Babayemi-Adeleke Suit: Security Operatives In A ‘Show Of Strength’
Babayemi and Adeleke

Ahead of today’s Supreme Court judgement on the matter instituted by Mr Dotun Babayemi, against the candidature of Osun governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke, security operatives on Thursday engaged in a ‘show of strength’ across Osogbo, Osun state capital.

ABN TV reports that Adeleke, on Wednesday, expressed optimism of a favourable judgement as Supreme Court rules on the suit instituted against his candidature as the PDP flagbearer in the Osun July 16 governorship poll.

The Apex Court is expected on Thursday to rule on the case filed against Adeleke by a governorship aspirant on the platform of the PDP, Prince Dotun Babayemi, who had asked the court to invalidate primaries that produced Osun governor-elect, citing non-compliance with court order.

In his judgement on the matter on May 18, Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of a Federal High Court, sitting in Osogbo, had upheld the governorship primary that produced Adeleke.

Also, the Court of Appeal, Akure Division, in its judgement of July 20 on the appeal filed against the decision of the Federal High Court, Osogbo, aligned with the lower court and dismissed Babayemi’s appeal.

But as early as 8:am on Thursday, a combined security team that have soldiers, police and Department of State Services operatives, as well as men and officers of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were seen moving through major streets in Osogbo in what could be regarded as ‘show of strength.’

The patrol team having over 20 trucks filled with armed security personnel were seen around Dada Estate, Olaiya, Old Garage Ayetoro and Ilesa Garage -all located within Osogbo metropolis.

Speaking with reporters, Osun police command public relations officer, Yemisi Opalola, said the patrol was to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

She said, “We are aware that the Supreme Court will rule on the case involving Mr. Babayemi and Osun governor-elect, Senator Adeleke today.

“The show of strength that you observed is to send signal to anyone planning to cause chaos that we are on the ground to prevent the breakdown of law and order. People should go about their normal duty. No cause for alarm.”

Grealish Not Good Enough For Man City – O’Hara

Grealish Not Good Enough For Man City – O’Hara
Jack Grealish

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has described Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish as a one dimensional player who has not done enough to still remain in the starting line up of the Citizens.

In an interview with Grosvenor Sport, O’Hara stated that his form has depreciated since joining Man City.

O’Hara says Grealish isn’t worthy of a place in City’s XI.

He told Grosvenor Sport: “Jack Grealish has looked miles off it. He’s not good enough for Manchester City on this form.

“I like Jack, I think he’s England’s golden boy, he was brilliant at Aston Villa in an average team, where he could get the ball, carry the ball and win free-kicks. But it’s a different level at Manchester City.

“I don’t think he’d currently get in the team for Tottenham either. Not ahead of Son Heung-min or Dejan Kulusevski. I don’t think so.”

Grealish needs to stop being “one dimensional” according to O’Hara, who believes he’s not being himself in the City set-up.

“The way he is playing at the moment, I think he’s one-dimensional and he needs to change his game,” he continued.

“He needs to have a bit more belief in himself, take the £100 million price tag off his back. He needs to think, I’m going to get the ball, I’m going to carry it, go round players, if I give it away and I get dragged off after 55 minutes, so be it.

“You’re better off being yourself in a game and walking off the pitch afterwards thinking, I’ve done me today.

“That’s better than walking off the pitch after being dragged off by Pep Guardiola once again and thinking, I kept it simple, I kept passing it five yards to Kevin De Bruyne.”

You’re Playing Sterling In The Wrong Position – Gallas Tells Potter

You’re Playing Sterling In The Wrong Position - Gallas Tells Potter
Raheem Sterling

Former Chelsea star, William Gallas has criticized Chelsea manager, Graham Potter for using Raheem Sterling in a wrong position.

The former Brighton boss was in charge of the 1-1 draw with Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League where he opted to play Sterling on the left flank.

And Gallas says he does not understand the manager’s thinking behind where to play Sterling.

“That is a problem. When I saw Sterling playing as left wing-back, I didn’t understand it,” Gallas told Genting Casino.

“It’s difficult for me to understand why he wants to experiment with something like this, especially in a Champions League game.

“You are playing at home and you put Cucurella as a centre-back, you have Fofana on the bench with Koulibaly, Chalobah on the bench, and you put Sterling as a left-wing back? I don’t understand.

