Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Wednesday, informed a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja that he has been a fan of Liverpool Football Club since childhood.

Kanu disclosed this when Justice Binta Nyako jokingly asked him his favourite football team.

The IPOB leader said he had been a fan of Liverpool Football Club since he was seven, NAN reports.

The development occurred when Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, complained that the Department of State Services (DSS) had not been allowing him and other counsel enough time to meet with the IPOB leader whenever they visited him in detention.

The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, who reminded Ozekhome that he had once thanked the DSS in open court for procuring an orthopaedic mattress, pillow and others for his client, said she had already ordered that the security outfit should give Kanu moderate treatment and care while in detention like food, clothing, medicare, etc.

Then Nyako turned to Kanu and said despite her order for him to change his clothes, the IPOB leader continued to put on the same milk-colour designer wear.

The judge said though Kanu, on his own accord, keeps coming into the court with the same attire, she saw him in the media with other clothes.

The judge then jokingly said she was a Liverpool fan and asked Ozekhome if he was also a fan of a football club, and the senior lawyer answered in the affirmative.

He said he was also a fan of Liverpool F.C.

Nyako then asked Kanu if he was a fan of Chelsea Football Club, going by the designer’s clothes he keeps wearing to court.

“What is your team?” she asked.

Kanu gently stood up in the dock and said: “My team is Liverpool even from the age of seven”.

The judge then told the DSS legal director, who was in court, to always allow Kanu to watch the matches of his favourite football club.

“You must allow the defendant to watch the matches any day they are playing,” she said, adding that she was going to make an order to that effect.

The DSS official, however, said his office had always given him access to watch.

Former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has advised new Technical Adviser of the national team Jose Peseiro not to toe the line of his predecessor Gernot Rohr.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the appointment of Peseiro on Sunday after months of screening of all the nominees for the vacant Super Eagles job.

Nigeria had been without a substantive head coach since the NFF fired Rohr in November 2021, following unimpressive performances by the team.

It was anticipated that the NFF would appoint a new coach immediately after Nigeria failed to pick the ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar,
but it took close to two months after Nigeria lost the ticket to Ghana before the federation finally decided to end the wait.

Chukwu who had earlier lamented that the delay in the appointment of a new coach could jeopardize the country’s bid to qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast expressed delight that the delay is over.

The former national team captain advised the 62-year-old former Saudi Arabia and Venezuela coach to monitor the local league in the country and develop players.

During his time, Rohr rarely lived in Nigeria throughout the almost five and half years he was in charge of the Eagles. The 68-year-old Franco-German also did not reckon with players in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

“I’m very happy so that it does not delay our preparation for Nations Cup qualifiers and let’s see what he will do when he comes,” Chukwu told Brila FM about the hiring of Jose Peseiro

“I will like him to live here, monitor our leagues and our players; let him not be like Rohr who stayed in Germany. Then days after the match, he will come back to the country with the players and so on.

“I will like this one to stay in Nigeria if they have accommodation for him and everything and let’s see how it goes.”

104 All-Male APC Aspirants Set To Contest For 30 Jigawa Assembly Seats

At least 104 All Progressives Congress (APC) members are jostling for the party’s tickets to contest for the 30 seats in the Jigawa State House of Assembly.

“We’ve so far sold 104 forms for the 30 House of Assembly seats, chairman of the party in Jigawa, Alhaji Aminu Sani, told newsmen on Wednesday in Dutse.

“I cannot tell you the number of governorship, and National Assembly aspirants in Jigawa since they bought their forms at the national headquarters,’’ he said.

Sani noted, however, that no single female aspirant showed interest in the state’s House of Assembly seats.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the 104 aspirants for the House of Assembly seats consist of sitting members and those eyeing the seats for the first time.

APC Women Leader in the state, Hajiya Dayyaba Shuaibu, told NAN that three women had earlier indicated their interest to contest the elections.

“Three women contacted me that they wanted to contest for seats in the Assembly.

“Unfortunately, I traveled to Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj and they could not buy the forms.

“After I returned, they told me that they did not know that the forms were being sold until the exercise had been brought to a close,’’ Shuaibu said.

Asked whether the women were prevented or intimidated from buying the forms, she said: “nobody stopped or prevented them from doing so.’’

She said the women were even directed to contact their ward chairmen and state chairman of the party over their ambitions.

“Unfortunately again, the state chairman was also in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj, but they were able to meet with the deputy, who assured them they were entitled to buy forms to contest the elections.

