NDLEA Nab 37 Suspects, Seizes Over 345kg Of Drugs In Edo

A suspected drug kingpin, Damion Onuoha, has been arrested during a raid at Elele Alimini town in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State, The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has disclosed.

The Rivers State NDLEA Commander, Ahmed Mamuda, made the disclosure in a statement issued on Tuesday and made available to journalists in Port Harcourt.

According to the statement, the suspect, aged 40, was arrested at about 3.30 pm on Monday with 1.6 kg of white and brown Methamphetamine, while the sum of N650,700 was also, recovered from him.

The statement, which was signed by the spokesman for the state command, Emmanuel Ogbumgbada, also said the command arrested 21 suspects, including two females.

The statement added that “Onuoha, who hails from Elele Alimini town in the state is in the command’s detention facility and is the subject of an investigation.

“Meanwhile, in the month of October 2022, the command successfully convicted 21 drug dealers at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, and the convicts are serving various jail terms at the Correctional Service Centre, in Port Harcourt.

The command also arrested 21 suspects, comprising 19 males and two females, with a total seizure of 424.72kg of illicit drugs such as cocaine, heroin, cannabis Sativa, and methamphetamine also known as ‘Mkpurunmiri.’

“Others are psychotropic substances such as tramadol and swivel. The State Commander, Ahmed Mamuda, enjoins the people 0f Rivers to be on the lookout for clandestine laboratories where methamphetamine production may be taking place and urges urgent action so that, together, we can root out the drug menace from our society,” he said

All Kebbi PDP Senators Decamp To APC

Over one thousand five hundred supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ilirowa village, Buji Local Government, Jigawa State.

Receiving the decampees on Monday, the State Assembly member representing Birnin Kudu constituency Siraja Muhammad Kantoga appreciated their decision to dump the PDP.

The member, who was represented by his co-ordinator, Nura Suleiman Jidawa, assured them of equal treatment like any other member of the party.

He, however, urged them to work hard for the success of the party in the upcoming 2023 general elections.

“Ilirowa village is one of the strongholds of the PDP and with this development, I am sure there will be no more PDP in the area,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the decampees, Malam Lasisi said that they decided to dump the PDP for the APC based on its good policies and programs for the development of the State and the country.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has stated that Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike is not the custodian of votes in the state.

Wike had previously stated that he would never support Atiku’s presidential campaign in 2023.

He and five other PDP governors were dissatisfied with Atiku and the party’s leadership after he lost the presidential primaries.

The governor accused Atiku of endorsing Iyorchia Ayu for the position of National Chairman of the party.

Wike and other party governors have stated that a specific region cannot produce the PDP’s National Chairman and presidential candidate.

The governor also accused Atiku of sidelining him in the constitution of his presidential campaign council.

Reacting, Atiku said Wike can’t manipulate votes in Rivers State following the introduction of electronic voting.

Speaking through the spokesperson of his campaign council, Dino Melaye, he said it’s wrong for Wike to think he would fail in Rivers State.

He stressed that the governor can’t decide who the people of the State would vote for.

“It’s very fallacious for you to think that because that governor is not with your candidate he will lose the State.

“I will cast your mind back to a day when you sat down and wrote results for a State. We are not in that era any longer. With the advent of BVAS and electronic transmission of results, in Rivers State, for example, Governor Wike is not the custodian or he is not to appropriate the votes of Rivers.

“If you now go to elections as it’s now with electoral reforms, the grassroots matters; the electorate matter; the youth and women matter. That is why Atiku is speaking directly to the conscience of the electorate,” Melaye told Channels TV.

EFCC Says Chairman Bawa Did Not Commit Contempt Of Court

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Wednesday insisted that its Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, did not disregard the order of the court.

The clarification was made in a statement the commission posted on its Facebook page.

The commission opined that the ruling has created a ‘wrong impression of the person of the Executive Chairman of the EFCC as encouraging impunity’.

It stated that Bawa was not the commission’s boss when the order was given in 20218.

The commission equally noted that Bawa had released the Range Rover in question to the Applicant on the 27th of June, 2022.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, received with shock, a report of the ruling by Justice Chizoba Oji of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja committing the Executive Chairman for contempt over the failure to comply with a November 21st, 2018 order of the court directing the Commission to return seized assets comprising a Range Rover (Supercharge) and the sum of N40, 000,000.00 (Forty Million Naira) to the applicant.

“This ruling is surprising as it creates a wrong impression of the person of the Executive Chairman of the EFCC as encouraging impunity. As far as the relationship between the EFCC and the judiciary is concerned, The Executive Chairman, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa has been an apostle of rule of law, due process, and close collaboration between the two institutions in justice administration. As an investigator, and the only Chief Executive of a law enforcement agency who regularly goes to court, the Executive Chairman will not tolerate impunity or disregard any lawful orders of court.