“In the end, they didn’t have a good result, they drew 1-1. People will always judge the result, and the question is why did he put those two players in those positions?”

Personal life

In 2013, citing the influence of his mother, Sterling was quoted as saying he was “not 100 per cent religious but my belief is strong. When the time is right, I will fully be Christian.” He added that he put his faith in God and that he prays regularly. He has one daughter, Melody Rose, born in 2012 after a brief relationship. His middle-name Shaquille comes from his grandmother, who was living in America at the time and wanted to name him after Shaquille O’Neal.

On 8 August 2013, Sterling was arrested for an alleged common assault on his former girlfriend, a model. He was found not guilty at Liverpool Magistrates Court on 20 September, when the complainant was unable to offer consistent evidence. A few months earlier, on 20 May 2013, a charge of common assault on a different woman was dropped after a witness failed to turn up to court.

Governor Godwin Obaseki has denied his purported endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, saying it is absolutely false and malicious.

Special adviser to the Edo State governor on media projects, Crusoe Osagie made the remarks in a statement yesterday. Mr Osagie said the story about governor Obaseki endorsing the Labour Party candidate was being peddled by detractors with ulterior motives, intent on misleading and misinforming members of the public for their selfish interest.

“The news item in a section of the media, stating that Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has endorsed the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is absolutely false and malicious.

“No statement to such effect originated from the governor. The story is being peddled by detractors with ulterior motives, intent on misleading and misinforming members of the public for their selfish interest,” Mr Osagie said in the statement.

The governor’s aide said “Obaseki has from the onset of the electioneering cycle, been at the forefront of the campaign for our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja charged the National Council on Climate Change to formulate appropriate policies toward achieving green growth and sustainable economic development for Nigeria.

Inaugurating the Council before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council meeting, the President in a statement by Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina said it marked the commencement of the implementation of the Climate Change Act 2021 and a new chapter in the renewed response to climate change in the country.

The President also directed the Attorney General and Minister of Justice in conjunction with the Minister of Environment to initiate appropriate amendments to ‘’noticeable implementation challenges’’ inherent in the Act.

Highlighting the losses and damages caused by the recent increasing floods in several parts of the country as well in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other parts of East and Southern Africa, the President described climate change as one of the biggest challenges facing humanity.

“It [Climate Change] is complex and dynamic; and requires multidimensional and multi-sectoral initiatives to address its impacts and avert its rapid advance.

“Updated data show increases in sea level rise, heat waves, wildfires, floods, desertification, drying wetlands, and many more disruptive climate occurrences.

‘’The latest Intergovernmental Panel on climate change report warns that rising Green House Gas emissions could soon outstrip the ability of communities to adapt, and the window for taking decisive steps needed to spare our planet from the gravest impacts of climate change is rapidly narrowing.

‘’We cannot ignore what is happening in our local environment. The increasing re-occurrence of floods in several parts of the country is a wakeup call,’’ he said, lamenting the loss of lives, damage, and destruction of infrastructures such as roads, bridges, schools, and agricultural production.

President Buhari, therefore, reiterated the determination of his Administration to strengthen the national response to climate change and accelerate the implementation of decisive actions to reduce its impacts on the people and economy.

He reaffirmed that Nigeria is a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is an established international treaty to combat “dangerous human interference with the climate system”, in part by stabilizing Green House Gas concentrations in the atmosphere.

‘’It is against this background that in November 2021, after COP 26 in Glasgow, I signed the Nigeria Climate Change Act despite noticeable implementation challenges inherent in the Act, to set the framework for mainstreaming climate change action, carbon budgeting, and the establishment of the National Council on Climate Change.

‘’The council is tasked with the responsibility of formulating appropriate policies and other mechanisms for achieving low Green House Gas emissions, including green growth and sustainable economic development for Nigeria.

‘’In a clear demonstration of our commitments as enshrined in our Nationally Determined Contributions and the Net Zero-Target by 2060, I also approved, on 25th July 2022, the appointment of the Director General and Secretary for the National Council on Climate Change.

‘’It is imperative therefore that those lapses earlier alluded to – which include the establishment of states and Zonal offices creating a huge and costly bureaucracy are not acceptable. The Act also takes out the Commissioners of Environments from the states as members of the Council, it also did not make transitional provisions capturing the work of the Inter-ministerial Working Group.

