Foremost Nigerian food and drug regulator, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has confirmed placing a ban on the importation of Indomie noodles into the country.
This is in connection with alleged discovery of a cancer-causing chemical in the noodles and failure to obtain registration certificate from the agency.
The agency’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye told reporters in Abuja on Monday that her office commenced investigation immediately it got wind of the recall of the products in Taiwan and Malaysia.
“Tomorrow, May 2, 2023, NAFDAC’s food safety and applied nutrition directorate will randomly sample Indomie noodles (including the seasoning) from the production facilities while post marketing surveillance directorate samples from the markets”, she stated.
The Africa’s largest population is a food import-dependent nation amidst clamour to revolutionalise agriculture in the 200 million population country.
The country’s data office, National Bureau of Statics (NBS) says on the second quarter of 2022, about N464.45 billion was expended in food importation.
