Despite Causing Death of 60 Persons, We’ll Give Nnamdi Kanu Fair Trial — FG

0

The Federal Government, on Thursday, said the arrested leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, caused the death of 60 persons in four months, but assured that he will get fair treatment and trial.

Nnamdi Kanu facing an 11-count charge bordering on treasonable felony, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms, pending before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave government’s position at a media briefing in Abuja.

Like his Justice counterpart, Abubakar Malami, SAN,who unveiled Kanu’s arrest and repatriation on Tuesday, Mohammed declined to say how and where the IPOB leader was arrested and brought to Nigeria.

The government equally listed the alleged sins of Kanu in a letter to the international community, alleging that the IPOB leader orchestrated the killing of 60 persons and destruction of property in 55 violent attacks across the South-East and South-South zones within four months.

The FG stated this in a letter dated April 26, 2021 to western diplomats, NAN reports.

In the letter, it listed the alleged atrocities committed by members of IPOB on the instruction of Kanu who was then in exile.

One of the attachments to the letter listed the attacks on lives and property by IPOB and its militia arm, Eastern Security Network, ESN, in some parts of the country between January and April 2021.

According to the letter from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to some western countries, the Federal Government objected to a statement by an agency of a western nation whose government had noted that ESN was created to combat insecurity.

The Federal Government, in its letter, considered the statement as “justifying the establishment of a militia by a non-state actor and glossing over the destructive and violent acts of IPOB and the ESN.

”In under four months this year, IPOB has carried out over fifty-five violent acts in various parts of South-East Nigeria killing scores of people and destroying many properties.

“Indeed, it would seem that the position of the (western nation) seems to have further emboldened Nnamdi Kanu, the self-confessed leader of IPOB.

”As recently as 22nd April, 2021, broadcasting online from his base in London, Mr Kanu issued a series of instructions to his militia and other members of the outlawed organisation, on acts of violence to be carried out within the territory of Nigeria.”

The letter made copious references to some of the threats issued by Kanu thus: “Our madness has just begun.

“Every night, young men will not sleep, you will come out, at the starting of every road that leads to every populated area under human habitation to make sure that appropriate road blocks are put in place to slow them down so we can catch them (Fulanis) and kill them.

“That is what we want you to do. Obiano (Governor of Anambra State) from today onwards, anywhere you are seen in public you will be attacked …. Obiano, … you are a dead man walking.

“Any landlord that gives accommodation or rents his house or her house to a Fulani person, to an army personnel, to somebody who works for the police or Department of State Services (DSS).Kill them.

“If you see the army and the police in your place, kill all of them… Kill them.

“From today, I am announcing, there will be no election in Anambra State. Every edifice of election in Anambra State will be destroyed. I am warning you in advance. There will be no election. There will be no campaign in Anambra State.

“Any vehicle you see, from tonight (22nd April 2021), 12 midnight to 5, destroy it completely. That is the time they (referring to Fulanis) move about abducting people. And we keep quiet.

“What stops you young people from, once you see them coming around 4am in the morning, you will block all every exits, set it on fire?

“They will exhaust all the ammunition that they have, then we capture them alive and cut off their heads. All of them. Decapitate them,” the Federal Government further quoted Kanu’s alleged instructions to IPOB members.

The Federal Government noted that IPOB members, following these instructions, intensified their attacks on the specified targets.

According to the Federal Government, Kanu issued instructions from western capitals using Radio Biafra and IPOB members to carry them out in Nigeria.

“For example, a day after Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State confirmed to newsmen that Nnamdi Kanu has ordered members of the group to kill him and other South-East governors, which orders were repeated on Radio Biafra, the private residence of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, in his hometown in Omuma, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, was attacked and set ablaze and two of the security men attached to the house were killed.”

Kenyan Government Denies Involvement In Nnamdi Kanu’s Arrest, Deportation

0

The Kenyan government has dismissed claims that it played a major role in the capture of the leader IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kenyan authorities were linked to the arrest and eventual extradition of separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu back to Nigeria, saying it could not ascertain whether the act took place in Kenya.

Kenya’s denial deepens a diplomatic crisis, given that Nigerian authorities had indicated they seized the activist in London before extraditing him to Nigeria, a claim the British government has since denied. Mr Kanu’s family roped Kenya into the conflict when it sensationally claimed that the secessionist leader had been arrested in Kenya from where he was extradited to Nigeria.

Yesterday, the Director General of Immigration Services Alexander Muteshi dismissed the claims of Kenya’s complicity, arguing that it was not possible to tell whether Mr Kanu had entered Kenyan territory.

“I can’t know that,” Mr Muteshi disclosed when asked whether the claims made by the family were true.

