Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment, and that of the party, to change the political narrative of the country if given the opportunity to serve as president.

Obi made this appeal, yesterday, in Owerri, Imo State capital, during the official campaign flag off of the governorship candidate of the party, Athan Achonu, for the November 11 election in the state.

At the event, Obi, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, solicited the support of the Imo electorate for Achonu, in the forthcoming election.

They insisted, against all insinuations, that Achonu is the person recognized by the party as its candidate for the poll.

Obi said: “I have said privately and publicly that I will change Nigeria if given the opportunity. We, in LP, know what it takes to change Nigeria. You can hold us by our words. I think Nigeria needs leaders who will do what they say or promise.

“As for me and all of us in LP, Achonu is our candidate. The process that produced him as our candidate was free, fair and recognised by our party.”

Otti and Abure said they were witnesses to the congress that produced Achonu as the party’s candidate, describing the exercise as free, fair and credible.

Otti said: “I am a witness to Sen. Athan Achonu’s emergence being that I was at the congress that produced him as our party’s candidate for Imo governorship election. So I can tell you that the full weight of the party is behind him.”

In his speech, Achonu said he would prioritize issues of insecurity, rural development, unemployment, as well as guarantee financial autonomy for council areas in the state if elected.

He said the November 11 governorship poll would provide Imo people the opportunity “to reverse the current trajectory of inept and ineffective governance that have destroyed hopes and aspirations of our people.”

He said: “My commitment to the common good has never been in doubt. It is my belief, if given the opportunity and privilege to serve you as governor, that I would be completely dedicated to the development of our state by creating sustainable pathways and enabling environment for the restoration of security in the state, thus paving the way for increased investment in lgbo land.”
