Ahead of the 2023 general election, two groups campaigning for the election of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, in Abia State, have adopted Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for the Abia South senatorial sea.

The groups also adopted the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prof. Uche Ikonne, as the consensus governorship candidate in the state.

Speaking after endorsing the three candidates during a meeting of 17 council area chapters, in Aba, the groups; Peter Obi Grassroots Movement, POGM, and the Obidient Across Parties Alliance, OAPA, Abia State chapter further urged the people of the state to collect their Permanent Voters Card, PVC, to elect Ikonne and Ikpeazu in the election.

The groups which comprise members of different parties vowed to deliver Obi, as the next president of Nigeria in 2023.

Coordinator of the Peter Obi Grassroots Movement, Comrade Chetachi Ikpe, explained that as they are rooting for Obi to emerge president, Prof. Uche Ikonne to become the next Governor of Abia State as well as Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as the next Senator to represent Abia South Senatorial district.

He stated that their choices are based on the facts on the ground, especially the achievements of the trio whom he described as leaders with milk of human kindness and goal-oriented servants of the people.

The Coordinator, OBidient Across Parties Alliance, Chief Ndubueze Obiakwata said that his group is not interested in the name of any political party but in the performance and track records of individual candidates.

We are not interested in PDP, APC, APGA or Labour Party. We are here to ensure that individuals who understand what leadership is all about are being voted into power. Nobody can question the integrity of Mr Peter Obi. In Abia State, we do not need many words when we talk about Governor Okezie Ikpeazu. We all have seen his handwork and we only need to push him to do more.

“As for Professor Uche Ikonne, his records in the academic field, especially administration, are clear. He is expected to build on so many good foundations put in place by Dr Okezie Ikpeazu. So, we’re going with these three as far as Abia is concerned.”

The two groups equally charged Abia people to go all out at the ward levels from the 12th to the 18th of November and check their details as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will begin the ward-level display of the permanent voters’ list.

Those who registered during the last voter registration exercise should go and check their names and do their claims and objections to help INEC make necessary amendments needed in the voters list before the final list will be out. We need to get our voters card; that’s the only weapon we can use to elect our chosen leaders. Obi, Ikonne and Ikpeazu are men of proven integrity. They have a date with history in Nigeria, Abia State and Abia South senatorial district in 2023.”

Abia Government Says It's Not Against Peter Obi's Visit To Aba For Rally

Abia State government has said it is not against Peter Obi’s visit to the state where he is scheduled to hold a rally on Thursday or any other presidential candidate for that matter but expressed concern that it does not want the peaceful atmosphere to be detailed.

The government in a statement on Thursday signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barr. Eze Chikamnayo said the state Governor has a profile of political tolerance and enhancing democratic participation and will not stop the visit of Peter Obi for his political engagements.

The government, therefore, called for the maintenance of the existing peace and stability in the state and urged for proper use of the facility, even as schools remain in the section at the planned venue for the rally, the Ngwa High School Aba.

The statement read in part, “That the venue of the Proposed Rally, Ngwa High School, Aba is one of the Government Schools recently released to some Religious Institutions and other Groups on the probational basis as contained in the Executive Council Resolution authorising the exercise. Thus, the control, use, and or misuse of such privilege by any of the beneficiaries will determine Government decision as it affects such Institutions.

“Therefore, those ignorant political pretenders purporting that Ngwa High School is an independent, self-governing island within the Abia State territory are only hallucinating. Their purported approval from their misguided moles will only lead them to oblivion as there can never exist two Governments within the elected authority in Abia State.

“That all Schools in Abia operate a uniform calendar as per resumption, mid-term breaks, and conclusion of terms as approved and supervised by the Ministry of Education, Abia State. Willful alteration of the such calendar to pander to vested political interests by any Institution within the State will be met with commensurate sanctions.

“That management of Ngwa High School or any other public Institution entrusted by Government with the solemn responsibility of protecting the overall interest of Abia Children cannot recklessly purport to unilaterally discharge that responsibility without first obtaining the written approval of the government through the relevant supervising Ministry in accordance with extant laws.