“He was unlawfully arrested in Kenya, detained and subsequently subjected to extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria where he is now detained,” the family said, through Mr Kingsley Kanu, his brother.

Mr Kanu was arrested last Sunday by what sources say was a combined operation of Nigerian and foreign security officers. But the exact location of his arrest remains contentious.

The family’s claims, if true, casts Kenya once again in the eye of international focus so soon after similar claims were made over the abduction and eventual deportation of Selahaddin Gülen to Turkey. He is the nephew of US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of organising a coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016.

Kenya has a negative history of alleged complicity in similar incidents of abduction and deportation of asylum seekers that have taken place previously.

In their statement, the family claimed that Mr Kanu was on a visit to Kenya when he was arrested, detained and handed over to the Nigerian authorities who then flew him to Nigeria.

“My brother has been subjected to extraordinary rendition by Kenya and Nigeria. They two governments have violated the most basic principles of the rule of law,” Mr Kingsley said in remarks widely quoted in the Nigerian media.”Extraordinary rendition is one of the most serious crimes states can commit. Both Nigeria and Kenya must be held to account. I demand justice for my brother, Nnamdi Kanu.”

Mr Kanu is accused of engaging in subversive activities that include inciting violence through television, radio and online broadcasts against Nigeria and Nigerian State and institutions.

Kanu was also accused of instigating violence especially in the Southeastern Nigeria that resulted in the loss of lives and property of civilians, military, paramilitary, police forces and destruction of civil institutions and symbols of authority.

I Was Very Happy When Nnamdi Kanu Was Arrested After Calling His Own Country Zoo — El-Rufai

0

Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has said he was very happy upon hearing that the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was arrested, wondering why he would call his own country a ‘zoo’.

According to el-Rufai, “I was very happy (when Nnamdi Kanu was arrested) because, first he jumped bail, jeopardising his sureties.

“Secondly, a person that challenges the sovereignty and the authority of a state and incites violence; he refers to his own country as a zoo.

“This should be a message to all these separatists challenging the authority of the Nigerian State to be very careful.”

The Governor spoke on Friday morning in an interview on BBC Pidgin.

He also stated that Boko Haram terrorists and bandits are different from the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, because they don’t have a recognised and centralised leadership.

He said Kanu is a visible and central leader, based abroad and calling for the dissolution of the country.

This was in response to a question bordering on why the bandits and terrorists in the North are not being treated with the same swiftness agitators in the southern parts are dealt.

Asked about handling Boko Haram and bandits with the same swiftness, he said: “No! No! No! No! People are comparing apples to oranges.

“Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of IPOB, a proscribed organisation. He is identifiable, in constant communication and everyone knows where he is.

“Let’s take Boko Haram for instance. Shekau was in hiding and for the past 10 years and the military had been waging a war to get him.

“It is not like Shekau was in Saudi Arabia, sitting in one place, tweeting about the break up of Nigeria or asking Boko Haram to go and kill Helen and Nasir el-Rufai.

“Nnamdi Kanu is in one place while Shekau is waging guerrilla warfare. The insurgency is still going on and the Federal Government is not giving up.

“Regarding bandits, they are not centralised under one leadership. Who is the head of the bandits? Who is the equivanlent of Nmandi Kanu with banditry?

“Bandits are just collections of independent criminals. It is a business for them. It is not a case of Nigeria must break up.

“I want to challenge anyone to tell me the central leader of bandits in the same position as Kanu.”

Those Of You Hailing Igboho Should Tell Him To Show Up Now, Says DSS After Detaining Nnamdi Kanu

Few days after Nnamdi Kanu was detained at its facility, the Department of State Services (DSS) has called on Sunday Adeyemo ‘Igboho’ to turn himself to security agencies as the agency confirmed it has launched a manhunt for the Yoruba nation agitation.

DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya said this in a press briefing on Thursday evening in Abuja while confirming a raid on Igboho’s house in Ibadan, Oyo State by the security agency.

“Consequently, ADEYEMO/IGBOHO is advised to turn himself in to the nearest security agency,” Afunanya said during the briefing in which he noted that the agency captured thirteen of Igboho’s men.

“Those cheering and eulogising him may appeal to or advise him to do the needful. He should surrender himself to the appropriate authorities. He or anyone can never be above the law. Meanwhile, those arrested will be charged accordingly.”

He said that the DSS recovered a cache of illegal arms — including seven AK-47 rifles — from Igboho’s house during the raid carried out on Thursday morning.

Afunanya narrated that when the security operatives approached the house, they were attacked by nine of Igboho’s boys who engaged them in a gun duel but were subsequently overpowered.

The DSS official explained that two of Igboho’s men were killed while an operative sustained injuries. He, however, said Igboho escaped during the gun battle and is currently on the run.

