New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has admitted the Reds still need reinforcements in the transfer market, while promising supporters an “intense, aggressive and vertical” style of football as he begins life at Anfield.
According to Reuters, Iraola said Liverpool are working to strengthen the squad before the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season after completing the arrivals of defender Jeremy Jacquet and winger Victor Munoz. The Spaniard acknowledged that more additions are required as the club looks to bounce back from last season’s disappointing fifth-place finish.
“Selfishly, I want the players here from day one for pre-season, but football doesn’t work like that. The club is working hard to get those signings done.”
The 44-year-old replaces Arne Slot, who was dismissed in May after Liverpool failed to secure Champions League qualification, and inherits a squad also dealing with the departures and injuries to several key players, including Mohamed Salah’s exit and long-term injuries to Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.
Speaking at his official unveiling, Iraola told reporters he wants to reconnect Liverpool with their supporters by building a team defined by relentless energy and attacking football.
“I want to give the supporters a team they can be proud of,” he said, according to the BBC.
“We have to be a team that works hard, is intense, aggressive and vertical so everyone can identify with us and feel comfortable supporting this team.”
The former Bournemouth manager, who guided the Cherries into Europe last season, said he understands the pressure that comes with leading one of football’s biggest clubs but believes he is ready for the challenge.
“I’m ready for it. I understand this is a massive club. Everything I say will be under scrutiny, but I don’t want to live in a bubble. I want to experience the city and everything that comes with managing Liverpool.”
Iraola also revealed he has already begun discussions with his players and coaching staff as he evaluates how best to implement his philosophy at Anfield.
While he expects Liverpool to continue playing high-intensity football, he admitted he may tweak certain aspects of his tactical approach after assessing the strengths of his new squad during pre-season.
The Spaniard confirmed Harvey Elliott will be given the opportunity to impress after a frustrating loan spell at Aston Villa, insisting the midfielder can use last season’s disappointment as motivation to fight for a place.
Liverpool begin preparations for the new campaign this week before opening the Premier League season away to Newcastle on August 23.
