The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti has lost his campaign council chairman, Hon. Mazi Nnanna Ngwu, ABN TV reports.

Hon. Ngwu died on 23rd November 2022 in an undisclosed hospital in Owerri, Imo state after a brief illness.

He hails from Amuvi in Arochukwu LGA, Abia State.

Late Ngwu’s daughter Mrs. Chinatu Akwiwu confirmed his death to ABN TV in a WhatsApp message on Monday.

“It’s with deep sense of sorrow and sadness we announce the passing of our Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, pastor and Friend (Hon) Mazi Nnanna Ngwu.

“A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. These are very difficult times for the family,” she said.

Mrs. Akwiwu also announced that a service of songs will be held in her late father’s honour at his residence in Owerri, Imo state on Wednesday 18th January 2023 by 5pm.

She further announced that her late father will be laid to rest on 25/26 January 2023.

Hon. Ngwu was survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and siblings.

Court Sends APGA Factional Leader Edozie Njoku To Prison

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has ordered that a factional leader of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Edozie Njoku, and one other be remanded in prison over their alleged complicity in the forgery of a judgment of the Supreme Court.

Justice Mohammed Magudu, in a ruling on Monday, ordered that Njoku and his co-defendant, Chukwuemeka Nwoga be remanded in the Suleja prison in Niger State until November 30 when he would rule on their bail application.

Justice Magudu also set aside an arrest warrant earlier issued against the defendants.

Their lawyer, Panam Ntui had argued their bail application shortly after they pleaded not guilty to a 14-count charge filed in the name of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Prosecuting lawyer, Rimamsomte Ezekiel, objected to the bail application, arguing that the offences with which the defendants were charged are not minor, noting that some attract a maximum of 14 years imprisonment on conviction.

Ezekiel, who said he was ready for accelerated trial, told the court that the prosecution plans to call retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Mary Odili as a witness in the case.

Njoku and Nwoga are, in the charge marked: CR/12/2022 accused among others, of altering a judgment delivered by the Supreme Court on October 14, 2021 in the appeal marked: SC/CV/686/2021 and inserting Njoku’s name as the second defendant when he was never a party in the case.

The defendants were alleged to have written Justices Mary Odili, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Mohammed Garba, and Ibrahim Saulawa (who were members of the panel that delivered the judgment) to help insert Njoku’s name as the second respondent.

They were alleged to have procured the services of some officials of the court who helped to insert Njoku’s name on the judgment, which Njoku allegedly presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the IGP, claiming to have been declared APGA’s National Chairman by the Supreme Court.

Their arraignment was earlier scheduled for November 21, but they failed to attend court, following which the judge issued a bench warrant for their arrest.

According to their lawyer, the defendants came to court on their own volition on Monday before the police could execute the arrest warrant.

Comoros Ex-Leader, Sambi Bags Life Imprisonment Over Treason

A former President of Comoros, an island nation off Mozambique, Ahmed Abdallah Sambi has been found guilty of treason for selling passports to people from the Middle East and sentenced life imprisonment by a state security court.

The country’s former leader was charged with treason and the court said it found him guilty of selling Comorian passports to people in Gulf countries.

The sixty-four-year-old was not present in the court. He boycotted the hearing last week, claiming he would not get a fair trial.

Jon Fermon, a lawyer representing Sambi, termed the trial and the ruling illegal.

“The case should have been stopped. If the case went on, at least it should have been brought before a regular court established according to the law, which was not the case. If it was brought before a regular court established according to the law, it’s obvious for me President Sambi should be acquitted because there is not a piece of evidence,” he said.

Sambi has spent four years in jail for corruption.

The prosecution said the former president embezzled millions of dollars for the sale of passports to foreigners.

Fermon says they will take the case to the international forum to seek justice for Sambi.

“We will have to take this to the international scene,” he said. “There is no other choice than to take this out of Comoros and try to get it to the international attention for this case with U.N. bodies in Geneva with the French justice system, to which we will submit the question of this attempt buy a false witness statement… because there is no possibility to appeal the decision under Comorian law. So, there is no other choice than to go beyond Comoros to continue the struggle for justice for President Sambi.”

