The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has enlisted the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency of Abia State, Rep. Sam Onuigbo as the authentic candidate of All Progressives Congress APC for Abia Central senatorial district.

This follows the ruling of Court of Appeal Owerri division which pronounced Onuigbo the authentic candidate for the senatorial district.

The court has sacked Hon. Emeka Atuma as the candidate of Abia Central Senatorial District, saying the election that produced him did not follow due process.

The lawmaker has since hailed the Appeal Court ruling which pronounced him the authentic candidate for the senatorial district, saying it is an indication that the judiciary remains the only hope of common man.

According to him, a lot of work was put into structuring the 2022 Electoral Act, expressing hope that as one of those who worked hard to ensure the actualisation of the piece of legislation, it will take the country’s democracy to the next level.

Former governor of Anambra state and the Presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi has been in the news in recent time. It is either he is being commended, supported or condemned, criticized over his quest to lead Nigeria from consumption to production.

Yesterday, an Anambra-born-business billionaire, Prince Arthur Eze, has condemned Obi’s ambition of becoming the next president of Nigeria after, President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Eze, while speaking at the occasion of the 2022 Ofala festival of HRH Igwe (Dr.) Robert Eze, the traditional ruler of Ukpo in Dunukofia local government area of the State, opined that he warned Obi to drop his ambition, but he wouldn’t listen.

He noted that he advised Obi to wait for next time after however listening to him lists the number of states he thought he would win.

His words: “I warned Peter Obi to withdraw from this race but he would not listen. I told him plainly that I am not part of his plans. I told him to drop his ambition, and wait for next time.

“When he told me about his ambition, I asked him the states he thinks he can win in the west and in the north – he told me; but I was not convinced. I told him he cannot not win; so that he would not waste his time and money.”

IGP Talks Tough Over Killing Of Lagos Lawyer By Policeman, Orders Speedy Investigation

The inspector-general of police, IGP Usman Baba has condemned the shooting and killing of Mrs Omobolanle Raheem, a lawyer who was allegedly shot and killed by a Policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State and ordered speedy investigation.

Force PRO, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the IGP, who described the incident as unfortunate and sad, has ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the ugly and unprofessional act, which doesn’t portray the Nigeria Police Standard Operating Procedure and core values.

In the same vein, the IGP commiserates with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased as he prays for the repose of her soul.

He also assured the general public of justice in the case while he warns officers and men of the Force to be professional and people-oriented in the discharge of their duties and operate within the ambit of the law, as the Force’s leadership will not condone any inappropriate or unprofessional acts.

Meanwhile, Police in Lagos State have arrested an assistance superintendent of police attached to Ajah division for allegedly killing the female lawyer on Christmas Day.

Lagos State Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Monday.

He stated that two other police officers who were with the ASP were also arrested for interrogation.

According to him, “The ASP that shot and two others with him have since been taken into custody.

“They are to be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for further investigations,.”

The spokesman stated also that the commissioner of police in Lagos State, Mr Abiodun Alabi, had been in touch with the family of the deceased and with the Nigerian Bar Association over the ugly incident.

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Party, ADP, in Abia State, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, has urged Abians not to vote for any candidate without investment in the state at the forthcoming governorship poll.

Bishop Onuoha who revealed he was a street tailor in the past, said he was coming to stitch the state in voted into power.

The cleric who stated this in Umuahia during the flag-off of the party’s campaign and unveiling of his running mate, Lady Glory Ngozi Nwasimuo, said the time had come for parasites not to be given an opportunity to leech the state.

He said only those who had in their private capacity, shown competence and those with identifiable investment in the state should be allowed to superintend over its affairs.

His words:“Any person who has not invested in Abia has no reason to come to rule Abia. I have invested in the state and have provided free medical treatment to Abians.”

The cleric who decried the miserable condition of pensioners in the state over pension arrears promised to include them in his Government.

“Retirees will form part of my cabinet, will evolve the entertainment industry to create people and raise young stars as well as infrastructural transformation in the state”.

He also promised to encourage Abians in the diaspora to invest in the state.

