Some chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State have been abducted in an attack along Kaduna-Kachia highway in Kaduna State.

Daily Trust gathered that the attacked happened at a place called Tashar Icce, which is some meters from Kujama community in Kajuru Area of the state.

The team was on its way back from Kafanchan after a political meeting with Christian leaders in Southern Senatorial District, on Thursday.

A politician, who escaped the attack, described the incident as terrible, saying about five vehicles were affected. He said the bandits opened fire sporadically.

He also said some of thee people in the entourage sustained gun injuries while two persons were abducted.

Daily Trust gathered the governorship candidate, Senator Uba Sani, was not part of the team that was attacked as he had travelled to Abuja from Kafanchan.

His Campaign DG, Sani Maina, Ahmed Maiyaki, a Chieftain of the party, and a few others escaped unhurt.

Among those abducted are the APC House of Assembly Candidate in Kajuru simply identified as Mr Madaki and the Vice chairman of APC in Kajuru Local Government Area, Ruben Waziri.

Ben Maigari, a relative of the Vice Chairman, confirmed the incident and said they were yet to be contacted by the bandits.

“They were attacked; the bandits blocked the road and opened fire on the entourage and other moving vehicles. My brother, Ruben, was abducted alongside Madaki because they were in the same vehicle,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday expressed delight that investments in improving security are yielding good dividends, lauding the Nigeria military for making significant progress in the fight against insecurity and building the momentum in reducing challenges to its barest minimum.

Speaking at the Nigeria International Economic Partnership Forum held on the margins of the 77th UN General Assembly in New York, the President pledged that the Federal Government would do more to improve security, recognising that the sector is another critical element in the flow of investment, and overall economic and infrastructural development.

”We will continue to give all necessary support to our security outfits to ensure that they are able to tackle the challenge headlong”, he said, stressing that ”the advantages and disadvantages of investing in Nigeria far outweigh the challenges.”

President Buhari also declared that in spite of the global crisis fuelled by the Ukraine-Russian war, the lingering COVID-19 pandemic and insurgency in some parts of the country, Nigeria is on course to taking her rightful place in the global economy.

He attributed the country’s success story to the implementation of reforms aimed at attracting foreign investments and sustained improvement in governance.

He noted that the quarterly GDP growth in Q1 2022 has been mostly driven by the non-oil sector, giving credence to the revenue source diversification agenda of government.

The President, however, acknowledged that more still needs to be done to improve private capital flows into Nigeria through Foreign Direct Investment and financing for infrastructure, affirming that the administration is leveraging the Integrated National Financing Strategy to address this.

On growth driven by the non-oil sector, the President said:”The agricultural sector, our most important, has remained resilient in spite of security concerns, low irrigation, limited inputs, and legacy infrastructure challenges, with strong food demand bolstering growth. Growth in manufacturing reflected stronger household and business consumption on account of the reopening of economic activities and improvement in supply chains.

”The present growth in our service sector is promising. Further privatization, foreign investment, globalization and competition will serve to stimulate growth and competition in the service sector and the economy as a whole.

”On the domestic front, the Federal Government is taking some bold, decisive and urgent action to address revenue underperformance, and improve our operations to make investment in Nigeria very attractive.

”Overall, the Nigerian economy is ripe for increased investment. But on the contrary, private capital flows into Nigeria, consisting mainly of Foreign Direct Investment, have slowed, hindering the financing of much-needed infrastructure and natural resource access projects. Our Administration is already working on innovative ways to restore these flows.”

The President who was represented at the opening session by the Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, told the international economic forum attended by Akinwumi Adesina, President of African Development Bank, and Florie Liser of the Corporate Council on Africa, among others that a key strategy being adopted to improve infrastructure financing is the Integrated National Financing Strategy.

He explained that the strategy seeks to identify ways to expand the financing envelope of the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria, enhance the sustainable development impact of financing by seeking to integrate and align public and private financial policies, regulatory frameworks, instruments, and business processes with sustainable development.

He added that the private sector would play a significant role in the strategy.

The President also mentioned other efforts by his administration to improve the nation’s economic and development outlook, such as Nigeria’s National Development Plan (2021 – 2025) and the Presidential Power Initiative.

On Nigeria’s National Development Plan, the President stated that it was formulated against the backdrop of several subsisting development challenges in the country and the need to tackle them within the framework of medium and long-term plans.

