I made the decision that I would leave Ajax.”

The train of his support group, Ekweremekwe Movement had landed in Obingwa, Aba North and South Local Government Areas, LGAs, where he preached the message of hope and ‘freedom from fear’ which he said he represents.

The supporters sang and danced, cheering and urging Mayor Lucky Igbokwe to come and rescue Abia State as a tested and trusted private sector operator.

The PDP stakeholders and delegates expressed excitement about the prospects of a Mayor Lucky Igbokwe governorship as they unanimously pledged to work towards its actualisation come 2023.

Mayor Lucky Igbokwe told the PDP stakeholders that he is committed to changing the tide in Abia politics, urging the people to commit themselves to breaking the jinx of imposition of candidates which has become like a phenomenon in the state.

The Ohuhu Umuahia born entrepreneur and entertainment icon who held his audience spell bound in his presentations, said he is running on his individual strength and merit because he has no ‘godfather’ behind him except God the Father. Mayor Igbokwe noted that Abians have been taken for granted by the leadership and must determine to change their situation as he presents himself a better option to the service of Abia state.

He called on the stakeholders to do away with clannish sentiments because it’s an available tool in the hands of politicians to divide the people and take away their right to choose their leaders, and added that he is not a desperate politician but concerned about the welfare of the people.

Mayor Lucky Igbokwe (Don Lulu) said as a private individual and through the Don Lulu Foundation which he established, he has been able to build houses not only for widows, but for homeless and miserable people in the society to help ameliorate their sufferings, as well as supported youth empowerment programmes. To him if he can do this much as a private person with little resources available, there would be no limit to what he can deliver using the instrument of government.

The Obingwa LGA Chairman, Elder Seth Agomuo, encouraged Mayor Igbokwe to continue with his activities believing that it’s God that gives power. He asked him to continue from where Gov Okezie Ikpeazu stopped because he has laid the foundation, while he wished Don Lulu and his team success.

Hon Chukwudi Dike, the zonal secretary of the party said they have refused to be used and dumped like tissue paper, promising that 2023 election would mark a turning point in the history of Abia State.

2023: Edwin Clark Is Shameless, Betrayal Runs In His DNA - Arewa Group
Edwin Clark

Arewa Peace and Solidarity Initiative, APSI, on Friday, lambasted an elder statesman, Edwin Clark over his utterances concerning 2023 presidential election.

The group said betrayal runs in Clark’s DNA because he allegedly worked against Igbos during the Biafran war in 1967 and also worked against his own Ijaw brother, former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Clack had in a statement he signed yesterday accused a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of betraying the South-East geo-political zone.

APSI National Coordinator, Dr. Bashir Lamido said the group was disappointed with Clark’s position.

In a statement, reads: “We are surprised to read a statement from a supposed elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark accusing the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of betraying his people ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Clark’s outburst is annoying and highly irritating. Is he saying that the North-East geo-political zone is not eligible to contest the presidential election? Is Ahmad Lawan not qualified to govern Nigeria? When did Edwin Clark started loving the Igbos to the point of becoming their spokesperson? It is on record that he betrayed Biafra during the war of 1967-1970 against his brothers and sisters in and today where is Edwin Clark in the scheme of things in Nigeria.

“Clark must know that his inconsequential utterances cannot stop Lawan from succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. We know his job and DNA is betrayal and sabotage even though he sabotaged his brother former President Goodluck Ebele Johnathan as president of Nigeria. He always takes sabotage and betrayal as norms. It is unbelievable and unfortunate he continues doing this until younger generations know that it is his hubby.

“The likes of Edwin Clark are the reason the South is badly divided especially the South-East and South-South geo-political zones. A man at the age of Edwin Clark is supposed not to be economical with the truth or deceive the young generation because of parochial interest.”

Ronaldo Claims Second Premier League POTM Award Of The Season

Why Ronaldo Is Desperate To Leave Man United, Says Nani

Ronaldo Claims Second Premier League POTM Award Of The Season

Manchester United Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as the Premier League’s Player of the Month for April.

Ronaldo, who has now claimed the award for the second time this season after first winning it in September, was announced as the winner on the Premier League Twitter handle on Thursday.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is the @EASPORTSFIFA Player of the Month for the second time this season.”

The Portuguese international, who returned to Old Trafford last summer, scored five goals in four games last month, helping United earn four points all by himself.

He bagged a hat-trick in the 3-2 win over Norwich City and the equalizer in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, both at Old Trafford. Also, he found the back of the net in the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

He saw off competition from seven other Premier League players to earn the award, including Manchester City duo Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus.

In what has proven to be a hugely underwhelming campaign for United, Ronaldo has been a shining light, scoring 24 goals in all competitions.

Of his 24 strikes, 18 of them have come in the Premier League, meaning only Mohamed Salah (22) of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur ace Son Heung-min (20) have scored more.

Ronaldo’s treble against Norwich marked his 50th career hat-trick in club football, while his goal at the Emirates Stadium against Mikel Arteta’s Gunners was his 100th in the Premier League.

His latest Player of the Month prize means that he is now just one behind Tottenham’s Harry Kane and former City striker Sergio Aguero in equalling the record number of Premier League Player of the Month awards that have been won. He is currently level with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard on six.

Burnley caretaker boss Mike Jackson was named the Premier League manager of the month, after picking up four crucial wins in The Clarets’ fight for survival.

Jackson replaced Sean Dyche who was sacked as Burnley’s manager following strings of poor results.
