Trump Returns on Twitter, Vows to Deal With Capitol Hill Protesters

U.S President Donald Trump, is back on Twitter, hours after he was suspended. Trump was banned on Twitter and Facebook after he was alleged to have instigated Capitol Hill riot that led to the death of a woman and destruction of properties in Washington.

On Wednesday a good number of Trump-Supporters stormed Capitol Hill to disrupt the process of certifying Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

With the help of the security agents, the rioters were evacuated, but a large number of Police officers sustained various degrees of injuries. About 5o of them are currently hospitalized.

Haven violated the tenets of US law and democratic principles, Trump in a video posted on his twitter handle vowed to punish perpetrators.

According to him: “Like all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness, and mayhem.

“I immediately deployed the national guard and federal law enforcement to secure the building and expel the intruder. America is and must always be a nation of law and order.

“The demonstrators who infiltrated the Capitol have defied the seat of American democracy. To those who engaged in acts of violence and destruction… you do not represent our country. And to those who broke the law, you will pay.

“We’ve just been through an intense election and emotions are high but now tempers must be cooled and calm restored. We must get on with the business of America.

“My campaign vigorously pursued very legal avenue to contest the election result. My only goal was to ensure the integrity of the election and in so doing, I was fighting to defend America’s democracy.

“I continue to believe that we must reform our election laws to verify the identity and eligibility above others and to ensure faith and confidence in all future elections.

“Now congress has certified the results, a new administration will be inaugurated on Jan. 20. My focus now turns to ensuring an orderly and seamless transition of power.

“This moment calls for healing and reconciliation.

To his “wonderful supporters”, he said: “I know you are disappointed but I also want you to know that our incredible journey is only just beginning.”

Sen. Kalu Receives Thousands of PDP Defectors to APC

Leader of APC in South East and the member representing Abia North senatorial district, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu on Thursday received thousands of People’s Democratic Party, PDP faithful to the party.

The defectors, who came from Aba North Local Government Area of the state, arrived Camp Neya’s country home of Sen. Kalu in Bende Local Government Area of the state where they were formally received.

Kalu said he received them on behalf of the State Chairman of the party, Chief Donatus Nwankpa, and Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Gov. Mai Buni, a Guardian report says.

Speaking at the brief event, Kalu urged them to be of good behaviour and work conscientiously for the party’s victory in 2023.

“We are a disciplined party. We are a party that encourages people to pay workers’ salaries, pensions, build roads and take care of society.

“We have no other business than taking care of the welfare of our people.

“Our business in APC is to think and work toward the welfare of Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra people and Nigerians resident in our state.

“Today is a remarkable day and I want to welcome you to this great party, which is for all Nigerians.

“We believe that this party will make all of us proud. The party believes in the rule of law.

“It believes things should be done well and believes in all Nigerians.

“Your defection to APC shows that this party is the best for Abia and Nigeria.
“We are growing stronger and stronger everyday and our growth will be felt in the 2023 general elections,” he said.

Also, the APC House of Representative’s candidate for Aba North and South in the 2019 poll, Mr Mascot Kalu, commended the defectors for their “bold decision”.

He said that the party’s doors were still open for more prospective defectors.

Earlier, spokesmen of the defectors, Bunch Adiele and Eze Agege, pledged to be law abiding and deliver Aba to APC in 2023.

They appealed to Kalu and the leadership of the party to accept them unconditionally, saying: “We are your sons and daughters residing and doing business in Aba.

“We have realised our mistake and lost our political root.

“But today, we are here to tell you we are sorry and fully back with you. Forgive us and take us back as your children.

“Today, we want to be officially accepted into APC to reunite with the father of politics in Abia.

“All the wards in Aba north are all represented here. We are resolute to return Aba North to APC,” they said.

According to them, the poor governance index in Abia shows that APC will take over the state in 2023.

After 10 Months Closure, NUC Sets Resumption Date For Varsities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has directed vice-chancellors of universities to commence academic activities on January 18, following the closure of the higher academic institutions for about 10 months.

This is in accordance with the directive of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) team on COVID-19.

Recall that the nation’s public universities have been closed since March 2020, following a strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the lockdown occasioned by the curbs introduced to combat the spread of COVID-19 infections.

The union suspended the strike on December 23, 2020 after the federal government partially met their demands, including paying the lecturers their outstanding salaries using an older payment platform, GIFMIS, different from the controversial IPPIS.