“Regrettably, a certain diminutive, perennial Governorship Candidate whose questionable antecedents in the mismanagement of public institutions is common knowledge in Abia State is latching in on the genuine aspiration of Mr Peter Obi to instigate unrest and garner undeserved attention. This desperate individual together with his bitter gang of political dropouts knowing that they lack integrity, reputation and capacity are creating an erroneous impression that the goodwill enjoyed by Mr Peter Obi and other Presidential Candidates from the Government and people of Abia State can be used as a smokescreen to cover their notoriety and lack of acceptable.

“In view of the foregoing and in deference to His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, Government hereby announce that the relevant agencies involved in the implementation of Government Directives should accord our visitor, Mr Obi, and his entourage our traditional hospitality and protection during their rally today.

“At the appropriate time and in accordance with the law, Government will deal decisively with all violations of extant laws and regulations through appropriate channels.

“As for the worn-out antics of the emissaries of confusion masquerading as politicians, our message is simple: The people-oriented administration of Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu will always take the higher ground. We shall not be provoked. We shall not be stampeded. We have a duty of utmost good faith. We will continue to lead from the front.”

Arrest, Put EFCC Chairman Bawa In Kuje Prison Now – HURIWA Tells IGP

EFCC Says Chairman Bawa Did Not Commit Contempt Of Court

Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA) has called for the arrest and imprisonment of Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The rights group is backing the call for the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to without further delay, put the EFCC boss behind bars.

Recall that the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja during the week, ordered that Bawa be committed to Kuje correctional centre for contempt of court, pending the setting aside of the order.

HURIWA wondered why Bawa, who should be at a correctional centre, is still functioning and signing documents as the Chairman of the agency against the court order.

HURIWA made the call in a statement released by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, on Wednesday.

The statement follows the position of a legal practitioner, Maxwell Okpara, who said that Bawa remained a convict until the court order was vacated.

Commenting on the calls for respect for the rule of law, HURIWA said: “We, therefore, call on the IGP to enforce the law and enjoin the rest of the law enforcement agencies who are fond of exalting themselves above the laws of the land to learn from Bawa’s fate.

“The EFCC Chairman should also on his own volition report at Kuje prison if the IGP has disobeyed the Court order and failed to do the needful by conveying him to the prison premises pending the hearing and determination of his application for stay of execution.”

Petrol To Cost N410 Without Subsidy, Says NNPC

Fuel Price Hike, Scarcity Trail Tinubu’s Subsidy Removal Announcement
Fuel Subsidy

Without the current subsidy on petrol, the actual importation and retail cost would be at N410 per litre as market conditions take price to thrice of N170 pump price, said the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari.

ABN TV reported on Tuesday that marketers are pushing for over N200/l as some stations in Abuja city centre sold for N180/l, while others in the outskirts and neighbouring states sell for over N200.

The petrol scarcity and queues have continued on Wednesday with fewer vehicles plying the city roads.

He stated this yesterday at the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Summit organised by the House of Representatives in Abuja on Wednesday,

He said, “It is not possible for you to buy fuel at N170 when your actual cost is thrice that value. For instance, today, when PMS comes into this country, we transfer to marketers at N113 per litre for us to ensure N165 at the pump, so you must sell at N113 to them to be able to deliver at N165.

“That means whatever the cost, anything after that value, that is subsidy. Somebody has to pay for it. Everyone knows the price of PMS around the world. There is nowhere today that you can land a litre of PMS to the pumps at the N445 exchange rate, it is not possible.”

Speaking further, the NNPC boss said: “In some places, you are subsidizing up to N290 on every litre. With this regime, it is impossible for you to avoid all the wrong things that are happening. Round tripping, cross-border smuggling, document forgery-anywhere you have arbitrage, you will have these issues.”

Kyari further justified the engagement of private security contractors to secure its facilities in an effort to fight against oil theft in the country, saying it has paid off.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the summit was important for legislators and policymakers to gain valuable insights into the issues and achieve clarity on the actions needed to be taken to achieve greater transparency and accountability in the oil and gas industry.