“Abdulrasheed Bawa, in his capacity as Executive Chairman of the EFCC since March 5, 2022, did not disregard any order of court. For the benefit of the public, the said order of the FCT High Court was given on November 21, 2018, three years before Abdulrasheed became EFCC Chairman.  This fact is germane as the contempt process is quasi-criminal in nature and must be served on the person involved. In this case, Bawa as incumbent chairman of the EFCC, was neither served form 48 nor form 49.

“Despite this fact, the Executive Chairman,  upon being aware of the said order of November 21st 2018 had released the Range Rover in question to the Applicant on the 27th of June, 2022 and had approved the process of the release of the remaining N40m.

“Taking into cognizance the procedural lapse in the contempt proceedings the commission has initiated a process to set aside the entire contempt proceedings and committal of the Executive Chairman for contempt.

“Despite the discomfort of this ruling which is seemingly promoted by misinformation, the commission remains committed to working closely with the judiciary in furtherance of the fight against economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.”

Bayern Munich provide Update On Mane’s Injury Ahead Of World Cup

Bayern Munich has provided an update on Sadio Mane’s injury, which occurred just 11 days before the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Bundesliga champions are hopeful Mane has avoided serious injury after picking up a knock in their 6-1 win over Werder Bremen on Tuesday evening.

Bayern is currently leading the Bundesliga standings by a four-point margin after their victory over Bremen.

However, Mane’s injury overshadowed the outcome because it took the 30-year-old player 15 minutes into the match to suffer a knee injury that required treatment.

Leroy Sane, a former Man City player, took over for the former Liverpool star as he walked straight down the tunnel for additional medical attention.

Speaking after the match at his post-match press conference, Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann hoped Mane’s injury is not a big one.

Nagelsmann also said he is expecting a further update on Mane’s injury on Wednesday.

“I didn’t see him after the game, I hope it’s not a big injury. But I don’t know at the moment, the Bayern boss said. ‘We’ll see tomorrow and then give an update,” Nagelsmann said at his post-match press conference.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s assistant coach Dino Toppmöller offered a somewhat more positive update on Mane’s injury.

Toppmöller told reporters after the game: “He got hit on the nerve in the knee area. Apparently, it’s nothing that bad.”

Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has advocated for the passage of the bill establishing the commission and tribunal of electoral offences.

According to him, the bill’s passage would relieve the commission of the burden of prosecuting electoral offences, which he described as one of the most difficult jobs assigned to the commission and one in which it has not been successful.

Yakubu told the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters that if passed, the bill, like the new Electoral Act 2022 as amended, will contribute to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.

The INEC chairman, who urged the legislature to pass the bill and submit it for assent before the end of the 9th National Assembly, also stated that if successful, it would be another significant contribution to our electoral process.

Yakubu said;

Some of the progress referred to by the chairman of this committee owes a lot to the new Electoral Act. It has really strengthened our hands. I also like what Honourable Sam Onuigbo said; and the comment made by Honourable Abonta about the involvement of Commissioner Festus Okoye on the technical committee for the last election. We have nominated the same person for the Electoral Offences Commission and Tribunal Bill. I would like to appreciate you for that.You have relieved the commission, by the time you passed this bill, of one of the most difficult jobs assigned to the commission, and which we have not successfully implemented, which is the prosecution of electoral offences. With the establishment of the commission, essentially by the efforts of members – because it is a private bill, not an executive bill, we have also taken another step towards ensuring free, fair and credible elections.I pray that the process will be concluded and submitted for assent and be assented to before the lifespan of this Assembly. This will be another solid contribution to our electoral process. If you successfully do so, you would have done what the Uwais recommendation did not achieve; what the Lemu Committee did not achieve; and what the Nnamani Committee did not achieve. So, we look forward to and place on record our appreciation to the National Assembly.

He praised the National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters for passing the Electoral Act 2022, calling it “the most progressive Electoral Act ever in the history of Nigerian elections.”Aisha Dukku, Chairman of the Committee on Electoral Matters, congratulated INEC on the successful conduct of the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun.

No Use Of Public Facilities For Rally Without Permission, Abia Govt Warns Political Parties

Abia State government has warned political parties in the state to desist from invasion of school facilities, stadia, and other public valuable premises for rallies without obtaining permission from relevant agencies.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barr. Eze Chikamnayo in a statement on Tuesday expressed dissatisfaction with the alleged vandalisation and degradation of the facilities, saying the activities of the political organizations undermine the efforts of the government bring succour to pupils in Abia schools.

The government pledged to continue in its efforts to promote participatory democracy and allows all citizens to exercise their civil rights but only within the ambit of the law.

“Whereas the Abia State Government, as a staunch promoter of participatory democracy and Democratic freedoms, will continue to give necessary support to all citizens to exercise their rights, it must be pointed out that the enjoyment of such Constitutional rights must be conducted within the ambits of the law.