The NUC said any further developments will be communicated to universities accordingly, ThisDay report says.The NUC, however, mandated officers on Grade Level 12 and below to remain at home for a period of five weeks as earlier directed by the federal government.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by NUC’s Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration), Chris Maiyaki, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

The executive secretary said the new directive became necessary sequel to several enquires on the full import of the commission’s previous letter, Ref. NUC/ES/138/Vol.63/151 and dated December 23, 2020, on the above subject.

He urged universities to safeguard lives by strictly adhering to the extant safety protocols and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines, which have been communicated severally to the Nigerian University System through NUC’s circulars.

“I am to add that universities on resumption of academic activities, must under no circumstance violate the full cycle of the semester system, consistent with the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) approved by the NUC, as well as other extant quality assurance standards and guidelines,” the statement added.

 

Malnutrition: We Need N29bn to Address Scourge, Says Kaduna Govt

The Kaduna State Government says it needs N29 billion to address the scourge of malnutrition in the state.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the state Permanent Secretary, Planning and Budget Commission, Mr Mahmoud Yamusa, said this in Kaduna on Wednesday, at the opening of a two-day workshop on resource mobilisation.

Yamusa, represented by the Director, Development Aid Coordination, PBC, Mr Salisu Lawal, stressed the need for all relevant stakeholders to support the state in mobilising the needed resources.

He said that various nutrition policies, plans and strategies had been developed by the state, adding that there was a huge gap in financing the planned interventions.

“The state and the local government areas are doing all they can to make the needed resources available, but they cannot do it alone. We need all the support we can get from all stakeholders.

“For example, the Kaduna State Multi-Sectoral Strategic Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition was developed as a tool to implement nutrition-sensitive and specific interventions by the MDAs.

“We, therefore, need resources to ensure that we implement all planned interventions to be able to achieve the 2021 targets,” he said.

The Nutrition Advocacy Advisor, SCI, Malam Isah Ibrahim, commended the state and the local governments for maintaining the more than one-billion-naira annual budget for nutrition interventions. Ibrahim pointed out the N28bn deficit was required to address all malnutrition cases affecting about one million children under five years in the state.

Shock as Nigerian Activist Esther Uzoma Passes on After Surgery

Many Nigerians have been thrown into shock and mourning mood following the announcement of the death of a vibrant activist and gender advocate, Barr. Esther Uzoma.

She was said to have died after surgery in Abuja.

Some civil society organizations have express surprise over the sudden demise of Barr. Uzoma.

The Convener, Concerned Nigerians, Prince Deji Adeyanju in a statement described her as a guiding light in so many issues that she fought for.

He said the late activist was committed to the betterment of the lives of the vulnerable including women, girls, indigent, aged, physically challenged, and others.

She was the convener of the civil society ‘Situation Room NG. A statement released by the organisation says she died on Wednesday after surgery in Abuja.

The statement reads in part, “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Barrister Esther Uzoma’s family and everyone who worked with her.

“Barrister Esther Uzoma was a guiding light in the endless search for Gender equality, human rights, Electoral Reforms, justice for women and vulnerable children.”

The statement commended her boldness and tenacity in pushing for issues that could change the narrative among Nigerians, and was a strong civil society personality that never relented in her quest to ensure the voice of the civic space is not silenced.

“She was indeed a distinguished leader in the civil rights movement. She helped break barriers by using education to empower our girls and fight for their rights through the Proactive Gender Initiatives she founded.

“There is no doubt that Uzoma’s courageous activism changed our nation’s trajectory in tremendous ways”, the statement pointed.

“The group further expressed pain and asserted that, “Our dear sister will certainly continue to be an inspiration to all of us at Concerned Nigerians fighting for justice and equality.

“May her memory be blessed”, it added

Trump Succumbs, Finally Agrees to Handover Power (video)

United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump on Thursday succumbed after several months of fighting to perpetuate self in office despite losing the presidential election.

He pledged commitment to orderly transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden even as he repeated the false claims about the November 3, 2020 election.

The claim triggered Wednesday’s assault on Capitol Building by a mob of his supporters to protest U.S. Congress’ affirmation of Biden’s Electoral College win.

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” Trump said in the statement released overnight after Congress certified his defeat.

He went on: “I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again.”

Trump, who has repeatedly refused to concede the election, on Wednesday incited on his supporters who later breached the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop lawmakers from counting the electoral votes cast in the 2020 presidential election.

“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol. And we’re gonna cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women. And we’re probably not going to be cheering, so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness, you have to show strength and you have to be strong,” Trump said, addressing his supporters who gathered maskless on the ellipse near the White House Wednesday morning.

