Former Abia State Governor and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has congratulated Remo Stars Football Club on clinching the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Senator Kalu, widely regarded as the African Pillar of Sports, praised the players for their outstanding performance, commended the club’s proprietor, Kunle Soname, for his visionary leadership, and lauded the officials for their commitment to excellence.
Remo Stars secured their first-ever top-flight league title with three matches remaining in the season—an achievement Kalu described as “well deserved and encouraging.”
Kalu, an avid football supporter, recalled his administration’s legacy during his tenure as Governor of Abia State (1999–2007), when Enyimba International FC dominated the domestic and continental football scene, winning the NPFL five times and lifting the CAF Champions League back-to-back in 2003 and 2004.
“Football brings people together and promotes peace and unity,” he said, while emphasizing the importance of grassroots sports development. He urged stakeholders in Nigeria’s sports sector to prioritize early talent discovery and nurture young athletes.
The seasoned lawmaker also called for increased private sector investment in sports, noting that the industry should be viewed not just as entertainment but as a viable business opportunity.
“Remo Stars have shown that with the right leadership, vision, and determination, private football clubs in Nigeria can achieve greatness,” Kalu added.
