Nigeria @ 62: Leaders Must Prioritize People's Interests As Mark Of True Independence — Chief Okeke

As Nigeria marks 62nd Independence anniversary, the APC candidate for House of Representatives, Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, High Chief Daniel Chimezie Okeke has called on the government at various levels to prioritize the interest of the citizens as such entails the true significance of independence.

This was contained in his goodwill message to Nigerians as the country celebrates its 62nd independence anniversary today.

Chief Okeke in his goodwill message to the people of the constituency and Nigerians at large expressed optimism that the country will be greater and better if the citizens on their own part remain faithful and united, Oti Maduabuchi Orieji, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Chief Dr. Okeke says.

There’s no strong or powerful nation without challenges and Nigeria is not an exception. Our journey may not have been swift, yet it doesn’t void the progress we have made so far as individual, cooperate bodies or Government. With faith, commitments and unity we shall make Nigeria better and greater collectively.

“I call on our leaders in various level of government to always do the right thing and prioritize the interest of those that voted them into power. The independence of any nation is when the voice of the citizens is heard,” Dr. Daniel Chimezie Okeke said.

Abia North Leaders Of Thought Hail Sen.Orji Kalu, Rep Nkole Over Ongoing Arochukwu/Ohafia Road Project

Leaders of Abia North senatorial district comprising of traditional rulers, town union presidents and political stakeholders have commended Rep Uko Nkole of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency and Senator representing Abia North senatorial district, Orji Uzor Kalu over the ongoing construction of Arochukwu/Ohafia federal road project.

The leaders of thought while commending Rep Nkole for attracting the project, expressed their happiness in the synergy between Nkole and Kalu in persuading the federal government to complete the project.

The leaders pointed out that Nkole and Kalu always sought their opinion in whatever they do with a view to identifying any challenges and seeking soutions to them.

ESV Olekanma, leader of the group in a statement on Saturday morning warned desperate politicians to desist from claiming the project, noting that “Uko Nkole facilitated the project and with the support of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, it is becoming a reality”.

They pledged their total and unwavering support and that of the people to Senator Kalu and Rep Nkole, in all of their future endeavours.

We have noted with dismay, the antics and desperation of a certain politician from Arochukwu Local Government Area lying to the unsuspecting public that he facilitated the ongoing construction of Arochukwu/Ohafia federal road project. All we can say is that it is a lie from the pit of hell. How can a man who spent 12 years at the national assembly with zero project except distribution of frying pans to women now have the temerity to claim that he facilitated the Arochukwu/Ohafia road? This is definitely a joke taken too far!

“For the avoidance of doubts, we the leaders of thought from Abia North senatorial district are urging the general public to disregard and reject his antics. Rep Uko Nkole and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu are the real heroes of Arochukwu/Ohafia road project. Those thinking that they can go to Abuja playing politics with human lives and propaganda would be rejected by the people of Abia North senatorial district,” the statement said.

Osun: Court Voids Oyetola’s Nomination As APC Governorship Candidate

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has nullified the nomination of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and his Deputy Governorship candidate, Benedict Alabi on the grounds that Governor Mai Mala Buni who submitted their names to INEC violated the provisions of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 82(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

On 7th April 2022, Mr Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN) had commenced a suit between the PDP v Governor Mai Mala Buni & 4 Ors. at the court challenging the nomination and sponsorship of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and his deputy as the duly nominated candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In challenging the competence of the suit, Mr Kunle Adegoke (SAN) who represented Governor Isiaka Oyetola contended, amongst other grounds that the Plaintiff did not have the locus to commence the action and that the suit was statute-barred.

In his opposing arguments, Ogunwumiju who led Muyiwa Atoyebi SAN and Ademola Abimbola submitted that the Plaintiff rightly commenced the suit under Section 285(14) (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

In his judgment, Justice Emeka Nwite agreed with the submissions of the Plaintiff’s counsel and declared as null and void, the nomination of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and Benedict Alabi by the APC.

The court also held that Governor Mai Mala Buni acted in contravention of the provision of Section 183 of the Constitution when he held dual executive positions as the Governor of Yo e State and the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of APC.

The court held that the steps or decisions taken by Governor Mai Mala Buni, including forwarding the names of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and Benedict Alabi to INEC, amounted to a nullity in law.

Counsel to Gov Oyetola, Adegoke says the verdict will be tested on appeal.

Burkina Faso’s Military Ruler Removed In Fresh Coup

Armed men who wore masks appeared on television on Friday night to declare fresh coup in Burkina Faso ejecting military leader Paul-Henri Damiba and the suspension of the country’s constitution.

The coup is the second in the West African country this year, making army Captain Ibrahim Traore the new Burkina Faso’s leader.

The announcement was made hours after report of gunfire in the capital Ouagadougou, an explosion near the presidential palace, and interruptions to state television programming.

In a scene that replicated Damiba’s own power grab in a January 24 coup, Traore appeared on television surrounded by soldiers and announced the government was dissolved, the constitution suspended and the borders closed. He declared a nightly curfew.

Traore said a group of officers who helped Damiba seize power in January had decided to remove their leader due to his inability to deal with the Islamists. Damiba ousted former President Roch Kabore for the same reason.

“Faced with the deteriorating situation, we tried several times to get Damiba to refocus the transition on the security question,” said the statement signed by Traore and read out by another officer on television.

The statement said Damiba had rejected proposals by the officers to reorganise the army and instead continued with the military structure that had led to the fall of the previous regime.

“I’m particularly happy that our security agents have stood up to the challenges of security more than ever before. And at the moment, their efforts have been pushing the effects of banditry, kidnapping and many other ills in society.

“I commend the efforts of our gallant security men and women and I want to pray for more successes in their operations,” Mrs. Buhari added.

To supplement government’s efforts towards citizens’ welfare, she said her office had put in place many programmes in areas such as agriculture, entrepreneurship, and engagement of youth and women to cushion the effects and provide alternatives.

“I, through my Aisha Buhari and Future Assured Foundation, have put in place deliberate efforts and programmes focused on improving the quality of women, youth and children.
