Police Arrest, Detain Two Journalists In Kwara

The Osun State Police Command has debunked reports that Isaac Fayose, younger brother to ex-Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, was attacked by suspected kidnappers at the Gbongan Area of the state.

The command made its position known in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, on Tuesday.

It said the report being circulated on social media was untrue as Fayose June had given them the account of what happened.

Opalola said: “It has come to the knowledge of the command the circulation of a report on social media indicating that Isaac Fayose narrowly escaped death by the whiskers from gunmen attacks along Ife-Ibadan highway on Monday.

“The command hereby wishes to inform all members of the public that no such incident was reported in any part of the state.

“Members of the public are hereby enjoined to report any complaints or incidences to the nearest police station, not on social media.”

The spokesperson said that the command had contacted Isaac Fayose and he narrated what really happened.

Opalola added: “Mr. Fayose stated that while he was on transit from Ekiti to Lagos State, at a point after Asejire Dam, towards Ibadan, he saw some travelers making u-turn for fear of being attacked by presumed armed robbers.

“And in his own attempt to make a u-turn also, he had a minor accident.

“He stated further that, he did not see the purported kidnappers, neither was anyone injured nor abducted from the scene.”

Opalola said that the Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, has urged members of the public to always verify the authenticity of whatever information they receive via social media before circulating it.

She further advised residents to ensure that they make proper reports of any incident to the nearest police station in the state.

“Police in Osun, under the leadership of Olokode will not relent in their efforts to ensure that the citizens of the state and travelers are safe and their property secured,” she said.

Over 40 political bigwigs, who joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party with former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shakarau, have resolved to remain in it.

They have also reiterated their loyalty to the party and pledged to work toward its victory in the 2023 General Elections.

The NNPP bigwigs announced their stand in a communique issued at the end of their meeting, which was read by Haruna Isa-Dederi, on Tuesday in Kano.

Isa-Dederi, the member representing Karaye/Rogo Federal Constituency, said that they resolved to remain in the party to exercise their civic rights as enshrined in the constitution.

He said: “We jointly and individually remained members of the Kano NNPP, with an unshaken loyalty and determination to carry the party to success in the forthcoming general elections.

“We shall continue to make sacrifices to our great party to further strengthen its support base.

“We urge all our supporters to equally continue to cooperate with us so that we can be able to take the party to victory.

“We joined the NNPP because of the conviction about the party’s manifesto and principles.

“It is determined to address the problems facing the country if given the mandate.”

He, therefore, urged their supporters to remain calm and be law-abiding, assuring that they would never let them down politically.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the NNPP governorship candidate, Alhaji Abba Kabir-Yusuf; deputy governorship candidate, Alhaji Aminu Abdulsalam; and Kano South Senatorial District candidate, Alhaji Abdulrahman Kawu-Sumaila, were among those who attended the meeting.

Others were the member representing Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure Federal Constituency, Kabiru Alhassan-Rurum; former Chief of Staff to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Alhaji Ali Haruna-Makoda; and ex-Commissioner of Budget and Planning, Alhaji Nura Muhammad-Dankadai, among others.

NAN also recalls that Shekarau was received into the fold of the PDP at a ceremony on Monday in Kano.

I Am Considering A Government Of National Unity – Atiku Abubakar

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said he is considering a government of national unity and tax rebate if elected president in 2023.

The former vice disclosed this in a statement he personally issued on Tuesday in Kano and made available to newsmen in Abuja.

Abubakar said he was considering a government of national unity that would douse the temperature, unite Nigerians and pave the way for improved security.

“Improved security allows for investments and, therefore, an improved economy, also targeted tax rebates to attract foreign and local investments, amongst other proactive measures to attract investments to grow the economy,” Abubakar said.

The PDP candidate also said that Nigeria needed to bake a bigger cake and not bigger debts.

He recalled that last week the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released the GDP figures for the second quarter of 2022.

He said that though a growth rate of 3.4 percent was reported, the plain truth was that economy and the citizens were still facing challenges.

“The reasons are obvious: first, the key sectors of the economy, notably agriculture, oil and gas (the country’s cash cow), and manufacturing (that contributes to jobs), are either growing slowly or declining.

“Second, unabated are rising commodity prices occasioned by high energy and transportation costs (and aggravated by the disorderliness in the foreign exchange market).

“Also, debt levels continue to rise while the fiscal capacity to service its debts is declining.”

Abubakar said that all of the above-raised questions about the reported gains from output growth.

He called on NBS to share with the public its recent statistics on poverty, unemployment, and commodity prices.

Abubakar expressed the view that going into more debt would be a recipe for macroeconomic instability in the country.

“As I have said before, increasing debts will never be a solution to our indebtedness.

“My government, if elected, will halt the rate of debt accumulation and instead focus on private-public partnerships in financing development.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission has set $0.10 as the new fixed International Termination Rate for voice services paid by overseas telecom carriers for ending international calls on local networks in Nigeria.

The ITR pertains to the cost of bringing call traffic into Nigeria, and it was increased from the $0.045 initially presented in December last year as a floor price.

