A former ally of the President Buhari, Buba Galadima, has faulted the national honours recently given out to some persons by the President.

He alleged that out of the 470 honourees, no fewer than 440 among them should be in prisons across the country.

ABN TV reports that Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja conferred national honours on at least 447 persons. Those on the honours list include Nigerians and those tagged “Friends of Nigeria.”

The honourees also include living and deceased Nigerians and “Foreigners”. They were conferred with awards ranging from Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger to Federal Republic Medals.

They include the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (CON); Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku (CON); business magnate, Kessington Adebutu (CFR); Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero (CFR); Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III (CFR); and a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Wole Olaonipekun (CFR), amongst others.

Others include Solomon Adeola (CON), Akinboro Aruwajoye (OON), Dr Prince Ibidapo (OON), A.V.M Ishaya Shekarri (CON), Mrs Comfort Eyitayo (OON), Ajibola Adebutu (MON), Demola Seriki (CON), Habeeb Okunola (MON), Mrs Shade Okoya (MON), Senator Tolulope Odebiyi (CON), Dr Gabriel Ogbechie (OON), Mele Kyari (OFR), Oba Babatunde Ajayi (CFR), Dr Attia Nasreddin (OFR), Mr Olusola Adeeyo (OON), Dr Richard Nyong (OON) and Mr Remi Makanjuola (OON).

They also include Senator Michael Bamidele (CON), Dr Samson Ayokunle (CON), Justice Idris Haroon (OFR), Justice Sulyman Kawu (OFR), Dr Sulaiman Onikijipa (OON), Dr Kamorun Yusuf (MON), Rear Admiral Abdul Adamu (OFR), Mr Victor Etuokwu (MON), Dr Herbert Wigwe (CON), Gershom Henshaw (MFR), Adeniyi Bashir Adewale (MFR), Prof Bolaji Owasanoye (OFR), amongst others.

Those honoured posthumously include former Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari (CFR); former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru; and Aircraft Man Matthew Oyedepo.

440 honourees should be in prison – Galadima

But speaking on Friday when he appeared on Arise TV’s The Morning Show, the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s chieftain alleged that some of those awardees were of “doubtful characters”.

According to Galadima, of the 447 people that were given these national awards, I think 440 of them need to be in prisons.

He said, “When you say Buba Galadinma, did you use engineer, Alhaji or whatsoever? I have never taken a chieftaincy title and even the Galadima, if I have my way and if not that it is on my school certificates from primary to university level, I could have dropped the word (Galadima) because that is a traditional title and I don’t need it.

“Let me tell you, of the 447 people that were given these national awards, I think 440 of them need to be in prisons rather than parading themselves as people who deserved an honour. Of what purpose is the honour? What is an honour for some of these people? It is a reward for the boys and you know General Muhammadu Buhari himself has severally accused Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, late president Musa Yar’Ádua and Goodluck Jonathan of giving awards, medals and national honours to people of doubtful characters.

“Who is it among those that he gave these national honours have impeccable characters? for me, these awards should be given to people who have retired with unblemished careers and have not been followed by either ICPC or EFCC.

“Better still, be given to those who died in national service. I will rather give it to a cook that knows how to cook better than give it to a recharge card seller turned trillionaire and that is my view.”

NSCDC Imo Command Denies Receiving Report On Organ Harvesting

Operatives of the anti-vandal squad of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Akwa Ibom State have busted an illegal fuel dump site in the Eket Local Government Area of the state, arresting two suspected oil thieves.

They also seized 130 drums loaded with illegally refined/acquired diesel, five pumping machines, three generator sets, a brown Ford Ecoline van with Registration No. AWK 583 SZ, and 27 jerry cans, in the operation led by CSC Edem Sunday in the early hours of Tuesday, 11 October 2022.

The command, in a statement on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, DSC Ekerette Friday, listed other seized items, including seven hoses of different lengths and 74 bags of DPK (kerosene) stored in 50-litre cellophane bags, amounting to about 3,700 litres.

He said that the suspects were using the illegal site to store Automative Gas Oil (Diesel) and Dual Purpose Kerosene for distribution to various parts of the state, adding that the building used for the illegal activity is a 10-room apartment located in a residential area in Ikot Udoma.

The statement reads in part, “The newly re-organised Anti-vandal squad led by CSC Edem Sunday, acting on intelligence, stormed the apartment used for the illicit act in Ikot Udoma in Eket LGA in the early hours of Tuesday, 11th October 2022.

“Two suspects were arrested and have volunteered useful statements to help with investigations. The suspects are Francis Udoh Warri, ‘M’, 55years and Uduak Sunday Johnson, ‘M’, 42 years. Other suspects within the building fled on sighting NSCDC officials.

