The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed strong confidence in its chances of winning the upcoming July 12 local government elections, provided the polls are conducted in a free and fair manner.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos, the party’s Deputy Chairman in the state, Mr. Olusupo Ajayi, emphasized the party’s readiness and optimism ahead of the elections.
According to NAN, 26 chairmanship candidates from the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party emerged on Friday to contest in the local government polls. The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has scheduled the elections to take place across all 57 local government areas and local council development areas.
Ajayi described the delegate-based primary elections conducted in 26 local councils as both peaceful and successful. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to running a vigorous campaign to secure victory.
“Remember, we had the highest number of votes in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election,” Ajayi noted, adding that the LP continues to enjoy strong support from Lagos residents who still believe in the party’s vision.
“This is a grassroots election, and we are committed to delivering real change, even though we’re up against the ruling party,” he said.
He further stated that the party would operate within legal boundaries to mobilize voters and conduct a robust, community-focused campaign across the state.
Ajayi also pledged that the LP would prioritize community engagement and grassroots governance if elected, stressing that their involvement in the local government elections is part of a broader effort to rebuild trust in politics and return power to the people.
He called on the chairperson of LASIEC, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, to maintain transparency and fairness throughout the electoral process.
“In the end, we all return to dust. What truly matters is the goodwill we leave behind for our children and future generations,” Ajayi said.
“I hope she upholds her integrity so that her legacy will stand the test of time.”