One of the defendants, Bashar Kiwan, a French-Syrian businessman, accused the current Comorian government led by President Azali Assoumani of pressuring him to testify against Sambi in exchange for a pardon, a claim the presidency Denies.

Sambi, after leaving power, was placed under house arrest for allegedly disturbing public order.

He ruled the East African nation from 2006 to 2011.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba on Monday, commissioned the Police Intelligence and Surveillance Centre built by the administration of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike administration to provide technical support to the police and other security agencies in the state.

Wike also restated his administration’s commitment to the protection of lives and property in the state, saying more investment would be made in providing security infrastructure.

The IGP, who hailed the governor for making the job of the police easy in the oil-rich South-South through the provision of key infrastructure, appealed to other state governments to provide similar facilities to make policing easier.

Baba arrived in the state to a full complement of salute by the Force’s Guard of Honour at the venue of the inauguration in Port Harcourt, the state capital, in the company of the governor.

While the interior of the building was not revealed for security reasons, the facility with at least 17 offices and conference rooms, is said to be equipped with the latest computerised security systems that can bring all part of Rivers to one point of view.

Yobe North: Machina Hails Court Judgement As Lawan Says He'll Not Appeal

The hope of returning to the Senate has again dimmed for the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan as the Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed Bashir Sheriff Machina as the authentic All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District.

The court upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu, Yobe State which held that the President of the senate Ahmad Lawan, is not the APC candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District in next year’s election into the National Assembly.

The court had submitted that Mr Lawan did not participate in the legally recognised primary election of the APC to select its candidate in the election held on 28th May 2022.

Delivering judgment on the appeal filed by the President of the Senate, a three-member panel of the appellate court led by justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, held that the primary election conducted by the party on 9th June is invalid as it was in breach of the constitution.

The law is settled as to the involvement of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in party primaries, which is to monitor, the primaries of 9th June were not monitored by the electoral commission.

The APC made a case at the appellant court for itself and it preferred candidate Ahmed Lawan but failed to make him a co-appellant.

Mr Lawan appeared in the case as the 2nd respondent indicating that he and the APC were working at cross purposes while trying to achieve a goal.

The appeal is unmeritorious as it fails in its entirety.

The appellant (APC) is to pay the sum of N1 million to the 1st respondent (Bashir Sheriff) as cost.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has dethroned three monarchs appointed by his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola.

Former Governor Oyetola had appointed several monarch few weeks before handing over government to Adeleke. These, including Akirun of Ikirun, Oba Yinusa Akadiri, Aree of Iree, Oba Ademola Oluponle and Oba Adegboyega Famodun.

The former governor also approved the appointment of 30 permanent secretaries into the various ministries.

However, Adeleke in statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed about 24 hours after inauguration announced that the thrones of Akirun of Akirun, Aree of Iree and Owa of Igbajo remain unoccupied pending the outcome of a Committee of Inquiry to review their appointments and subsequent installations.

According to the statement, the six Executive Orders issued by the governor which borders on reversal of monarchs appointments, appointment and placement of civil servants, employment and freezing of government accounts have been signed this morning and take immediate effect.

“All appointments of traditional rulers made by Osun State Government after 17th July, 2022, are hereby ordered to be reviewed to ensure there was strict compliance with due process of chieftaincy declarations and native law, custom and tradition relating to such chieftaincies. In the case of Ikirun, Iree and Igbajo, to avoid further breakdown of law and order, the appointments of Akinrun of Ikinrun, Aree of Ire and Owa of Igbajo are hereby put on hold pending review. Subsequently, the palaces of Akinrun of Ikirun, Aree of Iree and Owa of Igbajo should remain unoccupied, while security agencies are hereby ordered to take charge.

“All employments in the service of Osun State Government made in any capacity into any capacity in all the Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Commissions , Boards and Parastatals after July 17th, 2022 be and are hereby nullified”, he said.

The Governor, according to the statement, also ordered the reversal of appointments into civil service and directed head of government agencies to embark on staff audit immediately.