”This all-encompassing plan, aims to generate 21 million full-time jobs and lift 35 million people out of poverty by 2025, thus setting the stage for achieving the government’s commitment of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

”To attain the objectives of the National Development Plan (2021 – 2025), we estimate that we would require an investment commitment of about N348 trillion. Government capital expenditure during the period will be N49.7 trillion (14.3 percent) while the balance of N298.3 trillion (85.7 percent) is expected from the Private Sector.

”Of the 14.3 percent government contribution, FGN capital expenditure will be N29.6 trillion (8.5 percent) while the Sub-National Governments’ capital expenditure is estimated to be about N20.1 trillion (5.8 percent).

”The successful implementation of this Plan will, therefore, be heavily dependent on strong partnerships between the private and public sector, both within and with Development Partners outside Nigeria.”

Regarding the power sector, President Buhari noted that his administration has recognized it as a major catalyst for Nigeria’s industrialization, adding that in July, 2021, the 614-kilometre Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline project was launched to enhance energy security.

”Our Administration also provided the sovereign guarantee for this vital infrastructure project. When completed, this project will drive industrialization across the country.

”Furthermore, the first phase of the Presidential Power Initiative will provide over 40 million people with more reliable electricity supply, create 11,000 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians.

”This will be from power system engineers to electricians and contractors, and this will in turn improve the standard of living while providing homes and businesses with constant, reliable, and affordable electricity supply. ”

The President recalled that at the commencement of his Administration, N200 billion was paid for stranded power to service existing liabilities:

”Contract terms in Power Purchase Agreements were changed from ‘Take or Pay’ to ‘Take and Pay.’ Similarly, the Distribution Companies were made to use banks for bill collections – prior to this, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) was getting only 50% of proceeds. Now, TCN is financially viable and can invest in its own infrastructure.”

Wishing the forum very successful deliberations, President Buhari assured them that the Federal Government of Nigeria is very keen to consider the outcome of the deliberations and recommendations to elevate the Nigeria project to its rightful place of magnitude.

2023: Tinubu Meets Wike, Other PDP Govs In London

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has claimed the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, offered him a senatorial ticket when they met in London, United Kingdom.

Wike revealed this during a media chat on Friday morning.

The governor arranged the chat in a bid to address the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to Wike, he contested the presidential primaries because he wanted to be the candidate, so he didn’t buy a senatorial form.

“I didn’t contest so I can become a vice presidential candidate.

“I am not like others who were not serious and bought senatorial form alongside presidential form, and that’s why when Tinubu offered me senate slot, I didn’t go for it.”

Consumers Traders Kick Against Plan To Ban Ponmo

Some Nigerians have kicked against the proposed plan by the Federal Government to ban the consumption of cooked cow skin, popularly known as ponmo.

Recall that the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology, Zaria, Prof. Muhammad Yakubu, recently said the institute and other stakeholders would be approaching the National Assembly and state governments to establish a legislation to ban the consumption of the cow skin.

According to him, the decision is aimed at reviving the moribund tanneries and leather industry in the country.

He said it had no nutritional value and should be proscribed to save the industry and boost the nation’s economy.

However, some consumers, traders and experts who spoke to our correspondent in separate interviews, said banning ponmo would further increase economic hardship on the poor masses.

A consumer, Rukayat Ishola said she was substituting beef and fish with ponmo as a result of the high cost of the protein.

She said, “Personally, I like ponmo. It’s something many of us eat now since meat and fish are costly. It’s also good for elderly people. If you have N200, you will buy ponmo which can serve five people whereas the least you can get is beef that will be N1,000 and it’s just five pieces or less.

“If the government decides to ban it, they want to inflict hunger on the people because the person that does not have money for meat will buy ponmo. I buy in large quantities, fry and keep it for cooking later, and sometimes, my children take it to school.

Another consumer based in Ibadan, Titilayo Oyinlola, also said, “I will advise them not to ban it because a lot of us can’t do without eating it, not only because we enjoy it but because it saves money.

“For example, I came to this market to buy things, my initial plan was to buy N2,000 fish, but when I saw the size of fish they offered me, I had to change my mind. So, I decided to buy two Titus fish at N700 each then and one ponmo at N300, making a total of N1,700. My brother, things are tough and one needs to work with budget.”

A caterer and Chief Executive Officer of Bimras Catering Services, Rasaq Balikis, said when planning for events, it was advisable to mix ponmo with meat or fish in order to save cost.

“Most occasions, if you don’t garnish vegetables with ponmo and dried fish, people don’t like it. People want to feel a different taste when eating vegetables and this is what ponmo and dried fish does.