Why British Govt Can’t Get Nnamdi Kanu Out Of Detention Or Prison

0

The British Government cannot get embattled IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu out of detention or Prison.

It will be recalled that Kanu is also a citizen of the United Kingdom. ABN TV reported on Wednesday that Kanu was arrested by Nigerian authorities in an east African country and immediately extradited to Nigeria.

He was arraigned in court on Tuesday and remanded in DSS custody until July 26th.

When asked to speak on the situation and give clarification on the “Consular Assistance” that can be given to Kanu, Dan Hurlock, a spokesperson for the British High Commission in Abuja, referenced a manual titled “Support for British nationals abroad: A guide”.

The book details guidelines on British Government support to nationals in other countries. The book states;

“We can offer you information about the local prison or remand system, including visiting arrangements, mail and censorship, privileges, work possibilities, and social and welfare services. We can also explain where there are different regulations for remand prisoners and sentenced prisoners. For example, in some countries, prisoners are allowed to send more mail when they are on remand.”

“We cannot get you out of prison or detention, nor can we get special treatment for you because you are British. If however you are not treated in line with internationally accepted standards we will consider approaching local authorities. This may include if your trial does not follow internationally recognised standards for a fair trial or is unreasonably delayed compared to local cases.”

“With your permission, we can consider taking up a complaint about ill-treatment, personal safety, or discrimination with the police or prison authorities.”

“Consular staff will keep in regular contact with you, either by visiting personally or by telephone/ letter. The frequency of visits will depend on local prison conditions and your personal circumstances.”

“If you are a dual British national in the country of your other nationality (for example, a dual Nigerian-British national in Nigeria), we would NOT normally offer you support or get involved in dealings between you and the authorities of that state. We may make an exception to this rule if, having looked at the circumstances of the case, we consider that you are vulnerable and we have humanitarian concerns.”

“We would not normally attend a court case involving a British national, and we cannot influence the outcome of any trial,”, the document revealed.

State Of Nnamdi Kanu’s Health Uncertain, Lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor Decries

0

Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu has stated that he can’t verify the health status of the pro-secessionist leader.

In a statement on Thursday, Ejiofor disclosed that the Department of State Security, DSS is yet to respond or approve his application to meet with Kanu.

“Only yesterday, and in line with the protocols of the State Security Services, we applied for an audience with our Client-Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and very surprisingly, the SSS is yet to approve Our request. This is despite the fact that he was abducted in a foreign land and consequently marshalled before the Federal High Court No 2 Abuja, in a suspicious circumstance, and without my Knowledge as the substantive Counsel in the Matter.”

“This drama took place in Nigeria Court, in gross violation of his Constitutional rights to Fair Hearing and If at the close of work today, nothing is heard from Department of State Security Services, we will be returning back to Court for the needful. DSS custody shouldn’t be the appropriate custody to keep Our Client, because they are hostile not only to we lawyers but his relatives too.”

“As it stands today, we can not verify the health status of our Client Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has hitherto been on daily medication. It is most plausible, that following restriction placed on visiting him, he may have been subjected to all forms of inhuman treatments ranging from torture, rough handling, and threats, all targeted at extracting confessional statement from him.”

“The World is hereby placed on notice that if anything happens to our Client-Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is presumably being subjected to these inhuman treatments the Nigeria Government will be held responsible. Our Client is inherently and Constitutionally presumed innocent of all allegations against him, particularly now the Government has submitted to judicial process. We still apply for calm from all corners as we expedite legal action.”

Manchester United have announced that they have reached an agreement for a fee in principle of £73m with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho.

Sancho, 21, is expected to sign a five-year contract with the option of a sixth.

He will finalise terms and complete a medical after his Euro 2020 campaign.

The statement read:” Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of Jadon Sancho.

“The signing is subject to contractual terms and a medical, which will be completed after Jadon’s involvement in the UEFA European Championship.”

The fee, payable over five equal instalments, will see Sancho become the second most expensive English player of all time behind Harry Maguire who joined Man United from Leicester for £80m in 2019.

Manchester City are due 15% of the profit Dortmund will make on Sancho, who joined the Bundesliga club from the Blues for £10m four years ago. That equates to about £9.5m.

Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified four key positions he wants to improve as they look to build on their progress last season.

After steering his side to second in the Premier League and the Europa League final, the Norwegian is looking to strengthen the right side of his midfield, then the central defensive, midfield and attacking areas.

The deal brings to an end a long chase for the Londoner. Man United expected to sign him last summer but could not agree a fee.

Sancho scored 50 goals and registered 57 assists in 137 appearances for Dortmund, scoring twice in the German Cup final to help the Bundesliga side to a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in May.

He has won 20 caps for England since making his international debut in 2018, scoring three goals, and was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
