Four Ukraine Regions To Be Taken Over After Referendum Results Was Made Public

Russia is preparing to annex four regions in Ukraine after the results of controversial referendums were made public.

The voting to determine whether the regions want to become part of Russia faces serious condemnations from countries.

In Zaporizhzhia, the officials announced that 93.11 percent of voters backed the move to join Russia.

In Kherson, the authorities said over 87.05 percent of electors declared their support through the ballots.

In Lugansk, the officials claimed that more than 98.42 percent voted in favor of the incorporation.

In Donetsk, the authorities said the victory was near total with 99.23 percent in favour of annexation.

President Vladimir Putin has given an indication the Kremlin was prepared to assume full control of the regions.

“Saving people in the territories where this referendum is taking place…is the focus of the attention of our entire society and of the entire country”, he asserted.

President Recep Erdogan of Turkey is to discuss the development with Putin after Ukraine sought his intervention.

Erdogan disclosed that President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded Turkey’s support for the affected regions and to “convince Putin.”

“I wish they wouldn’t hold referendums and that we could instead solve the problem diplomaticall”, he said.

Turkey, a member of the NATO defence alliance, has good relations with the two countries at war since the late February invasion.

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa has appealed to Nigerians to shun fraud and the likes.

The senior police officer counselled youths in particular to avoid internet fraud and join the EFCC to combat monetary crimes.

Bawa gave the advise in his speech on “Inherent risks on Cyber/Internet fraud” at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries in Dakwo Mega Region, Abuja.

Represented by Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Joseph Yetwi, he observed that cyber fraud was rampant among youths within the ages of 14 to 40.

He stressed that corrupt practices have no sacred place and occur in schools, offices, governments, courts, churches, mosques, etc.

The anti-graft chief also gave some references of corrupt figures in the Bible that never ended well.

Bawa urged parents to always conduct due diligence on their children by following Proverbs 22: 6: ‘Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it’.

“Exodus 20:15 says ‘You shall not steal.’ It is important to note that all forms of financial crimes are directly and indirectly theft or stealing.”

The chairman added that there are many more passages of the Bible that emphasized God’s disapproval of financial crimes and corruption.

“There is no place for a fraudster or corrupt person in the Kingdom of God. If anyone engages in these vices, he or she will suffer punishment from God and man”, he said.

Bawa urged law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, religious bodies, community leaders, non-governmental organizations and Nigerians to jointly tackle the problem.

APC National Chairman Adamu Accuses Tinubu Of Running A One-Man Show

Bola Ahmed Tinubu and APC Chairman Abdullahi Adamu

Barely one week after releasing his presidential campaign council list, Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has come under heavy fire from the leadership and national working committee of the party.

In a strongly worded letter written and signed by the National Chairman of APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, to Tinubu who is still having a vacation in London, the party accused him of arrogantly ignoring their contribution to the composition of his Presidential Campaign Council.

Tinubu had on Friday unveiled a 422-man committee comprising political heavyweights and other notable members to pilot the various sub-committees of the campaign council.

The list of members released by Secretary of the Presidential Campaign Council, James Faleke, in Abuja, followed a series of postponements and conjectures about those who would be saddled with the task of leading the ruling party’s bid to retain power at the federal level.

The campaign council chaired by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, as co-deputy chairmen.

Also on the PCC are APC governors, ministers, lawmakers, ambassadors as well as serving and past public office holders.

Zonal and state coordinators, advisers, campaign patrons, directors, deputy directors and secretaries of directorates were also named.

The sub-committees include media and publicity; support group coordination; national youth mobilisation; parliamentarian; trade and economic; agriculturists/commodities; campaign planning; civil societies; Diaspora directorate; election planning and monitoring; finance; fund raising; and humanitarian/social.

Others are ICT/data management; intelligence and security; labour; logistics and support service; medicals; policy research and strategy; protocol and events, and others.

But a defiant Adamu wrote that the council membership list was not a true representation of the three-man committee set up to harmonize it.

The three-member committee comprised the national working committee comprising the National Organising Secretary, National Legal Adviser and Deputy Women Leader.

The letter read, “On behalf of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, I present my compliments to Your Excellency, and have the honour to convey to you, in truth and respect, the Committee’s opinion and position, regarding the above-mentioned subject matter, with a view to having a clear understanding about the respective roles and responsibilities of the principal organs of the Party charged with the duties of conducting the campaigns in the forth-coming general elections.

“This correspondence has become necessary in view of developments that took place over the last few days around the purported appointments into the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) that was announced precipitately by officials of the Council, without making recourse to the NWC for approval. All along, the NWC had been disposed towards the campaign in a cooperative spirit that is driven by the overall interest of the Party and the singular desire of victory for our candidates, in the persons of your esteemed self and your running mate.