“The building used for the illegal activity is a 10-room apartment located in a residential area in Ikot Udoma. The building was used to conceal the illegal activity going on in the backyard and the several rooms and didn’t appear as a fuel dump site where large-scale bunkering activity took place.”

Speaking to newsmen during the parade of the suspects and exhibits, the State Commandant, Suleiman Mafara, reiterated the commitment of the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr. A.A. Audi, to end the menace of oil theft, illegal bunkering/refining and adulteration in the country.

He said that the Federal Government was fighting the war from all fronts, and very soon, there would be no hiding place for these criminals.

He said, “The negative implications of these crimes are numerous. First, it is an act of economic sabotage that robs the country of huge revenue. It also degrades our environment, negatively impacting agriculture and fishing. Lastly, it is a disaster waiting to happen.”

While stating that the suspects would soon be charged in court, the state commandant of NSCDC appealed to the Akwa Ibom people to always avail the corps with credible intelligence, pointing out that crime did not take place in a vacuum.

He assured that any information volunteered to the corps will be treated with utmost confidentiality, while advising youths to engage in productive businesses.

Chief Obi Aguocha has called on the federal government to immediately release the detained leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The Labour Party candidate for Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency of Abia State was reacting to the judgement of the court of appeal in Abuja which discharged and acquitted the separatist leader.

In a release on Thursday, Aguocha, the Udo Ji Agu-Ohuhu and Ogwumabiri Umuahia while expressing gladness over the court ruling advised the federal government not to appeal judgement.

“I am of the strong view that this court’s verdict has provided the Federal Government a legal platform for a political solution to address some of the issues agitating the minds of the people of South East,” he said.

He also advised security agencies against re-arresting Nnamdi Kanu when released but all he enjoy his freedom, urging everyone to remain calm and prayerful in the coming days for the life and peaceful release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has revealed other allegations against the Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, saying the party leader lacked integrity.

He alleged that the PDP chairman also received double pay for a single project.

“If people know what we know, if we release what we have, Ayu’s children will go to him and say we are no longer your children,” Wike said in his ongoing live media chat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

When asked about the N1 billion he said Ayu allegedly collected and that there has been no reaction from the national chairman, Wike said, “There cannot be any comment. He (Ayu) cannot say anything. Look, I am the governor of Rivers state and I don’t just come out to speak.

“Let Ayu say he did not collect N1 billion. In fact, let me also tell you, Ayu collected N100 million naira from a governor that he was going to renovate our democratic institution and then he (Ayu) went back to the PDP NWC and took the same N100 million naira for doing the same work.

“What kind of system is that? I am telling you all these are facts. Let him (Ayu) say no first and I will tell you (those he collected money from).”

He added, “A leader must be a man of integrity. And I have realised that people find it hard to have that (integrity) lately. You a presenting a man (Ayu) who lacked integrity as chairman of the party. Somebody that wants to lead a campaign to take the reigns of government?

“What is the problem with what we are asking of Ayu? We are saying let there be equity, let there be fairness and justice. But if you don’t want it that way then you are the one causing the crisis (in the party) and that shows you (Ayu) don’t have leadership skills because this is the time to show it. This is the time to show leadership skills on the part of those who are leaders of the party.”

ASUU Says Its Issues With The FG Is Not Fully Addressed

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Friday called off its eight-month-old strike.

However, the union in a press statement made available to reporters noted that the issues in its disputes with the Federal Government were not well addressed.

The press release, which was signed by the National President of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, however, hailed the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The statement partly read, “The National Executive Council of ASUU held an emergency meeting at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja, on Thursday, October 13, 2022”.

The union in its statement further noted that the Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Chris Ngige, took the striking lecturers to court.

“The National Industrial Court, in its wisdom, gave an order compelling ASUU to resume work pending the determination of the substantive suit. Given the nature of the order, and in the opinion of our counsel, there was the need to appeal the interlocutory injunction granted against our union at the Court of Appeal.

“The Court of Appeal acknowledged the validity of the grounds of the union’s appeal but still upheld the order of the lower court and ordered our union to comply with the ruling of the lower court as condition precedent for the appeal to be heard.

“NEC noted the series of meetings with the leadership of the House of Representatives led by the Hon. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as intervention efforts of other well-meaning Nigerians both within and outside the government and the progress made so far.”

Speaking further on the status of negotiations, the union said, “While appreciating the commendable efforts of the leadership of the House of Representatives and other patriotic Nigerians who waded into the matter, NEC noted with regrets that the issues in dispute were yet to be satisfactorily addressed.

“However, as a law-abiding union and in deference to appeals by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and in recognition of the efforts of Hon. Gbajabiamila, and other well-meaning Nigerians, ASUU NEC resolved to suspend the strike action embarked upon on February 14, 2022. Consequently, all members of ASUU are hereby directed to resume all services hitherto withdrawn with effect from 12:01 on Friday, October 14, 2022.”