After a speech filled with lies and misrepresentations that incensed the crowd, Trump returned to the White House to watch a violent crescendo to his constant spreading of misinformation about the electoral process. The mob broke into the Capitol, stormed the House of Representatives and Senate floor. Trump supporters could be seen lounging in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office.

A woman was shot and killed in the chaos. Police have yet to release more details about her death. Three others, who had medical emergencies, later died, according to the police.

Republicans and Democrats condemned the rioters for entering the country’s legislative chambers and destroying federal property. Several lawmakers blamed the breach on Trump.

The riot led to at least four resignations from the Trump administration and some in Trump’s cabinet to hold preliminary talks about invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office, according to a well-placed GOP source.

Biden called on Trump to appear on national television “to fulfill his oath and defend the Constitution and demand an end to this siege”.

He came under mounting pressure yesterday, facing calls to resign or for Vice President Mike Pence to undertake extraordinary constitutional moves to oust him from office.

Chuck Schumer, the top Senate Democrat, called for Pence and the Trump cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment, which provides an avenue for the president to be removed. Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, a staunch Trump critic, also called for Trump’s removal.

Resignations continued to mount yesterday, including Trump’s former chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, and the head of his council of economic advisers. In an apparent bid to quell the outcry, Trump issued a statement overnight committing to an “orderly transition”.

Schumer called for invoking the 25th amendment yesterday — and, barring that, said Congress should reconvene to impeach Trump.

“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection instigated by the president. This president should not hold office one day longer,” Schumer said.

Democrats also were circulating drafts of articles of impeachment.

Kinzinger said Trump “barely” denounced the violence. All indications are that the president has become unmoored, not just from his duty or even his oath but from reality itself,” he said.

Former Republican Congressman Justin Amash also said Trump should quit or be removed.

Financial markets have largely shrugged off the turmoil in Washington, with investors focused on the prospect for a major new round of Covid-19 relief spending after President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

U.S. stocks pared gains Wednesday after news of the violence, and resumed their rally yesterday. The S&P 500 Index was up 1.3 per cent at 12:22 p.m. in New York, heading for a record close. Ten-year Treasury yields were at 1.08 per c ent and hit their highest since March.

Trump had no public events scheduled yesterday. He is set to spend the weekend at Camp David. But he remained frozen out by social media firms as Facebook Inc. announced that it was indefinitely extending its freeze of his accounts for at least two weeks.

The Department of Justice was set to announce charges yesterday against some participants in the mob, while police in Washington were moving forward with investigations of their own. Trump told the crowd he loved them and understood why they were protesting.

Former Attorney-General William Barr joined in criticising Trump, telling the Associated Press that “orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable”.

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf called on “the president and all elected officials to strongly condemn the violence that took place yesterday,” but said he wouldn’t step down before inauguration on January 20.

The White House announced yesterday that it had pulled Wolf’s nomination to be confirmed as secretary.

Carpenter Who Abducted 12-year-old Neighbour, Slit Her Throat in Delta Arrested

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a carpenter in Delta state simply identified as General for his role in the abduction of a 12-year-old neighbour, Blessing Imeh.

She was found with a slit throat in Abraka, in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State after missing on January 1, 2021, while running an errand for her parents.

Our correspondent gathered efforts to find her proved abortive till she was found in a cesspit at the back of their house on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

Her cry inside the cesspit attracted another child, who raised the alarm.

Sources say the victim, after she was rescued, claimed that General, was among the three men that abducted her.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said while General is cooling off the custody, the victim had been taken to a hospital.

She said, “The young girl was stabbed at the back and her throat was slit, but she’s alive and receiving treatment at the moment. She said three people lured her, but she could identify one who is a carpenter and their neighbour. The carpenter, called General, has been arrested and effort is being made to arrest other suspects.” ,,

 

After Stealing Offering Box, Police Nab Church Ex-guard in Ogun

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested an ex-security guard at the Grace Nations Church, aka Liberation City, Mela Samaila, for allegedly breaking into the church auditorium.

Samaila, who reportedly stole the offering box containing an undisclosed amount of money, was arrested shortly after he broke into the church located at Ojodu Abiodun in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, a Punch report says.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed these on Thursday in a statement.

Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested following a distress call received by the police at the Ojodu Abiodun divisional headquarters from security men on duty at the church.

He said the suspect broke into the church around 4am on Thursday.

According to him, the guards told the police that a thief scaled the fence of the church, broke into the main auditorium and made away with the church’s offering box.