“Since I was in Saudi Arabia, they couldn’t buy the forms since I was the one guiding and encouraging them.

“We are targeting the 2027 elections to ensure that women participate,’’ Shuaibu said.

The women leader told NAN also that two women from the Kazaure Local Government Area of the state bought forms to contest the National Assembly seats.

She did not give the names of the National Assembly female aspirants but assured us that they had been screened for the primary election.

FG Amends Charges Against Nnamdi Kanu Ahead Of Bail Application Hearing

Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu till May 26, 2022, for the continuation of trial, ABN TV reports.

The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako had announced the adjournment date after dismissing application for bail brought before her by Nnamdi Kanu.

Justice Binta Nyako, in a ruling, held that since Kanu was earlier granted bail in 2017 and jumped the bail, the court must first determine the real reason he jumped the bail before applying for another one.

Justice Nyako then dismissed the application for bail.

She therefore announced the May 26 for continuation of trial.

Court Affirms Adeleke Osun PDP Governorship Candidate

Justice Nathaniel Emmanuel of the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo has affirmed Senator Ademola Adeleke as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Osun governorship election slated for July 16 2022.

The judge dismissed a suit filed by Prince Dotun Babayemi, seeking to be declared the candidate of PDP.

He nullified the primary election that produced Babayemi, which held at WOCDIF event center, Osogbo on March 8th 2022.

The judgement was delivered amidst heavy security and lasted for one hour 45 minutes.

Justice Emmanuel affirmed Senator Ademola Adeleke as the valid elected PDP candidate for the poll.

APC Achieved More In Seven Years Than PDP – National Chairman

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, claims that the ruling party has accomplished more in the previous seven years than any other political party in Nigeria.

Adamu spoke during the inauguration of screening committees for State House of Assembly contenders on Tuesday in Abuja.

The party chairman, who was represented by the Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Abubakar Kyari, stated that he is certain that all of the candidates gathered at the International Conference Centre for screening will uphold the party’s history of excellence.

IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu To Appear In Court Next Week

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has denied the bail application of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Ruling on the bail application, Justice Binta Nyako, said the issue of Kanu’s absence in the past, since 2017, should be determined, before his bail application, will be entertained.

She added that Kanu breached his former bail conditions, and until that is heard, his present bail application is immature.

Ahead of the ruling on the bail application, on Wednesday morning, the Federal Government had filed a six-count amended charge against Kanu.

Justice Nyako, however, berated the prosecution for filing the amended charge just hours before the ruling. She said she was not aware of the amended charge until she got to the court in the morning.

According to her, the prosecution cannot dump the new amended charge on the court, on the morning of the hearing.

Various Setbacks
On dismissing his bail application, the court noted that Kanu’s trial had since 2015, suffered various setbacks owing to over 19 interlocutory applications that have been filed in the matter.

It, therefore, implored the parties to allow the case to proceed to trial to enable the charge to be determined.

Kanu had in the application he filed pursuant to sections 6(6) and 36(5) and (6) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, as well as sections 161, 162, 163 and 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015, prayed the court to release him on bail, pending by determination of the charge against him.

Face Your Campaign – ASUU Berates Past Minister Over Union’s Affairs

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has told the immediate past Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, not to meddle in the union’s affairs.

This is as aggrieved university students storm the streets in some parts of the country over the Federal Government’s failure to address ASUU demands.

Nwajiuba, who resigned last week due to his presidential ambition, in an interview with The PUNCH, had maintained that state universities shouldn’t have joined the ongoing strike since most of ASUU’s demands were challenges being faced by federal universities.

But, in a reaction to Nwajiuba’s comment on the union’s ongoing strike, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, on Tuesday, warned Nwajiuba to steer clear of ASUU matter and concentrate on his campaign.

In an interview with The PUNCH, he said that ASUU is a union of all academics in the Nigerian public universities

Osodeke said, “Nwajiuba doesn’t know anything, he is ignorant. Is Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board conducting exams for federal universities alone? Is National Universities Commission regulating only federal universities?

“He knows nothing, thank God he has left. He should concentrate on his campaign; he should leave ASUU and the government alone. He should leave us alone and go and do his campaign to become president.

“When they get TETfund, does it go to federal universities alone? Even NEEDS assessment? When Nigeria Labour Congress negotiates salaries, does it go to federal workers alone? He is trying to get public support by talking about ASUU; he has left us and we have left him and we are not talking about him.”

Meanwhile, students of various Nigerian universities on Tuesday continued their protests against the ASUU’s ongoing industrial action.