The Co-chair Interfaith and Peace Dialogue Forum also vowed to prioritize the fight against insecurity if voted into power.

He urged Abians to support his governorship ambition if they were truly desirous of an end to bad governance, and the beginning of a new dawn in 2023.

Presenting party flags to the candidates, the National Vice Chairman of ADC, Chief Anayo Arinze, boasted that ADC was the party to beat in 2023.

He described Bishop Onuoha as a God-sent solution to Abia’s multiple challenges orchestrated by bad leadership.

An international businessman and Chief Executive Officer of Embassy Wine World, Emeka Bassey Ekpe, has declared support for the re-election of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

The Ohafia-born businessman also promised to mobilised voters for Kalu, who is the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District.

He stated this in a chat with newsmen in Umuahia on Saturday evening.

According to Ekpe, Kalu’s performance in the Senate is unprecedented in the history of the state. He lauded Kalu for attracting quality projects to Abia North Senatorial District, urging the people of the zone to unite and reelect overwhelmingly.

“Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has performed wonderfully well as a Senator. His performance is not in doubt; even Mao Ohuabunwa his opponent would vote for him. No one is contesting against him because the people has seen his performance.

“We have had Senators before in our zone but none of them achieved half of what Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has done so far. This is an opportunity to announce my support for re-election,” he said.

Similarly, a political group in Abia State, Concerned Abians Development Initiative (CADI), has endorsed the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as its consensus candidate for the 2023 Abia North Senatorial election.

The Leader of the group, Dr. Lawrence Ubani, in a statement issued on behalf of the group members in Umuahia, stated that the entire stakeholders, various youth groups, traditional rulers and community leaders in the state were well pleased with the choice of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as the consensus candidate for Abia North Senatorial District election.

According to Ubani, “The group, therefore, calls on other candidates in the Abia North Senatorial race to accept the choice of Kalu for the interest of peace and development of the state and withdraw their aspirations to honour the decision of the leaders of the state.

“The group equally commends Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for redefining the business of lawmaking by attracting dividends of democracy to Abia North Senatorial District and Abia State in general. What you’re doing in Abia North is unprecedented in the history of Abia State. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has attracted development across the three Senatorial District. If others achieved half of what you’re doing today, Abia North and indeed Abia State would be first in road network in Nigeria.”

Ubani, who is a renowned medical doctor, further called on other candidates in the race to accept the choice of Kalu in the interest of peace, unity and progress of the state.

He however, maintained that what Kalu needed is the corporation of political stakeholders to bring more development to the Senatorial District and Abia State in general.

“This is the time to shun bitterness and unite for the overall development of the state. We have seen that the political atmosphere is filled with bitterness, acrimony and jealousy. We must set them aside, unite and support a performing lawmaker like Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to bring more development to our state. Those contesting against should immediately step down for down. The right thing to do is to commend Senator Kalu for what he is doing and even beg him to run in 2023. We are using this opportunity to tell his opponents to all down step and join hand with Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to bring more development to our state,” the statement said.

The Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, Ondo State has banned the employees of the institution from travelling out of the country without the permission of the governing board of the polytechnic.

The institution declared that any of its employees that flouted the order would be heavily sanctioned.

The Rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Emmanuel Fasakin, disclosed this at the institution’s Christmas Carol and Nine Lessons service held on the campus of the institution.

He said, “It is always my desire that we identify some members of staff who contributed exceptionally to the development of this institution in this course of the year, but some logistic hitches will not make that possible. Even if we will not be bringing individuals out to receive awards this year, I want you to know that I appreciate the efforts being made by individuals.

“Of particular interest to me are individuals who have decided not to join the ‘japa’ syndrome, especially in this dispensation when it has become the rave for people to run away from Nigeria. The droves of the people who ‘japa’ from the country fail to reflect on what will become of our dear country if everyone bails out because of the challenges we face. The country will be ruined completely.

“Well, I do not gloss over the myriad of challenges Nigeria is facing presently, but the situation calls for all well-meaning nationals to jointly find solutions so that our fatherland can be better. It is in the light of this that management has decided to invoke the full weight of extant regulations on those who have misused the various opportunities we are providing our personnel to develop for their selfish interests.

