Lassa Fever Kills 142 Persons In 23 States

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the country has documented 784 confirmed cases of Lassa fever, with 142 deaths across 23 states in less than three months.

The NCDC stated Wednesday on its official website that the infections were documented from January 1 to the present.

According to the Nigerian News Agency, Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus.

According to the NCDC, the number of new confirmed cases reduced from 70 in Week 10 of 2023 to 38 in Epidemiological Week 11.
According to the study, the instances were reported in the states of Edo, Ondo, Ebonyi, Bauchi, Taraba, Benue, Rivers, Plateau, and Nasarawa.

According to the study, 142 deaths were reported from Epidemiological Week 1 to Week 11, with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.1%, which was lower than the 18.7% CFR for the same time in 2022.

According to the NCDC, 23 states and 97 local government units have at least one confirmed case.

According to the study, 71% of all new confirmed Lassa fever cases were reported in Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi, while 29% were reported in six other states.
It stated that of the 71%, Ondo had 32%, Edo had 29%, and Bauchi had 10%.

According to the NCDC, the most affected age group is 21-30 years old, with a median age of 32 years.

According to the report, the male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases was 1:0.9.

It also stated that the number of suspected cases increased when compared to the same period in 2022.
