Open University Students Protest Fee Hike

Students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Lagos State have protested the increment in their tuition.

The protest held at the university’s McCarthy Study Centre in Obalende, with the students carrying placards with different inscriptions in protest.

According to the students, the hike was a sole decision of the school which they only knew of while registering for a new semester.

A student, who begged for anonymity, said the school fees increased from N18,000 per semester to N30,000 for returning students, while new students who should pay N36,000 will now pay N55,000.

He said: “Final year project levy has increased from N15,000 to N25,000 for returning students. Course registration for one-unit course was N1,000 before, but now it’s N3,500, while two and three-unit courses are now N4,000 and N5, 000.”

The institution’s spokesman, Ibrahim Sheme, said the school is looking into the students’ agitation and would respond appropriately.
