The Nasarawa State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the tragic deaths of five children in the Agyaragu community of Obi Local Government Area.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ramhan Nansel, the lifeless bodies of the children were discovered inside an abandoned, non-functional vehicle parked at the home of one Mr. Abu Agyeme.
Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and directed a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. He also extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.
In his statement, the commissioner urged parents, guardians, and vehicle owners to remain vigilant and prevent children from accessing parked or abandoned vehicles without supervision.
The tragic discovery was made on Sunday around 5:30 p.m., when a resident, Mr. Ozimna Ogbor, reported the case to local authorities. The victims, all between the ages of six and ten, were found locked inside the vehicle.
Police officers responded promptly and evacuated the children to Aro Hospital in Agyaragu, where a doctor confirmed that they had died from suspected suffocation.
“This heartbreaking incident serves as a grim reminder of a similar tragedy that occurred in August 2019,” said Nansel.
Due to the severity of heat-related injuries on the bodies, the remains were released to the families upon request for burial.
