The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) recently conducted a firsthand assessment of the erosion-affected areas in Ebem Ohafia, located in the Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State. This visit aimed to evaluate the damage and suggest immediate interventions.

The assessment took place on Monday, August 4, 2026, with the NEMA team being guided through the impacted sites by the Deputy Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area.

Upon their arrival, the officials were warmly welcomed by the President General of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), represented by the First Vice President General, Chief Ogwo Ukpola Eke, affectionately known as Triple. They were joined by Chief Mba Ibe, the Mgbaga Ebem Community Leader, along with youth leaders and other key community figures.

This visit is part of NEMA’s ongoing initiative to document the communities suffering from gully erosion and other ecological disasters throughout Abia State, aiming to provide recommendations for potential government action.

During the inspection, community leaders highlighted the increasing danger that the erosion sites pose to homes, farmland, access roads, and the overall safety of residents. They urged NEMA and the Federal Government to step in urgently before the situation deteriorates further, warning that ongoing rainfall could exacerbate property damage and displace families.

The leaders emphasized that erosion has become a persistent environmental issue in Ebem Ohafia, necessitating a thorough and sustainable solution rather than just temporary fixes.

While speaking during the visit, the Deputy Mayor reiterated the commitment of the Ohafia Local Government administration, under the leadership of Mayor Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, to collaborate with relevant state and federal agencies to tackle the ecological challenges facing communities in the area. The Deputy Mayor assured residents that the local government would continue to advocate for their needs.