The Commission said the new rate, which would take effect September 1, 2022, was the fixed rate for ITR services.

It added that international operators were mandated to pay local operations in dollars.

This is according to a document on the Determination of Mobile (Voice) International Termination Rate (As Amended) as of August 25, 2022, which is available on the NCC website.

On the reason for backtracking on the floor price to a fixed price, the NCC noted, “While the Determination had set a floor price at $0.045 and gives the MNOs room to negotiate on commercial terms with carriers, there were related indications that MNOs took advantage of this latitude to engage in discriminatory pricing that favors their related international carrier partners to the detriment of the Nigerian transit/IDA operators.

“To check the incidence of such anti-competitive disposition, it was agreed by all parties at the meetings that a fixed rate should be adopted by the Commission, in place of the floor rate which had provided a platform for negotiations with various carriers at a rate above the floor.

“It was further agreed that the present Determination should be amended to include this new fixed rate.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has outlined steps the government must take to end its six-month-long academic strike.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the government must exhibit transparency.

“Government should tell us and Nigerians – the money that has been alleged to have been approved for revitalisation – how much is it and where is it lodged? When will it be released?” Prof Osodeke said.

The university don added that the government must clearly state its position on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), a payroll system which ASUU wants as a replacement for the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS). مواقع روليت

“Three, have they accepted the agreement we reached with their panel? They should come and tell us this, and not go to the press,” Prof. Osodeke said.

“Strike is a symptom of a problem,” Prof Osodeke said. “Any day you sort out that problem, you will not have strike.”

ASUU has been on strike since February 14.

On Monday, the union declared a “total and indefinite” extension of its industrial action, noting that the government has failed to satisfactorily meet its demands.

The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities, and academic autonomy among other demands.

One bone of contention for academics is the non-payment of university revitalisation funds, which amounts to about N1.1 trillion.

Former Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO of Rivers State Police Command, SP Nnamdi Omoni is dead, ABN TV reports.

SP Omoni died on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital and the cause of his death is still unknown.

He had celebrated his birthday last Friday in Port Harcourt.

Before his death, Omoni was the Divisional Police Officer for Elimgbu police station in Obio Akpor local government area.

He took up the position after his was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police.

The Rivers State Police command was, however, yet to issue a statement on the latest incident.

The federal government yesterday said it would clamp down on vandals and oil thieves sabotaging the economy.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said President Muhammadu Buhari had given the resources and the marching order to take the war to them.

He spoke yesterday at the commissioning of eight gunboats acquired by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“Those who steal crude oil not only deny the country of the much-needed revenue, they sell the stolen goods at discounted prices, well below the market value.

“This black market creates a glut and forces down the official price.

“They’ve therefore made Nigeria to suffer the double jeopardy of loss in revenue and drop in value of the product.”

He said the government was taking adequate steps to equip relevant security agencies and by extension, the NSCDC, which is the lead agency in the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure.

Commandant-General, NSCDC, Abubakar Audi, assured of the Corps’ commitment to the war against oil theft and illegal oil bunkering, and would make judicious use of this equipment to take the war “to the doorstep of these economic brigands and saboteurs.”

APGA Raised Alarm Over Plot To Arrest Ebonyi Candidates

The All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), in Abia State, has gotten a new chairman of the party, ABN TV Reports.

He is Prince Nnanna Ukaegbu. The renowned politician has taken over the secretariat of the party in the state.

Ukaegbu took over the secretariat following the April 7,2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Owerri Division which confirmed him as the authentic chairman of the party in the state.

APGA had filed a motion asking the court to dismiss the judgment. But the court,on July 19 2022, dismissed the suit and awarded N200,000 cost against the party.

Heavily armed policemen had yesterday taken over the area before Ukaegbu arrived the secretariat with over 15 members of the state executive council of the party.

The party executives later went into a meeting.

Ukaegbu told our reporter that his take over of the party secretariat followed the judgement of Owerri Appeal Court which confirmed him as the state Chairman of the party.

The party boss said he is on a rescue mission to retake APGA and return it to the vision of the founding fathers.

He further disclosed that founding members of the party have been calling on him to return to rescue APGA from those they described as political merchants.

‘He said; “We just took over the party secretariat. The party will sit down, review some issues. We just met for an hour and took some important decisions. I have the backing of 22 out of the 26 members of the State Executive members.”

Ukaegbu also disclosed that the state executive committee have suspended four members of the party including the former state chairman, Rev.Augustine Ehiemere; former state secretary, Sunday Onukwubiri; former state legal adviser, Chukwuemeka Nwokoro,and one other official ,over alleged embezzlement of N56m belonging to the party and sundry offences which contravened the APGA constitution.

He explained that Ehiemere has been sitting on the petition from APGA members over the alleged embezzlement.

On his alleged pact with the PDP, Ukaegbu dismissed the allegation as unfounded, stressing that the former chairman, Ehiemere, rather used the party as a tool of merchandize.

However, the former chairman, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, insisted that Ukaegbu’s tenure had expired in 2014.
