Abia State government has offered N5 million reward to anyone who can volunteer useful information that could lead to the rescue of the kidnapped former Chief Medical Director of the State Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH, Aba, Prof. Uwadinachi Iweha.

Iweha, who was kidnapped on Sunday, 6th June 2022, at about 4 pm in front of his residence, at Umuajameze Ezeleke village, Umuopara in Umuahia South council area, is yet to be seen since the incident.

The situation has heightened fears about the safety of the popular medical doctor.

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, had last week, embarked on an indefinite strike over Iweha’s abduction. The doctors had said there was no way they would continue to provide maximum services since they are no longer safe and urged the State government and security apparatus to do all that is necessary to secure Iweha’s release.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Chris Ezem, the government said it is deploying all necessary measures and resources to ensure the release of the medical doctor.

“Government is offering a handsome reward of the sum of N5 million to anyone or group with useful information that will lead to the rescue of Prof. Iweha from his abductors and the arrest of the abductors. Government will continue to discharge its responsibility of securing the lives and properties of all residents of the state,” the statement read in part.

Assuring that security and welfare of the people remain paramount to the Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu administration, the government tasked residents to be security conscious and report any movements to the security agencies.

Church Attacks Are Politically-Motivated, Says President Buhari

Gunmen with explosives stormed a church in Owo in southwestern Ondo state on June 5, killing 40 worshippers and wounding at least 60 others, in a rare such attack in the usually safer region.

At the weekend, gunmen from a criminal gang kidnapped 36 people after attacking several villages and two churches in northwestern Kaduna state.

Three people were also killed in the attack, according to local officials.

Nigeria is struggling to end a 13-year jihadist insurgency in its northeast, while criminal gangs in the northwest raid villages and kidnap or kill residents despite army operations against them.

“From the tragedy in Owo two weeks ago that shook our nation to its core, to the killings and kidnappings just this weekend in Kaduna State, it is clear that there is a design by wicked people to put the country under religious stress,” Buhari was quoted as saying late Wednesday.

Although no group claimed responsibility for the attacks, Buhari said the assaults were politically motivated by “enemies” seeking to destroy the country’s unity.

“We will not let them. The nation will not be distracted or divided by these obviously planned and politically motivated criminal outrages,” he said.

Buhari, a northern Muslim steps down next year after two terms in office, and security will be a major challenge for whoever wins the February 2023 presidential election.

“The perpetrators are cowards; weak and wicked men with guns murdering, in cold blood, unarmed women and children at their places of worship,” Buhari said.

Religious and ethnic tensions often flare in hotspots in Nigeria, which has more than 250 ethnic groups and is almost equally divided between the mostly Christian south and predominantly Muslim north.

The government has said it suspected the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group was behind the Owo church attack.

ISWAP operates mostly in the northeast of the country, where it is part of the grinding jihadist conflict that has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced 2.2 million more.

8 Medical Staff To Be Tried For Diego Maradona’s Death

Following the death of legendary Argentinian footballer, Diego Maradona, not less than eight medical personnel have been put on trial for criminal negligence.

Recall that Maradona passed away after suffering a heart attack in Buenos Aires, aged 60 in November 2020.

Weeks before his demise, he was recovering at home from surgery on a brain blood clot. After his death, Argentine prosecutors launched an investigation into the doctors and nurses involved in his care.

A judge ordered a culpable homicide trial after a medical panel found Maradona’s treatment was rife with “deficiencies and irregularities”.

In 2021, the panel of 20 experts appointed to examine his death found Maradona’s medical team acted in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner”.

It also concluded that the footballer “would have had a better chance of survival” with adequate treatment in an appropriate medical facility, according to the court ruling.

Among the medical personnel facing charges are Maradona’s neurosurgeon and personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, a psychiatrist and psychologist, two doctors, two nurses, and their boss. They have all denied responsibility for his death. بوكر حقيقي

The legal proceedings were prompted by a complaint filed by two of Maradona’s daughters. They raised concerns about their father’s treatment after the brain operation.

Mario Baudry, a lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons, told Reuters that the football legend was “in a situation of helplessness” by the time of his death.

“As soon as I saw the cause, I said it was a homicide. موقع ٣٦٥ I fought for a long time and here we are, with this stage completed,” he said.

