President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigeria’s armed forces to intensify their efforts in resolving the country’s complex security challenges, asserting that a well-equipped military is essential for both national defense and the sustenance of democracy.
“A democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace. The defense of democracy requires a military that is well-prepared, well-trained, and well-equipped,” President Tinubu declared.
The President’s message was delivered by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima during the official induction of the Augusta A-109 Trekker helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet. The ceremony, held Friday at the Presidential Air Fleet premises in Abuja, coincided with NAF’s 61st anniversary.
Shettima noted that the arrival of the first batch of the helicopters underlines the federal government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the capabilities of the Air Force and the broader armed forces.
He emphasized that the newly acquired helicopters are expected to play a key role in tackling terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and other persistent security threats.
“The dynamic security landscape of our nation demands an agile, well-equipped, and responsive Air Force capable of rapid deployment across multiple theatres. This induction is not just about adding new helicopters to our fleet; it is a strategic statement of intent—a demonstration of our collective resolve to strengthen our armed forces, defend our nation, and reinforce Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa,” he said.
Shettima expressed confidence that the new platforms would enhance Nigeria’s combat capabilities both domestically and across the West African sub-region. He added that despite financial limitations, the Tinubu administration remains committed to bolstering national security through investments in equipment and capacity building.
He also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in combating cross-border crime. “The multinational collaboration to bring peace to the Lake Chad region is an example that must be improved upon and replicated wherever necessary,” he stated.
Underscoring the evolving nature of global conflicts, Shettima warned that Nigeria must stay vigilant and proactive. “The Nigerian Armed Forces must be prepared not only to address domestic security concerns but also to participate in regional and international peacekeeping efforts that promote stability and collective security,” he said.
NAF Chief Unveils Expansion Plan
Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, described the induction as a strategic enhancement of the NAF’s multi-domain operational capability.
“From 2024 to date, the Nigerian Air Force has received nine brand-new aircraft, including four C-129 attack helicopters, three King Air 360 aircraft, and the two Augusta 109s Trekker helicopters being inducted today,” Abubakar announced.
He revealed that the Air Force is poised to take delivery of 49 additional aircraft over the next two years. These include:
10 Augusta 109 Trekker helicopters
12 AH-1 Zulu Attack Helicopters
24 M-346 Ground Attack Aircraft
3 Kata 295 Medium Airlift Aircraft
Abubakar noted these assets will significantly strengthen the NAF’s precision strike, air mobility, and ground attack capabilities for counterterrorism and counterinsurgency missions.
To support the expansion, eight pilots and 18 engineers and technicians have already been trained for the Augusta 109s, while other personnel are currently receiving specialized training abroad with plans to transfer knowledge locally.
He also emphasized the Air Force’s growing focus on research and development. Notable achievements include:
The revalidation of Alpha Jet ejection seats
Retrofitting unserviceable 68 mm rockets
Development of a test kit for pyro cartridge impulse measurement.
In a major step toward self-reliance, Abubakar disclosed that a committee was recently inaugurated to commence local production of C-57mm rockets for NAF’s attack platforms.
He thanked President Tinubu for his unwavering support and also extended appreciation to Leonardo of Italy, the manufacturer of the Augusta helicopters, for the timely delivery of the first batch.
“These new platforms will be optimally deployed and maintained to serve the best interests of the nation,” he assured.
“Our gratitude also goes to our revered predecessors—former Chiefs of Defense Staff and Chiefs of their staff—whose guidance and dedication continue to inspire us.”
The induction of the Augusta A-109s marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military and address a range of security threats with enhanced precision, speed, and readiness.