He said, “Upon the distress call, the DPO Ojodu Abiodun division, CSP Eyitayo Akinluwade, quickly mobilised his patrol team to the scene, combed the area and succeeded in arresting the suspect with the help of the security men of the church and the offering box was recovered from him.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was once a security man in the church, but was relieved of his duty due to some untoward behaviour.”

The PPRO said the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had directed that the suspect be charged to court.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has been taken to hospital, a Swiss newspaper said Thursday, but media insisted the disgraced official’s life was not in danger.

“My father is in hospital. He’s getting better every day. But he needs time and rest,” his daughter Corinne Blatter Andenmatten was quoted as saying by Blick, which said the 84-year-old was in a serious but non-life-threatening condition.

“On behalf of my family, I ask for privacy,” his daughter said.

Blatter was removed from office in 2015 after 17 years at the head of world football’s governing body.

He was suspended from football for six years over a two million Swiss franc payment to then UEFA boss Michel Platini in 2011.

Buhari, Osinbajo, Others To Take COVID-19 Vaccine On Live Telecast

The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, has said the President Muhammadu Buhari; Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; and other prominent Nigerians will be among the first set to receive the COVID-19 vaccine on live television to help drive awareness.

He said at the weekly press briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Thursday, “On Tuesday, I mentioned that we will like to see a situation where Mr President, the Vice President, the SGF, critical leaders come and take the vaccine in full glare of the public to demonstrate that this vaccine is safe.

“So, we have to make provisions for those. But even in developed countries, what we have seen is that apart from the prioritisation of health workers, you have to also identify critical leaders that you don’t want them to be wiped off by the virus.”

Shuaib said experience had shown that vaccines are always better than health immunity.

He said for COVID-19, it would take approximately 10 years for one to be able to achieve health immunity and many people would have died if health immunity is to be relied upon.

NIMC, MDAs must observe COVID-19 protocols – PTF

The PTF said it was in talks with the National Identity Management Commission on observation of safety protocols at its registration centres across the country.

It stated that all ministries, departments and agencies of government, as well as their chief executives, must comply with the protocols established by the task force in carrying out official activities.

The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, stated this while answering a question on the NIMC’s crowded centres, occasioned by the rush to meet the deadline for mobile telecoms subscribers to link their National Identity Number with their Subscriber Identification Module or risk disconnection.

Aliyu said, “With regard to mass greetings, whether you are a government entity or private sector, all protocol applies across the board. We have been liaising very closely with NIMC; in fact, my phone is probably on fast dial as far as the NIMC DG is concerned.”

According to the PTF coordinator, the challenge the NIMC is having is with the crowds that are outside its premises.

“That challenge definitely needs to be addressed and we have been working with them,” he stated.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the national coordinator noted that compliance with the safety measures is “for our own interest.”

‘Nigerian international travellers faking results’

The SGF and Chairman, PTF, Boss Mustapha, raised the alarm that some Nigerian international travellers have continued to present fake results when travelling outside the country.

He also announced that the President had approved the establishment of at least one new Oxygen plant in each state of the federation, while the existing ones would be made fully functional.

“Efforts are being made to increase the supply of oxygen to our health facilities across the country. Mr President has approved the establishment of at least one new Oxygen plants in each state of the Federation, while the existing ones will be made fully functional.

“It has become embarrassing to note that some Nigerians continue to present fake results when travelling outside the shores of this country. This remains a major source of concern to the Federal Government.

“The PTF has directed private laboratories to put in place measures to validate results and ensure that all passengers are registered on the travel portal before samples are processed to stop this activity,” Mustapha said.

The SGF also expressed concern of the PTF about the increasing daily numbers of infections, saying as of January 6, 2021, Nigeria recorded 1,664 infections.

He said, “This is yet another all-time high in Nigeria and we must all take full responsibility through compliance and vigilance. It is better to wear a face mask than being on a ventilator.”

The Director, Hospital Services, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Adebimpe Adebiyi, expressed optimism that Nigeria would benefit from the “first wave” of the COVAX vaccine allocation.

She also announced the commencement of government’s oxygen availability intervention plan.

She said, “The implementation of the oxygen availability intervention plan for all the states plus FCT as approved by the Federal Government has commenced.

“Facilities will be prioritised based on the severity of the gaps identified such as degree of need or the degree of unavailability oxygen determines the first beneficiaries of the intervention.

“Some countries have started rolling out vaccines and Nigeria is exploring all available options to acquire vaccines for our people. We are confident that Nigeria will benefit from the ‘first wave’ of the COVAX vaccine allocation.”
