The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned citizens about the spread of unapproved and potentially fake toothpaste products falsely linked to Colgate.
In a statement shared on its X platform on Sunday, the agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate had received a complaint about the sale of the items in Kaduna State, prompting an immediate probe.
According to NAFDAC, inspectors traced the products to a retail outlet where they uncovered two suspicious items labelled “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g,” believed to be imitations.
“The shop owner informed the team that the products were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative; however, no proof of purchase was provided.
“These products have not met the required regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance, thereby posing a potential risk to public health and safety,” the agency said.
The regulator confirmed that the suspected counterfeit goods have been withdrawn from the market, while efforts are ongoing to trace those behind their distribution.
Further details showed that the affected items — “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” — lack essential identification markers such as batch numbers and NAFDAC registration codes.
Labels on the products claim they were produced by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, based in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with manufacturing dates listed as August 2025 and expiry dates of August 2029.
NAFDAC noted that all zonal directors and state coordinators have been instructed to step up monitoring efforts and remove any remaining counterfeit products from circulation.
The agency urged wholesalers, retailers and the public to remain vigilant, advising them to carefully check the authenticity and physical state of products before purchase or use.
Consumers were also encouraged to report any suspected fake or substandard goods to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or send an email to [email protected].
Healthcare professionals and patients were further advised to report any side effects associated with the products through official reporting channels, including the agency’s website and the Med-Safety mobile application.
