Former Benue State Governor Senator Gabriel Suswam has issued a stark warning that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could collapse before the 2027 elections unless its leadership takes decisive action to address the party’s ongoing issues.
The PDP is currently embroiled in a leadership struggle over who should be appointed as the national secretary. In addition, the party recently faced a wave of defections, with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and other former leaders and members of the PDP joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the state.
Speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, Suswam emphasized the party’s precarious position, stating, “A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party.” He added that many members have lost faith and now question the party’s ability to survive.
Despite this, Suswam acknowledged that efforts led by PDP governors and former governors, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, may help steer the party back on course. He noted, “Whether there is light at the end of the tunnel in the efforts made by Senator Saraki will be seen in the next two weeks. For now, I would say that PDP Is it in the hospital? Yes. Is it in the ICU to some extent? Yes, it is. Can it be rescued? Yes, if the proper medicine is applied.”
Suswam further compared the PDP’s situation to that of a patient in critical care, stating that the party’s survival chances were currently 50-50. He warned that if Saraki’s team fails to succeed, the party may not endure.