“No longer shall we condone travelling out of the country without adhering to the laid down guidelines. Members of the polytechnic should take cognizance that overseas training can only be approved by the governing council. Whosoever travels out of the country under whatever guise without the relevant approval from Council will have questions to answer, and if they cannot answer those questions satisfactorily, they may be sanctioned.”

The don, however, commended the employees who contributed to the development of the institution since the beginning of the year.

“Management does not treat the consistent contributions of members of staff and students to the growth of this institution with disdain, however minute such contributions may seem. As far as I am concerned, God is the arbiter of all issues and the true rewarder of human contributions. He is the one who sees in the dark and rewards in the open. What the Management does through giving awards to individual members of staff during this annual event is to appreciate those whose efforts are visible as a token of encouraging all staffers to give their very best at their respective beats to the service of the Institution,” Fasakin lauded.

 

After Killing Of Lawyer On Christmas Day In Lagos, Police Call For Calm

The Lagos State Police Command has urged Lagosians to remain calm, saying the Command will ensure justice prevails in the extrajudicial killing of a lawyer, Bolanle Raheem.

The Command’s spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement, expressed condolences to the family of the victim who was shot dead by a trigger-happy police officer in the Ajah area of Lagos on Christmas Day.

The police spokesman described as embarrassing, the incident, being the second in three weeks. A resident of Happy Land estate in Ajah, Gafaru Buraimoh, was similarly shot dead by a policeman on December 6, 2022.

Hundeyin said the Nigeria Police Force will carry out a reappraisal of its rules of engagement in a bid to put an end to such avoidable ugly incidents.

LAGOS STATE POLICE COMMAND CONDOLES WITH FAMILY, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES OF BARRISTER BOLANLE RAHEEM

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Abiodun Alabi, fdc has expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Barrister Bolanle Raheem who was shot dead by a police officer in Ajah on Sunday, December 25, 2022.

On the instruction of the Commissioner of Police, the errant officer has since been taken into custody alongside his team members. The CP has equally directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for in-depth investigation.

This has become one too many, especially bearing in mind that a similar incident occurred at the same location less than three weeks ago. The condemnable incident is against the standard operating procedures (SOP) and rules of engagement of the Force, and to say the least is embarrassing.

Beyond this incident, the Nigeria Police Force will carry out a reappraisal of its rules of engagement in a bid to put an end to such avoidable ugly incidents.

The Lagos State Police Command hereby appeals to the good people and residents of Lagos State to remain calm as the Command is already in constant touch with the Nigerian Bar Association and other relevant stakeholders towards ensuring that justice totally prevails.

The governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde, said he wanted to become a musician because of legendary King Sunny Ade’s performances.

Makinde make the disclosure in an exclusive interview with newsmen on Sunday as he marked 55th birthday.

According to him, “While growing up, I wanted to become a musician. Later, I thought I could be a boxer. I wanted to be a musician because of King Sunny Ade. He was probably the only one they used to show performing on television then.

“So, I asked my mother to buy a toy guitar for me and most times, I used to imitate KSA, thinking I would be a musician.”

Speaking further, Makinde said he later wanted to be a footballer but clash of club interest between him and his father ended his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

“Later, I watched the bout between Dele Jonathan and one white guy and I thought I would like to be a boxer too. During my latter days in primary school, we were always kicking football around our neighbourhood.

“I was quite good at dribbling and around 1976, lICC Shooting Stars FC won the African Cup Winners Cup for the first time. I went to the Liberty Stadium, during their trainings and I used to see Segun Odegbami, Best Ogedengbe, Muda Lawal and the rest. So, I thought yeah, I would be a footballer.

“I went to my father and told him I would like to be a footballer and he asked me which team I wished to play for and I said “Water Corporation.

“I believe Sam Ojebode was with Water Corporation then, but my father was an ardent supporter of Shooting Stars and that was the end of my dream of a professional football career because I mentioned the wrong club.