“It also helps with cost reduction when planning for events because instead of serving two meats, you can serve one ponmo, one meat or fish.

“Assuming you are having a party and you bought a meat of N100,000, if you realise that it’s not enough, you can buy one bag of ponmo which is around 60 pieces to substitute it and it will be okay. So, banning it will affect Nigerians a lot,” she added.

Another caterer, Fatimah Sulaiman, stressed that eating cow skin was mostly required by the elderly people, adding that medical doctors would always recommend it for the elderly people who were at risk of eating beef.

She maintained that such banning would leave such people with no alternative.

On his part, Kabiru Agbon, a cow skin trader, said banning the consumption of ponmo would mean taking away his livelihood.

“Ponmo, as far as I know, is for eating; there is the white one they call bokoto. Why will the government want to ban this now? Don’t you know banning it is an attempt to cause problems and taking away the source of income of many of us? It’s just not possible.”

In the same vein, the Chairman, Butcher and Meat Sellers Association, Bola Ige International Market, Ibadan, Ishola Olalekan, stated that any attempt to ban the consumption of cow skin would not only affect the consumers, but also take away jobs from some Nigerians.

“In olden days, cow skin was mainly used by our fathers for praying mats and some other leather forms. No one ate it before but when civilization set in, people began to process it for consumption. Now that lots of Nigerians are eating it and it has become a daily job for many, banning it will have an effect on a lot of people.

“There are people that depend on the processing and another set in charge of the sales before you now talk about those consuming it. What will they be doing after the ban,” Olalekan queried.

An expert and dietician at Diadem Nutrition and Dietic Consult, Queen Orji, said banning ponmo to revitalise the leather industry is not justifiable, stressing that though it did not contain protein, it served many Nigerians as food.

According to her, the ban of the food item, which is used by people from the eastern and western part of the country, is an attempt to deny the majority of poor people the opportunity of having the cheap cow skin.

“Ponmo is cheap and affordable, and for many, eating it with food is more like they have taken beef. Though it doesn’t add any protein or fat to the consumers, people enjoy it. I’m sure if they ban it, many people will not be happy,” Orji said.

Atiku Will Lose Northern Support If He Succumbs To Wike – Metu

Chief Olisa Metuh has about the richest depository of the institutional character and flares of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He was an ex-officio member of the National Executive Committee, NEC, National Auditor, National Vice-Chairman, Southeast and most recently, National Publicity Secretary of the party.

He bears in his body the marks of his stewardship and fidelity to the party as memorably etched by his recent trials over administrative issues in the party.

Metuh had until now watched from the sidelines as fellow party grandees as Prof Jerry Gana, Chief Bode George among others entered the fray in the contentions between the Nyesom Wike tendency and the party leadership over the outcome of the 2022 National Convention of the party.

Arising from his quietude, Metuh in this interview gives a historical perspective of the issues in dispute with a caution to party elders not to misadvise Governor Wike.

Excerpts:

What is your perspective on the issues in the PDP?

I speak from institutional knowledge as the longest serving member of the party’s NEC, I don’t think it is fair to say that the South has been shortchanged in the affairs of the party.

If you put it the other way, I think that the South has gotten more than a fair share in the affairs of the PDP and we are comfortable with that and we don’t have any problem.

I admire the courage, the doggedness of Bode George who has been our leader for a while and I think he should tone it down. If I recall in history, I remember that he was very consistent in trying to remove Atiku from the National Executive Committee, of the PDP in 2005. But these things are in the past and should not be personal as we are talking about the progress of the party now.

Perception of the role of Bode George in the Wike Camp

In 2006 towards the end of Obasanjo’s term he led the Southern conference and made a powerful statement that a Southern president should continue after Obasanjo. So, he is being consistent, he champions the affairs of the South.

But let’s remain on what is correct. It is not correct, it is not proper that in an election year that you would be insisting on who will be the chairman of the party to a candidate, you can only do that when you believe or when you are working towards the failure of that candidate.

If you are actually working for Atiku to win the presidency you cannot be insisting on a chairman because the president when he is elected can always change a chairman whether he is acting or elected, he has enough influence to change him. But if you are actively working for him to fail, you are wishing him not to win or you don’t believe that he will win, then we can understand why you are fighting for the issue.

You cannot be insisting on a chairman on somebody that you believe will win election. Who has installed chairman for Buhari? Nobody! Did anybody install for Jonathan when he was president? Did anybody install for Obasanjo? No!