2023: PDP Won’t Accept Compromised Elections, Says National Chairman

Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party has advised the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government against compromising the integrity of the 2023 general election.

He stressed that the major opposition party does not want to be short-changed again.

This is even as he called on the European Union to send a high-level and large-sized observer mission to Nigeria to observe and monitor the 2023 general election, given the country’s large population.

Ayu stated while receiving the European Union Election Exploratory Mission to Nigeria led by Mrs. Mette Bakken, at the PDP National Headquarters.

In a statement signed by, Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the PDP National Chairman, Simon Imobo-Tswam, Ayu said, “We are prepared as a party to do the needful as far as the 2023 general election is concerned. But we are worried about the tendency and capacity of the State to manipulate critical technologies to our disadvantage. We need to pay close attention so that we are not short-changed again.

“There are security challenges in some states, I think six or so states. We hope the government will stamp out the insecurity there early enough for elections to be held there with transparent outcomes. We will no longer accept questionable harvests of votes from inaccessible areas.

“In the past, those were areas where the ruling APC did what they love doing best: bringing votes that subverted the will of the people. Even though we are going to police our votes, it’s important that the EU sends a large number of observers ahead of the elections.”

He went on: “We need a large EU Observer Mission here. We don’t want token missions. This is because Nigeria is such a big country, with some states being bigger than some EU Member-States. And we need, among the observers, people with technical capacities too. Election observation has shifted from manual to technology. You need to keep talking to the government and critical stakeholders so that the APC does not subvert the democratic will.

“We appreciate the efforts of the EU and thank the Observer Missions for their continued interest in the democratization process in Nigeria which is close to 25 years. We want the world to know that what is happening in Nigeria is democratic, transparent, and credible.”

Although Ayu said the PDP was prepared for the 2023 elections and was ready to police the positive outcomes, he expressed fears that the elections might be compromised, with the ruling APC allegedly bearing undue pressures on the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“We do not want to be short-changed again. We believe we won the presidency in the 2019 general election. We were injured in 2019, and we don’t want a second injury in 2023.”

On whether freedom of expression was being stifled, Ayu said, “To the best of my knowledge, Nigerians are very vibrant people. Even under military rule, we spoke our minds. It was through the process of speaking our minds that we formed this political party to make sure that the military handed over power.

“So, it is impossible to suppress the freedom of expression in Nigeria. The freedom space is still open. What the government in power is doing is denying us access to public spaces to hold our rallies. Even at our convention, we had to navigate and put pressure before we got a venue here in Abuja. That must stop.”

Speaking earlier, the leader of the Mission, Mrs. Bakken, said the EU Mission was in Nigeria to interface with relevant government bodies, Non-Governmental Organisations; and, in line with the EU Methodology, look at the possibility of deploying the EU Observer Mission for the scheduled 2023 general election.

Besides Bakken, who is of the Democracy and Electoral Observation Division (European Action External Service), other members of the EU Delegation included Frederick Schumman and Kairi Kasmann, both of the European Commission Foreign Policy Instrument. Members of the Exploratory Mission, who arrived in Nigeria on October 10, 2022, will be on the ground till October 25, 2022.

Other members of the PDP National Working Committee at the event were the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu; the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba; the National Treasurer, Ahmed Mohammed, and the National Auditor, Okechukwu Daniel.

The Zamfara Government, on Friday, announced a total lockdown in Anka, Bukkuyum, and Gummi Local Government Areas (LGAs) following the resurgence of bandit attacks on communities.

The lockdown is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara on Friday in Gusau.

”The government announces a lockdown in nine major towns to stop the spate of the attacks on such communities in the affected areas.

”Theese are Yarkofoji, Birnin Tudu, Rini, Gora Namaye, Janbako, Faru, Kaya, Boko and Mada towns.

”Government also announced the closing down of markets in Danjibga and Bagega as well as Colony to Lambar Boko Road, Bakura to Lambar Damri Road, and Mayanchi- Daki Takwas to Gummi Road.

”Others are the Daki Takwas to Zuru Road, Kucheri- Bawaganga – Wanke Road, Magami to Dangulbi Road, and Gusau to Magami Road.

‘The measures were taken to facilitate the efforts of security operatives in flushing out criminal elements in those areas,” the government said.

Gov. Bello Matawalle also ordered the immediate suspension of all APC meetings and activities as part of his government concern and sympathy for the affected people and communities.

“Stakeholders invited for the Friday APC Stakeholders’ Meeting are hereby advised to hold on for a new date for the meeting.

“Furthermore, government has suspended all political activities in the state till further notice.

“Political meetings and gatherings at individual residences are also banned with immediate effect,” Dosara added.