“Eventually, I still joined Greater Tomorrow at Yemetu and we played a number of matches together with some of my childhood friends who later went on to play professional football. But my father did not allow me to proceed with that dream.

“But by the time I got to Bishop Philips Academy, I played for the school team while I was in Form Two. The implication of that was that I was playing with older guys, but I still got into the first eleven of the team.

“By the time I got to Form Three, where we started real work academically and had begun to look at which direction to follow: Arts, Commercial, or Science, the dream of being a footballer fizzled out.”

The governor also revealed that “Back then, the best 30 students in Form Three would be taken to Science Class, which was always Form 4A. I was among the first three or so and I knew they would take me to Form 4A at that time. So I started thinking about what to do seriously.

“At that point, I thought of being a medical doctor or an engineer…”

Pope Francis Urges End To ‘Senseless’ War In Ukraine At Christmas Message

Pope Francis on Sunday appealed for an end to the “senseless” war in Ukraine, in his traditional Christmas Day message broadcast around the world.

The head of the Catholic Church addressed thousands of people gathered in St Peter’s Square, some of them holding Ukrainian flags, before delivering the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing (“to the city and the world”).

A call to peace is traditionally the focus of the pope’s message at Christmas, the holiday marking the birth of Christ, which he delivers from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica and is broadcast live worldwide.

The 86-year-old on Sunday first turned to “our Ukrainian brothers and sisters who are experiencing this Christmas in the dark and cold, far from their homes”.

“May the Lord inspire us to offer concrete gestures of solidarity to assist all those who are suffering, and may he enlighten the minds of those who have the power to silence the thunder of weapons and put an immediate end to this senseless war!” he said.

“Tragically, we prefer to heed other counsels, dictated by worldly ways of thinking,” he added, recalling “with sorrow” that “the icy winds of war continue to buffet humanity”.

‘Food as a weapon’

“Our time is experiencing a grave famine of peace also in other regions and other theatres of this third world war,” he said.

Francis referenced numerous countries in difficulty this Christmas, whether due to conflict or another crisis, from Afghanistan to Yemen, Syria, Myanmar, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Lebanon and Haiti.

For the first time, he also called for “reconciliation” in Iran, rocked by women-led protests for the past three months.

The pope has called for peace in Ukraine ever since Russia invaded its neighbour in February, condemning the war but seeking to maintain a delicate dialogue with Moscow.

However, he has been criticised in some quarters for not being more explicit in blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a magazine interview published last month, the Argentine pontiff denounced the cruelty of Russia’s troops in Ukraine, drawing a formal protest from Moscow.

On Sunday, the pope also urged those celebrating Christmas to remember those “who go hungry while huge amounts of food daily go to waste and resources are being spent on weapons”.

“The war in Ukraine has further aggravated this situation, putting entire peoples at risk of famine, especially in Afghanistan and in the countries of the Horn of Africa,” he said.

“We know that every war causes hunger and exploits food as a weapon, hindering its distribution to people already suffering.

“On this day, let us learn from the Prince of Peace (Christ) and, starting with those who hold political responsibilities, commit ourselves to making food solely an instrument of peace.”

Meaning of Christmas

On Saturday evening, the pope led the traditional Christmas Eve mass at St Peter’s Basilica, using a wheelchair as he continues to struggle with knee pain.

He prayed for “the children devoured by wars, poverty and injustice” and lamented that “men hungry for power and money swallow up their loved ones, their brothers”.

He called on people to “abandon the warmth of worldliness” and “rediscover the meaning of Christmas” in the face of “consumerism”, advocating for a Church that serves the poor.

The Vatican put the crowd Sunday at 70,000, while 7,000 people attended Saturday evening’s mass, with more following the service on screens outside.

“It’s very inspiring to be here with all these people,” Victoria Machado, who travelled with her family to the Vatican from Mexico, told AFP.

“We’re happy and moved to see the pope, even if we’re outside, and to feel this connection between each other,” the 19-year-old added.

