The lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has declared that while he is not a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), he aligns with what he described as the “ideology of Biafra,” emphasizing that it reflects a broader aspiration for equity, development, and inclusion for the Southeast.
Aguocha made the statement during an interaction with journalists at his country home, where he addressed concerns surrounding agitation in the region and his position on related national issues.
According to him, the Biafra ideology should not be narrowly interpreted as a call for secession alone, but as a mindset rooted in the desire for economic advancement, regional development, and equal opportunities for Ndigbo within the Nigerian federation.
“I am not an IPOB member, but I believe in the ideology of Biafra,” he stated, explaining that many people from the Southeast see the concept as a push for rebuilding the region and creating a thriving economic environment capable of attracting investments and opportunities.
The federal lawmaker, however, distanced himself from violent methods associated with some aspects of the agitation, stressing that sustainable progress can only be achieved through peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue.
He maintained that true development of the Southeast would require deliberate efforts to address infrastructural deficits, improve federal presence, and ensure fair representation of Ndigbo in national affairs.
Aguocha further argued that agitation in the region is largely driven by perceived marginalization, noting that issues such as limited federal projects, lack of key institutions, and unequal access to opportunities continue to fuel dissatisfaction among the people.
While reaffirming his commitment to justice and equity, the lawmaker called on the Federal Government to pay closer attention to the concerns of the Southeast and adopt inclusive policies that would strengthen national unity.
He added that addressing these underlying grievances would significantly reduce tensions and create a more balanced and prosperous Nigeria for all citizens.