On the principle of zoning in PDP?

What we are talking about is that when a president wins an election that there will be zoning and things will be well discussed. PDP believes in the principle of zoning. The president will come from a different zone from the vice-president and secretary to the Government, the chairman of the party, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House. That is the principle of zoning that is entrenched in our party.

So, there is no need to talk about it until after we have won election, let us come together and fight and insist on PDP winning the election. If we do not want Atiku to win the election then we understand, let us bring down the house.

How to remove the chairman

The national chairman said that if a Northern candidate emerges and if the party asks him to resign, that he will resign.

If you want the chairman not to continue, then engineer the party to ask him, engineer the National Executive Committee, engineer the National Caucus, engineer the leadership of the party to ask him, then he will resign. But when you are outside and issue press statements it is not the party that is talking, it is an individual or group of friends that are talking.

Now supposing the candidate of the party buckles to pressure to give directive against some people running in the election aligned to those who say they are withdrawing from his campaign council and ask his people to withdraw from their own campaigns? Won’t it be chaos?

I am aware that there is a lot of pressure asking him to issue the same statement against those people but he has not. That is where we admire the patience, tolerance, the accommodating qualities of Atiku. Any other person would have taken a hard stance. He has not used any foul language. He has not taken any hard stance. He has been accommodating. They pushed him to London, he went to London. …

People will come to him, let us fight these men he will say no. It is obvious that Nigeria needs such a father figure, a tolerant person. In the midst of insults, in the midst of provocations, indeed undue provocations because things that can be discussed inside the house are being thrown about and being marketed.

I believe that it is only when you want to distract somebody that you go about making press statements in the media and in the newspapers. If you want to advise him, come into the house and advise them.

When they called the National Executive Committee meeting you people were not there. How do you mean well when you do not discuss inhouse but always go on TV? The cardinal principle in our party is that we do not discuss internal disagreements in public. And who knows this better than Chief Bode George who has been a deputy national chairman?

So, what is the motive of the Wike Group?

The question is what is the motive? What are the intents of these group of people? That is the question.

The motive cannot be to defend the South. I am a southerner. Are you defending the South when the South has gotten more than its share in the affairs of the PDP in the last 20 years.

We have only had two persons run for the presidency from the North: Yar‘Adua who spent two years and Atiku Abubakar who ran four years ago and lost.

Obasanjo ran election and ruled for eight years, Jonathan ruled for two years on behalf of Yar‘Adua, ran election and ruled for four years and ran another election and lost.

What would happen if Atiku yields to Wike?

He will lose a lot of support in the North. He will be seen as a weak leader. He will be seen as someone as anyone can push around. And this is the most important thing and which is that Atiku is running an election to be the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, to face insurgents, to face the threats against the country, to deal with separatists and bandits and terrorists.

Now if he is a candidate and starts succumbing to the whims, to the threats and to the pressure on an individual or a group, then you are portraying him as a weak man that cannot control the affairs of the country.

If you really want him to see your reason then you will discuss with him in house but when you issue threats to him and he buckles and succumbs, then he cannot be the commander in chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, then he will be a weak president. Then you are portraying him as somebody who is not strong enough and I don’t think that that is in the interest of the party.

So, there is no way Atiku will buckle. If Atiku buckles and succumbs to the demands of such a group, that is making threats in public, then he cannot be a commander-in-chief, he cannot survive the pressure from any part of the country, from the Southeast, from the South-South, from the Northwest or any part of the country.

Or from even external forces, other countries that would want to threaten us or even with trade disputes. When we have trade disputes with China, when we meet all these issues, what will the president do? He will buckle if he can buckle to people who are using the media to press issues that they can press in private.

Traditional rulers in Abia State, have said they would lead a high powered delegation to President Muhamnadu Buhari for ‘a royal truce’ over the continued detention of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The royal fathers disclosed this Thursday evening when they visited Kanu’s family at their Isiama Afaraukwu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

They expressed worry over his reported failing health, and said they would have audience with the President as soon as he returns from the United Nations General Assembly trip to seek solution to Kanu’s plight.

The monarchs noted that Kanu’s late father, HRM Eze Israel Kanu, was one of them, hence there was no way they could abandon the family in their trying moment.

Fielding questions from newsmen after a closed-door meeting with Kanu’s family, the National Chairman, Royal Fathers of Nigeria, cum Chairman, Ikwuano/Umuahia Supreme Council, HRM, Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu, said the ‘royal intervention’ had become necessary to help stave off the bitter consequences of Kanu dying in custody.