‘’This group was responsible for Energy Transition, the supervisory oversight of the Ministry of Environment and the establishment of an Executive Management structure at the secretariat level to support the DG in running the Council Secretariat.

‘’Accordingly, I hereby direct the Attorney General and Minister of Justice in conjunction with the Minister of Environment to initiate the appropriate amendment to reflect these observations.’’

Ahead of COP27 in Sharm El Shiekh, Egypt, the President expressed optimism that the National Council on Climate Change would harmonize all issues relating to Climate Change, Energy Transition Plan, Emissions Trading Scheme, and the Carbon Trading Framework, in line with its mandate under the Act, so that Nigeria can have a robust and impactful outing that captures Nigeria’s Climate Change priorities.

He said the composition of the council is a reflection of the magnitude of the problem and the seriousness of our response, adding that it comprises the highest level of governance and a representation of all key sectors of the economy.’

President Buhari also used the occasion to thank Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for heading Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, presiding over the global launch of the plan, and initiating its marketing by engaging key stakeholders in the United States.

He urged the Council to consolidate on these first steps and ensure sustained marketing of the plan.

Mohammed Abdullahi, the Minister of Environment, thanked the President for ‘’walking the talk’’ on climate change at the international, regional and national level, demonstrating immense leadership towards Nigeria’s quest for net-zero by 2060.

The Council is chaired by the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, with the Vice President as Vice Chairman. The Chairman of, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, is also a member.

Other members of the Council are the Ministers responsible for Environment; Petroleum Resources; Budget and National Planning; Justice; Mines and Steel Development; Finance; Agriculture and Rural Development; Power; Women Affairs; Transportation; and Water Resources.

The Governor of the Central Bank; the National Security Adviser; President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria; a representative of the private sector on climate change or environmental-related matters(representative of National Conservation Foundation); a representative of the National Council on Women Societies; a representative of National Youth Congress, and a representative of the Civil Society Organisation are also members of the Council

The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Salisu Dahiru, will serve as Secretary.

After the inauguration, the Federal Executive Council observed a minute silence in honour of Chief Ayodele Ogunlade, a former Minister of National Planning, under former Head of State, Sani Abacha, who died on Tuesday aged 88.

US Pushing Situation Toward Standoff Of Nuclear Powers – Antonov

US Pushing Situation Toward Standoff Of Nuclear Powers - Antonov

Washington’s actions are pushing the situation toward an open confrontation of largest nuclear powers, with Western countries testing Russia’s patience, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said in an article published on the website of the US’ National Interest magazine on Wednesday.

“Today it is obvious that the United States is directly involved in the military actions of the Kiev regime,” he stated. “It feels like Russia is being tested to see how long it will remain patient and refrain from responding to blatantly adversarial actions and attacks. In fact, Washington is pushing the situation towards a direct confrontation of the major nuclear powers fraught with unpredictable consequences.”

“U.S. officials continue to escalate the situation, intimidating the American and international public with sham Russian “nuclear threats.” Such rhetoric twists the statements of the Russian leadership,” the Russian diplomat noted. “I would like to stress that there has been no change in the conditions when our country would use nuclear weapons. In this regard, we continue to strictly adhere to the 2014 Military Doctrine and 2020 Basic Principles of State Policy on Nuclear Deterrence. Moscow has never mentioned an expansive interpretation of these documents which can be found in the public domain”.

An opinion poll commissioned by Bloomberg News has placed Peter Obi as the leading candidate in the race to become Nigeria’s next President.

The presidential election scheduled for February next year is expected to be a three-horse race between Labour Party’s Obi, the All Progressives Congress’ Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar.

According to Bloomberg, a clear majority of respondents to the opinion poll said they intend to vote for Obi, a former Anambra state governor.

The results of the survey conducted for Bloomberg News by Premise Data Corp. were published on Wednesday as the official campaign to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari kicked off.

“Of the 92% of participants who said they’ve decided how to vote, 72% named Obi as their first choice,” Bloomberg reported.

“Of those who are still unsure, 45% said the 61-year-old is their preferred candidate.”

On its methodology, Bloomberg said Premise Data Corp. surveyed 3,973 Nigerians from September 5 – 20.

“Respondents to the app-based poll were selected from quotas developed by age, gender and location across the country’s six geopolitical zones,” the report added.

“Results were then weighted against the original quotas to ensure national representation.”