“It is against this background that the NWC received with astonishment and regret, the press release by the PCC on 23rd September 2022, in which a purported list of appointees was announced, which effectively served as the approved roster of participants in the Party’s Presidential Campaign Council.

“The purported list not only came as a complete surprise to the NWC and the Party’s leadership, but also contravened the principles and purposes of the arrangements that you and I had led towards the adoption of the Organogram of the PCC, and its principal officials.

“Perhaps it has become necessary owing to the passage of time, that I should draw Your Excellency’s attention to the agreements that we reached in principle around the final adoption of the PCC list, based on the understanding that it was a work in progress, until such a time that the Joint NWC/PCC Committee that was established to formalise the structure and populate the list, submits its report.

“Your Excellency will no doubt recall our meetings in my office and also at the NWC Conference Room at the Party’s National Secretariat, on Wednesday, 7th September 2022, during which we discussed the details of the Organogram of the PCC and its composition, as a collaborative project between the two entities. Our recollection of those meetings clearly leaves us in no doubt that a breach of agreement has occurred, and that a return to the principles of cooperation and respect for each other is required.

“In Your Excellency’s own words, which I take the liberty to quote here, which I also hold dearly, you stated that “there is a burden on everyone’s shoulders towards delivering the elections to the Party and the candidate”. This has been the view of the NWC and myself all along since Your Excellency’s emergence as our Great Party’s Flagbearer.

“The NWC is striving under trying circumstances to keep faith with this vision, and to take our Party and candidates to victory, not only in the Presidential elections but in all others across the elective strata of offices.

“May I, therefore, point out to Your Excellency, that winning election is a cooperative as well as a collaborative effort, that is done in a transparent and disinterested manner by all parties concerned, by respecting established boundaries and acknowledging the contributions of everyone. The NWC believes that any sign of disarray in the Party’s ranks will undermine the spirit and ethos of the campaign and give undue alarm to faithful members and followers of the Party across the country.

“At the same, such a development would undoubtedly come as “Manna from Heaven” for the opposition parties, whose only desire when all else fails, is to see the introduction of rancour, division and disinclination in the leadership of our Great Party.

“I am sure Your Excellency will agree with me that this is an eventuality that we must do all in our power to prevent from happening. You will also agree that we owe it a duty as leaders to provide guidance by example to the rest of the Party including the PCC, to abide by agreements and adhere strictly to the work ethos that has been adopted by all of us. It is only by doing so that we will establish the premise for victory and gain the trust and confidence of our dear countrymen and women.

“Without further admonishment or complaints, I wish hereby to call upon Your Excellency to restrain the PCC from undertaking solo projects of this nature and agree to work with all stakeholders towards taking our Party to victory. I shall not find it necessary to reiterate the importance of the Party in the overall scheme of things in these campaigns, and the singular position of the NWC in driving the process towards our securing of victory in the polls.

“It suffices for me to convey the general and overwhelming sentiment of the NWC with regards to the ill-timed and unfortunate release of the PCC list, which confounded rather than pleased the members and whose withdrawal will assure the NWC of Your Excellency’s respect and disposition towards the Party, as well as the magnanimous spirit of cooperation towards achieving victory together with the NWC.”

NDLEA: FG Approves N580m For Purchase Of Armoured Vehicles To Fight Drug

NDLEA Arrests 14,480 Suspected Drug Traffickers In 10 Months – Marwa
Buba Marwa

The Federal Executive Council, FEC, yesterday approved N580.50 million for the purchase of four armoured vehicles for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Attorney-General of the Federation AGF and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The AGF cited the recent feat by the agency when it busted a drug racket in Lagos, recovering N194bn worth of cocaine from an Ikorodu warehouse.

He noted that the recent gains on the war on drugs would prompt reprisal attacks on NDLEA from drug barons, hence the need for the vehicles.

He also said the federal government was “very happy” with the successes being recorded by the NDLEA whereby it arrested 18,940 suspects and secured 2,904 convictions between January and July 2022.

Describing the development in detail, Malami said the 14-seater vehicles would take 16 weeks to deliver in January 2023.

He said: “Today (yesterday), a memo was presented by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, that is the Federal Ministry of Justice, which was relating to a parastatal under the supervision of the office of the Attorney General; the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

“The purpose of the memo was to seek approval of the council for the award of contract for the supply of four customised armoured security vehicles of 14 seater model for the NDLEA and the contract sum is N580,500,000 only inclusive of 7.5 per cent value-added tax with a delivery period of 16 weeks.”

The Minister said the decision to procure the armoured vehicles was taken to safeguard the lives of NDLEA personnel.

“It is common knowledge that recently, the NDLEA has been repositioned and arising from the support both in terms of our capacity building, hardware and associated things, they have been recording an extra-ordinary or unprecedented success. Recently they seized about 1.8 tons of cocaine having a market value of about N194 billion.