He expressed optimism that the President would heed the wise counsel of the Royal Fathers and consider political solution for Kanu in the overall interest of the country.

Eze Ofoegbu who said that the monarchs also used the visit to solidarise with the Kanu family, strongly condemned the September 14, 2017 military invasion of Kanu’s compound, describing it as a desecration of the royal stool.

Adding his voice former Chairman of Traditional Rulers Council, Umuahia North LGA, and the Traditional Ruler of Okwulaga Afaraukwu Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Eddy Ibeabuchi, decried the continued detention of Kanu despite appeals by eminent Nigerians and groups for his unconditional release.

He said that it would be unfair for the IPOB Leader “who is fighting against injustice and the deliberate exclusion of Ndigbo from the scheme of things” to be termed a terrorist “while real mass murderers are being pampered by the same Government persecuting a freedom fighter”.

The royal father urged Ndigbo not to abandon Kanu who he said, had sacrificed so much for their survival and freedom.

He added that while Kanu’s legal team continued to explore the legal avenues for his freedom, there was need to also seek political solution to end the stand-off.

On Kanu’s deteriorating health condition, the royal father advised the Federal Government not to allow any harm befall him in custody as the country might not be able to handle the after effect of such ugly scenario.

Responding, Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, thanked the royal fathers for standing with the family.

He promised that the family would apply the various “reasonable suggestions” they offered during the closed door meeting.

Pince Emmanuel who regretted that efforts by the family to secure a private physician for Kanu was frustrated by the DSS, sought the intervention of the international community.

“I have made numerous efforts to get him a private physician but each time I try my best, they ( DSS), turn it down. He is going through very difficult times. He is complaining bitterly about his health. He has big issue with his stomach.

“This is the time for the world to come in and say something about that because if he dies there, it is not going to be easy for anyone.

” So, what I’m asking people to do from today is to make sure they sustain the pressure to allow Mazi Nnamdi Kanu travel overseas for medical treatment.”

He, however, expressed disappointment over the non-committal of the South East political elite in the efforts to free Kanu.

” The political elite are not doing enough; I see them as part of the problem and not the solution. They don’t have the balls to stand up and make case for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

” They even find it difficult to visit him. Apart from Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, no other Governor from South East has visited him in detention.”

Speaking with newsmen also, member representing Aba South state constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Obinna Ichita who has been part of the peace initiate between the Federal Government and the Kanus, said political solution remained the only way to solve the Kanu/ FG debacle.

Ichita who said he had been privately engaging top senior federal officials over Kanu, expressed optimism that the intervention by the traditional institution would be fruitful.

The lawmaker who said that releasing Kanu would help douse mounting tension in the South East, urged the Federal Government to quickly consider the clamour for political solution over the lingering face-off.

In their separate remarks, President General of Afaraukwu Autonomous Community, Chief Ugwumba Oriaku; his Isiama Afaraukwu counterpart, Obioma Ebogu; Chief Levi Ogbonna of Okwulaga Community; and Chief John Nwagwu of Enyiukwu Afaraukwu community, begged Buhari to listen to the preponderance of appeals to release Kanu.

They expressed deep worry over the reported failing health of Kanu and begged the Federal Government to give him a special consideration as a prince, and in honour of his late parents.

Highlight of the event was a visit by the monarchs to the grave site of Kanu’s late parents inside his father’s palace.

There was heavy gun shooting on Friday evening between soldiers of 14 Brigade, Army Headquarters, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Barracks, Ohafia and gunmen in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

Information gathered by our reporter has it that the fierce exchange of gunfire between the gunmen and soldiers has caused panic as residents and indigenes of Ebem Ohafia LGA hide in their respective home in order to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

Policeman Who Killed Kolade Johnson Bags Life Imprisonment

A Lagos state high court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a dismissed police officer, Ogunyemi Olalekan, to life imprisonment for killing 35-year-old, Kolade Johnson.

Olalekan, who was said to be attached to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SACS) of the Nigeria Police, shot Mr Johnson in the lower abdomen with an AK-47 rifle at about 5.10pm on Sunday, March 31, 2019, at a viewing centre in the Mangoro area of Lagos.

The offence contravenes Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Johnson, a football fan, was watching a televised match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur when he was shot.

The police later fingered the dismissed police inspector, Olalekan, and a sergeant, Godwin Orji, as the officers involved in the shooting.

