Distinguished Senator Nkechi Justina Nwaogu, the former Member, House of Representatives and former two term Senator for Abia Central senatorial zone has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a party she prides and hugs the limelight as Mama APC.
This defection, followed the outcome of the All Progressives Congress primary election, where her closest rival, Hon. Emeka Atuma was declared the winner. The result of the primary election and the process, didn’t go down well with her and she has remained silent over the issues.
Feelers that she was negotiating with the Nigeria Democratic Congress ( NDC) filtered the air over one week ago and APC Chieftains made frantic moves to pacify her. But with her latest moves, it is now obvious she has made up her mind to dump the ruling party.
However, there are legal implications over her moves, going by the recently passed electoral act, wherein the Independent Electoral Commission ( NEC), had already shutdown the window for new membership after the submission of E – registration by May 10, 2026, making defection almost impossible.
Some members of the National working committee who spoke with newsmen
are of the opinion that the court ruling, which provided a window for new defectors may fall flat if another Court of higher jurisdiction rules against the verdict. The sources are alleging the window provided by the Court ruling may be a dangerous ” bobby trap ” for NDC, if at a long run, the Court reverses the verdict.
Hence, barring any last minute changes, the official declaration will take place today in her Okpu Umuobo country home, ahead of the primary election slated for 29th May, 2026.
