Save Ogun Communities From Flood, Assembly Urges Commissioner

The Ogun State House of Assembly has charged the state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, to evolve more proactive measures to ensure improved flood and erosion control to save Ogun communities.

The lawmakers also asked Oresanya to address cases of indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the state.

ABNTV recalls that Ogun communities, especially Isheri, Sagamu, Abeokuta, Ilaro, Agbara and others have witnessed heavy flooding in the year 2023.

While defending the Ministry of Environment‘s 2024 budget before the Ogun State House Committee on Finance and Appropriation on Wednesday, the lawmakers enjoined Oresanya to address the issues of erosion in rural communities.

Members of the Committee on Finance and Appropriation led by Hon. Musefiu Lamidi, had outlined the various communities in their constituencies where flooding and indiscriminate dumping of refuse by individuals and industrial organisations had caused environmental havoc.

They further admonished the Ministry to ensure strict adherence to environmental policies, while embarking on more enforcement drive across the three Senatorial Districts of the state.

A statement by the Ogun Assembly Media disclosed that the ministry was implored to ensure holistic implementation of its 2024 budget “to address erosion prone challenge being faced by the rural communities in the State.”

In his reaction, Oresanya noted that the ministry had embarked on an impact assessment of some affected areas across the State in conjunction with some State and Federal Agencies.

Oresanya added that the ministry would continue to pursue its core mandate of making the environment clean and safe for all.