All eight medical personnel will be tried on a legal definition of homicide which is based on negligence committed in the knowledge that it may lead to a person’s death.

The Abuja-based preacher claimed in a previous sermon given in the church’s main hall that a man who avoids his obligations loses his male dominance and does not even deserve to wear trousers but should dress in skirts instead.

He continued by advising prospective couples not to wed those who are only in their lives for the sake of acquiring wealth, property, power, or influence.

According to him, men who wait for their wives to pay house rent, children’s school fees, and buy foodstuffs are no longer men.

He said,

”One of the worst things I have seen is when a man is waiting for his wife to pay house rent, waiting for a woman to pay children’s school fees, to buy food in the house.

You are no longer a man then. Pull your trouser and wear skirt. Wear dress, wear gown.

We Lost N4bn To Vandalism, Cable Theft In 6 Months, Says EKEDC

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has disclosed that it has lost about N4 billion of its assets and electrical installations to vandalism in the last six months.

This was made known by Tinuade Sanda, managing director of EKEDC at a press briefing on Wednesday in Lagos.

Sanda said the company faced more vandalism in Mushin and Ijora, leading to unaccounted problems.

She said the peril had made it difficult for the company to provide adequate electricity to its customers, also posing a serious threat to its distribution infrastructure, especially the electricity cables.

“Today, I want to bring to the attention of the public, the spate of vandalism within our network in the last few weeks, especially in areas such as Mushin, Yaba, Surulere, Ijora, Apapa, and Lagos Island,” Sanda said.

“These cases of vandalism have contributed in no small measure to the prolonged outages in our network, leading to disruptions of many businesses, maiming/injury, and loss of lives, particularly of innocent and unsuspecting members of the public.

“We have witnessed 18 incidents, and from our estimate, we have lost about N3 billion to the underground armoured cables that are being stolen and resold in the black market.

Sanda also said the electricity distribution company had not given any mandate to any company to carry out any form of excavation on any electrical or cable installations within its network.

According to her, EKEDC is engaging the ministry of power, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the Bureau of Public Enterprises over the claim by a company that it had a contract to decommission underground cables within its network.

“Eko Disco operations are carried out only by our authorized staff and operatives who can be easily identified with the EKEDC branded coveralls and jackets,” she added.

“I am, therefore, calling on our customers, security agencies, and most importantly the media, and the public to be vigilant and assist us in this fight against vandalism within our franchise area and put an end to these incessant acts of criminality.”

She, however, appealed to the public to report shady deals or any person(s) posing as staff of Eko Disco to the security agencies or contact the company through its various whistleblower channels.

“These challenges have adversely affected the supply of power to our customers,” she added.

“However, I would like to reiterate to our esteemed customers that we are actively engaging the other stakeholders in the industry to provide solutions to these problems.”

FG Asks Qualified Civil Servants To Apply For Role Of Accountant-General

The federal government has called on qualified civil servants to apply for the role of accountant general.

This is coming after Idris Ahmed, former accountant general of the federation was arrested by the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N80 billion fraud.

Idris was then suspended by Zainab Ahmed, minister for finance while the case was being investigated.

Recall that the federal government, however, approved the appointment of Anamekwe Nwabuoku to oversee the office.

In a circular dated June 21, 2022, Folasade Yemi-Esan, head of the civil service of the federation said the process of appointment of a substantive accountant general of the federation has commenced.

According to Yemi-Esan, the application was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The role is open to all directors and accountants in the mainstream who are not retiring before the end of 2024.

“Following the approval of Mr. President, the office of the head of the civil service of the federation is commencing the process of the appointment of a substantive accountant general of the federation from eligible directors (accountant) in the pool of accountant general of the federation,” the circular reads.

“Consequently, all accountants in the mainstream federal civil service in the pool of accountant general of the federation who have attained the position of substantive director (Salary Grade 17) on or before 1st January 2020 and [are] not retiring from the service earlier than 31st December 2024, are eligible to participate in the exercise.

“Officers undergoing disciplinary proceedings are however excluded from the exercise.”

The circular also directed eligible applicants to provide documents to guarantee the process of their application, adding that required documents be submitted on or before July 6, 2022.