“All Heads of Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Commissions, Boards and Parastatals of Osun State Government are hereby directed to carry out an immediate staff audit of the actual number of government workers in their various Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Commissions, Boards and Parastatals, as at 17th July, 2022, and should file a report to the Office of the Chief of Staff to the Governor stating the full details and position/designation of each of the staff on the forwarded list , within 7 working days from the date of this Executive order using the attached Oath of Fidelity Template.

“All appointments in the service of Osun State Government made in any capacity into any capacity in all the Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Commissions, Boards and Parastatals after 17th July, 2022 be and are hereby reversed”, the statement reads.

Similarly, a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye ordered the immediate suspension of Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSIEC.

It reads, “The Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke has directed the immediate suspension of the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), Mr. Segun Oladitan and the following members of the Commission; Mr. Yusuf Oyeniran, Alhaja Suibat Adubi, Prince Yinka Ajiboye, Mrs. Abosede Omibeku, Mr. Dosu Gidigbi and Mr. Wahab Adewoyin

“This suspension is sequel to several petitions bothering on financial impropriety, dereliction of duty, absenteeism and abuse of office against the said Chairman and members of the Commission.

“Pending the outcome of investigation into the allegations against the suspended Chairman and members of the Commission, the Secretary to the Commission shall hold forth in running the affairs of the Commission”.

FG Shifts Abuja-Kaduna Rail Line Resumption Date

Abuja- Kaduna Train Services Resumes Operation

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Transportation has announced an extension of the resumption date for the Abuja-Kaduna rail services.

The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, disclosed this to newsmen in Kaduna on Sunday on an inspection tour to assess the state of readiness of the Abuja-Kaduna rail services before the commencement of operations.

He however did not give a specific date for the resumption but noted that it will not be more than a week.

According to the minister, the FG has introduced a new system of purchasing tickets, which he said is the beginning of security checks which will enable the government to ascertain who boards the train at every point in time.

It could be recalled that the FG last week announced that the Abuja-Kaduna rail services will resume operations on November 28, 2022.

The Abuja-Kaduna train service was temporarily halted eight months ago when terrorists planted explosives that derailed the train AK-9 while on its last lap from Abuja to Kaduna.

The terrorist had killed nine and abducted over 60 passengers, all of whom have been released.

Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has predicted that Nigeria will likely see an increase in COVID-19 cases and a decrease in hospitalisation over the holiday season this year.

In an exclusive interview, Adetifa claimed that the increase in travel over the holiday season might result in a rise in cases.

He said, “We are prepared to see that there may be a bump in cases just because of the increase in travel and the number of people returning. What we may not expect to see is an increasing number of people who are sick.”

The NCDC boss said vaccination and previous COVID-19 infections provided some degrees of immunity.

“The population has quite a bit of immunity due to vaccination, previous COVID-19 infection, or repeated COVID-19 infection. So. COVID-19 is not new. The Omicron is not new like it was in November (2021).

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has said the only political party existing in the state is the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and that the rest are mushroom political parties, some of which he has not heard before until recently.

Speaking at the official flag-off of the governorship, National, and state Assembly campaign in Umuahia on Thursday, the governor said some of those jostling to win elections in the state have no electoral value.

According to him, they were picked from the dustbin where the PDP dumps dissents and recalcitrant people and as such are no threat to the victory of the party’s candidates in the 2023 general elections.

“There is no other political party in Abia state apart from the PDP, I have seen some few individuals that are jostling for various offices in some small mushroom parties, some of them we’ve not heard about it before until late days.

“Incidentally the candidates of these small parties were shopped from the dustbin of the PDP, we have a big dustbin where we throw away relegated and recalcitrant people.

“They went there and picked a few dregs, individuals without consequence at all and of zero electoral value. That is why today we are sure and confident that all our candidates in the PDP will win elections clearly and squarely,” he said.

The governor said his administration has laid a solid foundation for a great Abia in the last seven years, saying he has developed a 30-year development plan for the state.

According to the Governor, his administration has made history by completing the first-ever flyover in the state in addition to the industrial development plan he has put in place in Abia.