Julie, a 50-year-old who manages a business in France, said the pope was a “very humble man, I think he’s capable of offering a message of peace and trying to unite people and ease tensions”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has underscored that he will retire to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State to rest and be far away as much as possible to avoid problems when he leaves office on May 29, 2023.

The President said this on Sunday when he received residents of the Federal Capital Territory on Christmas homage.

He further expressed appreciation to Nigerians for trusting, supporting and giving him the opportunity to serve as their leader.

Using the occasion to reassure Nigerians that he will not stay in office a day longer than the stipulated time, the President reminded the delegation, led by the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello that while he campaigned for the Office of the President, he took his time to visit the 774 local government areas of the country and got overwhelming support from the people.

He noted that in spite of technology, he will be safe there in Daura.

I’LL BE FAR AWAY FROM ABUJA AFTER MAY 29, 2023, PRESIDENT BUHARI TELLS FCT RESIDENTS AT LAST CHRISTMAS DAY HOMAGE

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday gave a firm indication that he will not by hanging around Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), after May 29, 2023, in order not to meddle in the affairs of the office of his successor.

The President was speaking to residents of FCT led by the Minister, Mohammed Musa Bello, who paid him the traditional Christmas Day homage.

At the last Christmas Day homage with the FCT community, comprising political, traditional and religious leaders, women and youth groups as well as public servants, the President reiterated that he would return to Daura, Katsina State, his hometown, at the end of his tenure.

He explained that his decision not to make Abuja a permanent abode is to allow his successor a free hand to operate and run the affairs of government.

The President also told members of the FCT community that he has not built a new house in Daura or anywhere and hopes to live in his same house, of many years.

President Buhari also used the occasion to commend the FCT Minister, saying he retained the cabinet position for so long because of his honesty and hardwork.

The President noted that he is aware that the office of the Minister of the FCT is burdened with requests for land allocation from highly placed Nigerians, who often dispose of their allocations for financial gains and other priorities.

He shared an anecdote of how someone close to him asked him to speak to the FCT Minster to allocate him a plot of land; he will sell it and use the money to marry another wife.

‘‘I was overwhelmed by the priority of some people who need a plot of land not to develop it but to sell it and marry another wife.

‘‘I don’t know how the Minister copes with such people who are extremely serious about such things. And I think about 45 per cent of those who have been given land allocation in the FCT have sold it and didn’t develop it according to the laid down criteria (master plan).’’

President Buhari thanked Nigerians for supporting his administration, recounting that during electioneering campaigns in the build-up to the 2015 and 2019 elections, he had travelled the length and breadth of the country seeking their support.

In his remarks, the FCT Minister expressed delight that the Christmas homage had returned after two years suspension due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

He prayed God Almighty to grant the President a peaceful and healthy retirement.

The Vice Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), FCT, Rev’d Stephen Panyan, commended the President for doing his best for the country and prayed that he will bequeath a legacy of fairness, justice, inclusiveness and management of diversity to Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of CAN National President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the religious leader reassured the President of the support of the Christian community to all his programmes to bring progress and prosperity to Nigeria.

‘‘At the twilight of your administration, we want to reassure you that the Christian community will continue to fully support you and pray that God will bless your efforts and that your desire to see the alleviation of the suffering of the citizens of this nation will begin to yield fruit.

‘‘May the Lord bless your work and see to the manifestation of your very noble desires,’’ the CAN leader prayed.

Stressing that the Christian community has not given up hope on Nigeria, Panyan encouraged the President to continue to do his utmost best for the country and citizens ‘‘he loves so much’’, while trusting God for divine intervention.

Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT and Senator representing Kogi West, Smart Adeyemi, declared that the nation’s capital has enjoyed religious harmony in the last seven and half years because of the good leadership of President Buhari.

He also lauded the President’s record on press freedom, freedom of expression and human rights.

He noted that in the midst of a barrage of criticisms of this administration, the President has never ordered the arrest, incarceration or harassment of any journalist or political opponent.

Adeyemi appealed to the President to use his good offices to ensure fairness and equity in the process of electing the next Governor of Kogi State, as witnessed in the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that produced Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as candidate and Senator Kashim Shettima as running mate.