“Permanent secretaries are therefore requested to forward the following to facilitate the process; list of eligible directors on SGL 17, confidential and personal files of all eligible directors, five copies of curriculum vital of each of the eligible directors, brief on each of the eligible directors in the attached format to be produced in Microsoft Word and in both hard (5 copies) and soft copies. Soft copies are to be sent via email to [email protected] and also in a flash drive,” the circular further reads.

“The documents above must reach the office of the permanent secretary, career management office (CMO), office of the head of the civil service of the federation, Block A, 4th Floor. federal secretariat complex, phase II on or before 4:00 pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.”

Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president, and his wife, Beatrice, have been arrested and charged for bringing a child to the UK for organ harvesting.

Confirming the arrests in a statement, the metropolitan police said the pair were charged to court on Thursday following an investigation by the force’s specialist crime team.

The police added that the investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

“Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting,” the statement reads.

“Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

“They have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later today.”

“A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support.

“As criminal proceedings are now under way we will not be providing further details.”

Chinese leader Xi Jinping set the tone for a virtual summit with leaders from major emerging economies in a pointed speech Wednesday evening, in which he decried sanctions as “weaponizing” the global economy and urged unity in the face of financial challenges.

Xi, who spoke at a business forum ahead of the virtual summit Thursday with leaders from the BRICS economic bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, portrayed the world as being at a critical juncture as it struggled to recover from the pandemic amid what he termed new “security challenges.”
“The tragedies of the past tell us that hegemony, group politics and bloc confrontation bring no peace or security; they only lead to wars and conflicts,” he said via videolink.
“The Ukraine crisis is another wake-up call for all in the world. It reminds us that blind faith in the so-called ‘position of strength’ and attempts to expand military alliances and seek one’s own security at the expense of others will only land oneself in a security dilemma,” Xi said.
The comments appeared to be a veiled reference to the United States and NATO, whom Beijing has repeatedly blamed for provoking Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
He also took aim at Western sanctions, saying such penalties were a “double-edged sword” that weaponized the global economy and would “bring harm to the people of the world.”
Instead countries should “embrace solidarity and coordination,” he said, while also touting China’s new development and security initiatives as blueprints.
The comments provide insight into China’s priorities as its hosts the annual BRICS summit — a virtual event in Beijing that is also Russian President Vladimir Putin’s first time meeting in a forum with the leaders of major global economies since the invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.
In his own video address at Wednesday’s event, Putin said Russia was “redirecting” its trade flows to BRICS countries and other “reliable international partners,” according to a Kremlin transcript.
He also pushed back on Western economic actions, saying “politically motivated sanctions” and “mechanisms of exerting pressure on competitors” undermined global business and were “contrary to common sense and basic economic logic.”
Sanctions have been a key tool used by Western governments and their allies against Russia following its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, as they seek to pressure it into giving up its brutal assault, which has sparked a humanitarian crisis and allegations of war crimes against Ukrainian civilians.
The war in Ukraine is expected to cast a shadow over the summit, the fourteenth since the bloc was established in 2009 as a means to “serve common interests of emerging market economies and developing countries.”
But the crisis — and the raft of Western sanctions — may also provide impetus for certain issues that have been under discussion by the group for years, including promoting trade settlements outside the US-dollar system, from which Russian institutions are now heavily restricted.
Putin raised this possibility in his Wednesday remarks, saying that BRICS partners were “developing reliable alternative mechanisms for international settlements” and “exploring the possibility of creating an international reserve currency based on the basket of BRICS currencies.”
But how wholeheartedly the entire bloc will embrace major initiatives like a shift from the dollar system or sweeping statements decrying Western sanctions at Thursday’s summit remains to be seen.
While each of the BRICS leaders has avoided condemning Russia outright, they hold varying levels of interest in not being seen to endorse its actions or work too closely with Russia — and run foul of Western friends.
Differences of tone were apparent in the addresses by each of the leaders at Wednesday night’s forum, an event for business leaders on the sidelines of the summit.
In his video address, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on the forum itself and his hopes for it to spark exchanges between start-ups. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa focused on poverty, inequality and issues like vaccine access, as well as trade and investment, according to transcripts from their governments.
Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro said in the face of global economic risks, his country was open to further economic integration, according to Brazil’s national public news agency.