“So, with all these successes recorded it is only logical that the criminals and their syndicate are now devising means inclusive of attacks on NDLEA personnel and it is with that in mind that the memo was presented for the procurement of such vehicles for the NDLEA and the council approved,” he added.

Coolio, the Grammy-winning rapper, producer, and actor best known for his 1995 hit “Gangsta’s Paradise,” has died. He was 59.

The rapper’s longtime manager Jarel Posey confirmed the news to Variety, saying that Coolio died around 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday afternoon. According to TMZ, Coolio was found at a friend’s house.

“We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client, Coolio, who passed away this afternoon. He touched the world with the gift of his talent and will be missed profoundly,” Sheila Finegan, his manager at Trinity Artists International, said in a statement to Variety. “Thank you to everyone worldwide who has listened to his music and to everyone who has been reaching out regarding his passing. Please have Coolio’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

Coolio rose to prominence in the Los Angeles rap scene in the ’90s, scoring his big break when he recorded the song “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the 1995 film “Dangerous Minds,” starring Michelle Pfeiffer. It quickly became one of the most popular rap songs of all time, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and ending 1995 as the No. 1 single of that year in the United States. In 1996, “Gangsta’s Paradise” was nominated for record of the year and best rap solo performance at the Grammy Awards, with Coolio winning the latter.

The song was soon spoofed by “Weird Al” Yankovic, who satirized it as “Amish Paradise,” though Coolio was adamant that he did not give Weird Al permission to do so. However, Coolio later said in interviews that the two made amends.

Born Artis Leon Ivey Jr. on Aug. 1, 1963 in Pennsylvania, Coolio later moved to Compton, Calif. where he joined the hip-hop group WC and the Maad Circle in 1991. A few years later, in 1994, Coolio signed with Tommy Boy Records and released his debut album “It Takes a Thief.” Catapulted by its lead single “Fantastic Voyage,” “It Takes a Thief” peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart and was certified platinum.

After the success of “Gangsta’s Paradise” in the mid-’90s, Coolio continued to grow in fame and eventually recorded “Aw, Here It Goes!” for the opening sequence of Nickelodeon’s “Kenan & Kel,” which he also appeared in. His third album, “My Soul,” released in 1997 and contained “C U When U Get There,” which hit No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified gold but didn’t have the same effect as his first two records, and thus became his last record with Tommy Boy.

Coolio would go on to release five more studio albums: 2001’s “Coolio.com,” 2002’s “El Cool Magnifico,” 2006’s “The Return of the Gangsta,” 2008’s “Steal Hear” and 2009’s “From the Bottom 2 the Top.” As his commercial success in music faded, Coolio became a TV personality, placing third on a German talent show about artists looking to make a comeback in 2004 and appearing on “Celebrity Big Brother” in 2009. Food was also a big love of Coolio’s. He released a cookbook, “Cookin’ With Coolio,” in 2009 and competed on the Food Network series “Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off” in 2012, coming in second place.

A talented actor as well, Coolio appeared in dozens of films and TV shows throughout his career. Starting with a guest spot as himself on “Martin” (1995), Coolio’s credits include the “Dangerous Minds” TV spinoff (1996), “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” (1996), “Batman & Robin” (1997), “The Nanny” (1998), “Tyrone” (1999), “Midnight Mass” (1999), “Charmed” (2002), “Star-ving” (2009), “Futurama” (2001, 2010) and “Gravity Falls” (2012).

According to his IMDb page, Coolio had three movies in the works: Rob Margolies’ “Bobcat Moretti,” a monster film called “It Wants Blood 2” and a TV movie “Vegas High.” Coolio also continued to perform, having just recently played a set at Chicago’s Riot Fest on Sept. 18.

IGP Usman Alkali Baba

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, says the police and other security agencies will ensure that the 2023 general elections are peaceful.

He spoke in Abuja on Wednesday at a security policy dialogue entitled: ‘2022 General Election: Insecurity as a Threat to Constitutional Succession.’

The dialogue was organised by CLEEN Foundation, in partnership with Ford Foundation.

The IGP, represented by DCP Basil Idegwu, Head, Police Federal Operations, specifically said the Force was working to sustain the noticeable improvements recorded in the conduct of security personnel during the Osun, Ekiti, and Anambra off-cycle elections.

“The police are reaching out to all security stakeholders to share actionable intelligence, carry out joint and various strategic planning and execution of operations which have been yielding dividends at the moment.

“However, it’s imperative to note that in matters of security, every citizen is a stakeholder and that’s why this initiative organised to dialogue is highly commended because all hands must be on deck to ensure that the current insecurity is fought to a standstill in the country,” he said.

Executive Director, CLEEN Foundation, Gad Peter, urged the police and other security agencies to develop a comprehensive roadmap on public safety and security towards the general election.

Peter said that the dialogue was necessitated by the growth in scale, spread, and sophistication of violent threats in the country.