The state government said the decision is without prejudice to anyone, is intended to arrest the situation before it went out of control.

“Government is saddened and worried about the resurgence of the activities of bandits and the recent killings of some innocent people in Gusau, Tsafe, Gummi, Bukkuyum, Anka Bungudu, Maru, Maradun, and Kaura Namoda local government areas.

“Government is also touched by the killings of some of our gallant security operatives who lost their lives in our defense.

“Government, therefore, condoled with the families of the victims of the bandits’ attacks and prayed for the repose of the departed souls”.

The state government directed security operatives to deal with those found violating the orders.

The government of Kaduna State has stated that it has concluded arrangements to build a dam on the 800,000 hectares forests between Buruku and Birnin-Gwari towns, which had, over the years, remained a den for terrorists and other related criminals.

This was made known by the Director-General, of Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Agency, Ismail Umaru-Dikko at the ongoing 7th edition of the Kaduna Investment Submit.

According to the KASUPDA boss, the dam project will not only address the security challenges in the state but permanently end flooding in the Kaduna metropolis.

He said, “From Buruku to Birnin-Gwari where we have been experiencing armed robbery from time immemorial. It moved to cattle rustling and now kidnapping and banditry.

“So, we feel something must happen there. We have a very massive land that has never been utilized there and that is why we cannot just fold our arms and allow criminals to continue to take advantage of the blessed land.

“So, we came up with the master plan and discovered that from Buruku to Birnin-Gwari, we have close to 800,000 hectares of land which is about two states in another part of the country. We are creating a dam there.

“Presently, Kaduna is just like drainage for the water, which is coming from Bauchi, passing through here to Shiroro Dam. The water sometimes causes flood here. So, as a way of finding a lasting solution, we will build the dam, save the water, address the flood problem and harvest the water during the dry season for irrigation farming.

“This we believe will also create jobs, most of the youths rushing to study business administration and accounting in the universities can go into agriculture.

“We will encourage the youths into agriculture and that is why we brought the OCP fertilizer to partner with the government in this direction. We also brought NEXIM Bank to see how we can export the products from here in a big way.”

Meanwhile, the Kaduna Capital Territory Administration signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry Mines, and Agriculture to establish a film village within the Kaduna International Trade Fair.

Speaking on the planned Film Village, Administrator of Kaduna Capital Territory Authority, Hafiz Bayero, said the partnership was not going to build new structures but leverage on the old Trade Fair Complex structures which are currently under-utilized to refocus them.

“We are looking to have a space in the trade fair complex, where people can come film movies and do their pre and post-production and also move the movie to the international film market,” he added.

Putin Urges “Goodwill” To Resolve Global Conflicts, Without Referencing War In Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged the use of “goodwill” to settle conflicts around the world, without making a reference to the war in Ukraine.

“Everyone has goodwill, and we need to use this goodwill to the maximum” in resolving any conflicts, Putin said while speaking to the leaders at the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit.

“We must strive to find ways out of the current situation, wherever it arises,” he added.

Putin also said that Russia “welcomes the mediation efforts of anyone, as long as they are directed at calming the situation, to the benefit all participants in the conflicts.” 

“This also applies to our partners from the US and Europe,” he added.

The event in the Kazakh capital of Astana is being attended by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Since launching its invasion of Ukraine in February, the Kremlin has ruptured diplomatic ties with Kyiv and its Western allies.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree formally ruling out potential negotiations with Putin. It came in response to Putin’s announcement that he would illegally annex four regions in Ukraine, in a move widely condemned by international leaders.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has given one month deadline to federal government to approve his letter to procure AK-47 license or will seek the advice of his people on way to go.

The governor stated this on Thursday during the passing out parade of second batch of the State Volunteer Communty Guards held at IBB Square, Makurdi.

Ortom said that he had applied for approval of AK 47 riffles license but regretted that over three months he was yet to get response from federal government.

According to him, “I have on behalf of the Benue State Government applied to the responsible Federal Government Agency for approval to procure automatic weapons particularly AK47 assault riffles to further strengthen your logistic support base and your defense capability.

“I am still awaiting approval from the Federal Government to deal accordingly,” adding,.”If there is no reply in the next one month, I will revert to my people to give advice on what to do because federal government is complicit on the issue of herders attacks on the state

While stating that state governments and federal government were working towards moving from community policing to State Police, the governor said that when this happens, the personnel will automatically transit to the state police.

Ortom admonished the personnel to remain apolitical, conscientious, courteous, vigilant and strong to stand firm and protect the people.

To effectively combat crime, the governor said his administration had procured motor vehicles and motorcycles as well as other tools to ease their operation.

One thousand, five hundred personnel have so far been trained under the State Volunteer Communty Guards while the governor promised to up the figure to 10,000 before he leaves office in 2023