Resident Representative of Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation, Marija Peran, urged for more transparency in the oil and gas sector saying Nigeria, the biggest producer of oil and gas in Subsaharan Africa is at the same time one of the lowest ranking countries in the UN Human Development Index.

APC Thugs Attacked Atiku Campaign Train In Borno, Says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the “cowardly violent attack” on Atiku Abubakar’s campaign train in Maiduguri, the Borno capital.

The opposition alleged that the Wednesday incident was carried out by armed thugs “sponsored by the disconcerted All Progressives Congress (APC)”.

A statement by National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba said the motorcade made its way into Maiduguri amidst thunderous cheers.

The spokesperson noted that the ruling APC was frustrated, bitter, and envious of the overwhelming popularity of the PDP and Atiku.

Ologunagba said the party has information about how agents of certain APC leaders mobilized hoodlums to escalate violence.

The plot, he asserted, was to stop the PDP from holding its rally, adding that over 70 persons were injured and hospitalized.

“Hundreds of APC’s armed thugs stationed at major roundabouts and intersections in Maiduguri unleashed violence on the PDP convoy and innocent citizens.

“This attack is consistent with APC’s habitual resort to violence in the face of rejection as also witnessed in the attack on the PDP rally in Kaduna State on October 17.”

Iogunagba said APC’s “barbaric” behaviour is contrary to the Peace Accord signed on September 28 and constitutes a danger to democracy, the electoral process, and the 2023 elections.

The PDP commended “the brave and courageous people of Borno” for resisting “the APC thugs” and ensuring the success of Atiku’s rally.

FG Should Stop Humiliating ASUU, Says Ohuabunwa
President Buhari

The Federal Government has again debunked claims that the nation would experience food shortage in 2023 because of the recent flooding in the country.

Minister of Agriculture, Mohammad Abubakar, disclosed this on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House.

He stated that the government is working to decrease inflation rate and ensure food security primarily through subsidising fertilizer, improving production and prevent smuggling among other strategies.

In the last two months, houses and farmlands have been submerged in Lagos, Yobe, Borno, Taraba, Adamawa, Edo, Delta, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Imo, Abia States, and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), over 600 people have died and millions displaced by devastating floods that hit more than 20 states in the last few months.

The 2022 floods have attracted international “solidarity”. In a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, King Charles III sympathised with Nigeria over the “devastating” incidents.

2023 Presidency: Tinubu’s Achievements Will Aid His Victory — Lawan

Ahmad Lawan May Pick Tinubu As Running Mate - NWC Member Reveals

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima will win the 2023 presidential election going by their achievements respectively, Nigeria’s President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan has said.

Lawan made this assertion in his goodwill message at a special dinner organised for patrons and advisors of the APC at the Campaign Headquarters in Abuja.

The campaign patrons and advisers are made up of former governors, National Assembly members, ministers, accomplished politicians, and former senior appointees of the Federal Government.

In his address, Lawan attributed his confidence in Tinubu and Shettima to their achievements in their various political journeys.

He said, “The APC is on its way to winning the elections with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima who are great Nigerians that have achieved a lot in their various political journeys.”

Addressing the participants, Tinubu described the campaign patrons as politicians of repute who have worked hard for the party and sacrificed so much for the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by Dr. Makut Macham, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Director General of APC Presidential Campaign Council, Gov Simon Lalong, Tinubu expressed delight that they are fully behind him and his vision to give Nigeria a ‘Renewed Hope’ to make it better.

Tinubu reassured them that when elected, he will do his best to tap the experience, knowledge and skills of technocrats from various parts of the country to address the challenges of the nation.

Shettima also applauded the audience, saying the wide acceptance of his joint ticket with the APC national leader demonstrates that Nigeria’s are moving beyond the politics of ethnicity and religious sentiments to considering capacity and excellence.

Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, who obviously seemed impressed with the dinner reception, appreciated the campaign patrons and advisers over their conviction to support the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.

“While promising to do his best to carry all Nigerians along, the campaign DG said the PCC members have vast experience, connections and followership to ensure the campaign does not derail.

“The DG said he was looking forward to having them in Jos for the flag-off of the campaigns which will herald the nationwide movement to engage the people,” the statement said.