“Public Utilities, School Facilities, Stadiums and Valuable Public Premises are properties of the people of Abia State entrusted into the care of Government. Therefore, no responsible Government will stand by and watch such Facilities as they are willfully vandalised and degraded by sadistic elements with malicious interests disguising as politicians. The unscrupulous acts of these lawless individuals and groups jeopardizes the efforts of Government at all levels to provide succour to our children and citizens for whom those Facilities were established,” the Commissioner said.

The political parties are therefore to obtain written permission from the education Secretariat of the local government as well as the chairman of the LGA in addition to notification of the security agencies before using the facilities.

“In view of the foregoing, henceforth, in addition to notifying the Security Agencies, the written consent of the Education Secretary of a Local Government and the Executive Chairman of that local Government must be duly sought and obtained before the use of any Primary School Premises. Groups and individuals seeking to use any Secondary School should direct their applications and obtain their permit via the Secondary Education Management Board and the relevant Local Government Chairman.

“Similarly, because of the sensitive and expensive nature of the modern turf and equipment recently installed in our Stadiums, the consent of the Abia State Ministry of Sports and the relevant Local Government and State Authorities must be formally sought and obtained. Applicants wishing to use the Aba Stadium and others must give adequate guarantee to take responsibility for any damage sustained as a result of their activities before being allowed to use that prestigious Monument,” the statement added.

It was very shocking to listen to Labour Party announce that they are going to use the Ngwa High School premises on a Thursday morning by 8 am when students are supposed to be in active session for the flag-off of Dr. Alex Otti’s governorship campaign in Abia state.

To every sane Abian who understands the importance of education and cares about the safety and well-being of our children the attempt on its own amounts to gross abuse of privilege and flagrant disregard and disrespect for the rights of the students and their teachers, how can any human being contemplate holding a political rally with all the dangers and insecurity associated with such political events in a school compound when students are holding lectures, it is insensitive, it is wicked, it is an abuse of the privilege of free political air that the government of Governor Ikpeazu is offering and should be condemned by every well-meaning Abian.

Apart from the destruction of facilities in the schools where such rallies are held, people also defecate and mess up the school premises and thereafter abandon it for the students and management of the school to use their active study time to engage in the clean up of their premises.

In this period of insecurity in our nation, it is high risk for anybody to hold political rallies when schools are in session as the security of students cannot be guaranteed under such circumstances and anybody who holds such rallies is an enemy of the public.

Dr. Otti should not place his ambition above the security and future of our children and should be sensitive enough to consider the distraction and danger such a program will cause to the students.

Dr. Otti should please place the education and lives of our children above his personal and political interest if he truly cares for Abia and Abians.

I am therefore pleading with the Labour Party to please consider the lives of the students and their teachers and change the venue of the rally or please reschedule the event to a time and date when the students won’t be in session.

An Igbo group known as Eziokwu Bu Ndu (Ofo n’Ogo) which is sympathetic to the Biafra course, said it has dragged the five South East governors and some other Igbo leaders to two popular shrines in the country over the plight of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu’s predicament.

The other Igbo leaders said to have been dragged before Ogoni Zodere Shrine in Bidere Community in Rivers State and Okija Shrine in Anambra State, are Willy Obiano, former governor of Anambra State, and Rochas Okoroacha former governor of Imo State.

A release by the chairman of the group, Iheukwumere Emele said all the “Afa” and “Ugiri” performed by some seers, pointed to the fact that the said Igbo leaders were responsible for Kanu’s problems since they had not made any move individually or collectively to effect the IPOB leader’s release.

“The Afa and Ugiri performed by some seers in a community in Abia state, pointed to the fact that the so-mentioned Igbo leaders are behind Kanu’s problem; since they have not made any move for his release”.

Emele made reference to the Igbo adage, “Onuru ube nwanne agbala Oso“, saying as Igbo leaders, the past and serving governors ought to have made moves for the release of Kanu long before now.

“‘Onuru ube nwanne agbala oso’ is an Igbo adage that made it clear we should be our brother’s keepers and it appears these Igbo leaders are not acting in line with that time-tested adage in the case of Nnamdi Kanu”

Emele employed the gods of their ancestors to be Judges over the IPOB leader’s case.

The governorship candidate of Action Peoples Party, APP in Abia State, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC officials in the state are being induced to fraudulently sell voters cards of Abians to some political parties.

Mascot Uzor-Kalu, therefore, urged the electoral umpire and its officials in Abia to avoid being used to truncate the will of the masses in an election expected to produce a new governor next year.

A statement on Sunday by Ukoha Aladdin, the Special Adviser to Mascot Uzor Kalu on Political Affairs said the Action Peoples party secretariat and Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu Campaign Council have been informed about the development.

He said, “By this action, we are asking that INEC Abia state should not allow itself to be used to perpetrate this act of insubordination for it is a breach of confidence against ABIANS that is culpable of causing break down of law and order in the state.

“Also, we are asking every ABIAN and resident of Abia that registered for their permanent voters’ card to go to their collection center to collect the same, and in an event that the INEC Abia state cannot provide their voters’ card, they should report the situation to the nearest police station and the DSS,” the statement read in part.