Following an orderly trial, Olalekan was dismissed from the force while Orji was acquitted. Olalekan was subsequently arraigned before the court for the extrajudicial killing of Johnson.

During the trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses, while the defence called two witnesses.

A pathologist, Oluwaseun Williams, who testified as the sixth prosecution witness, said Johnson suffered six gunshot injuries.

Williams, who is a consultant pathologist at the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, said he had practised pathology for 10 years and interpreted an autopsy report during the cross-examination.

“There were four injuries on the thigh, two injuries on the hands, one on the right hem-iscrotum (either half of a scrotum), one on the left hemi-scrotum,” he said. “The injury on the left hemi-scrotum was an abrasion which could be from anything and the second-hand injury was not related to injuries caused by gunshots. Six of the injuries were related to the penetrative missiles.

“The injuries on the thigh were through and through. There are features that are suggestive that they were caused by firearm missiles. We counted six injuries identified as firearm injuries. The anterior defects in the right hemi-scrotum and thigh had dark burn edges caused by something hot and penetrative at the same time which is suggestive of a bullet.”

The pathologist said a wound on the deceased’s left hand was a gunshot injury while the injury on the right hand was a laceration.

“In this case, the cause of death was gunshot injuries,” Williams told the court.

Delivering judgment on the matter, Justice Adenike Coker held that the convict did not demonstrate an intention to kill the victim.

The court, therefore, found him guilty of manslaughter rather than murder.

Justice Coker further held that the convict would be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 25 years in prison.

 

Abuja Professor Who Assaulted Police Orderly Lands In Prison

A magistrate’s court sitting in Wuse, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has remanded Prof Zainab Duke Abiola in Suleja Prison over the assault of Inspector Teju Moses, a police orderly attached to her.

The professor was arraigned alongside her domestic aide, Rebecca Enechido, on Friday.

In a video clip that went viral on Wednesday, the officer was seen seated on the floor and asking to be taken to the hospital for medical attention while bleeding.

The Police accused Abiola, a legal practitioner and human rights activist, of attempt to commit culpable homicide and intentional insult to cause a breach of trust.

At the court on Friday, the professor was denied bail while the matter was adjourned till October 5, 2022.

The magistrate also ordered that she should be remanded in Suleja Prison pending the adjourned date.

Earlier, Abiola had denied assaulting the officer, saying it was strange that the IGP would forcefully violate “the fundamental Rights and liberties of a distinguished law- abiding citizen and proceed to forcefully take her pictures and maliciously publish same in the print and electronic media in this nascent democratic dispensation.”

In a statement issued on her behalf by the Afro-European Lawyers League, she said: “Our attention has been drawn to a fallacious malicious defamatory publication against our respected Alumnus of the National Institute of Policy and Security Studies, NIPPS, Professor Zainab Duke Mni alleging assault on one of her police Orderlies. We categorically state that this is NOT true and Nothing could be further from the truth. For the records our respected revered Professor Zainab has Never assaulted anybody anywhere at any time. It is not in her character.

“The facts are: 1. That on the 20th of April 2022 the IGP approved the revalidation and deployment of police Orderlies to our leader based on the fact that she is the Chief Legal Consultant to the Nigerian Police and has her office at the Force headquarters, Abuja.

“2. That the police consequently assigned a female police officer who was among the perpetrators of Violence against innocent Nigerian Citizens during the ENDSARS imbroglio.

“3. That consequent upon discovery of her Orderly’s involvement in police brutality against Nigerians that Professor Zainab rejected the posting of a brutal officer and returned the said Orderly back to Force Headquarters to her bosses and told her Bye bye on the 19th of September.

“4. That to our surprise around 10pm the former Orderly returned with a Vengeance banging on our gates with some dangerous weapons including a gun threatening to kill everybody in the compound and that the police Ordely beat up family members if the Professor’s household.

“5. That as can be seen in the video a crowd soon gathered and there was street brawling crowd fighting and loss of properties.

“6. That it is very strange that the IGP will forcefully, brutally and illegally violate the fundamental Rights and liberties of a distinguished law- abiding citizen and proceed to forcefully take her pictures and maliciously publish same in the print and electronic media in this nascent democratic dispensation.”

Calling for the sack of the IGP, the lawyers said: “We hereby call on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the Inspector General of Police and bring him to book to face the consequences of this gross violation of our constitution as Alkali Baba Usman is NOT a fit and proper person to hold the office of IOP.”
