The Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State, Victor Ormin, has imposed a daily restriction on movement into and out of the LGA from 6:30 p.m., citing growing insecurity and persistent loss of lives.
Speaking by phone on Monday, Ormin told our correspondent that the measure was a precautionary step to protect lives and ensure safety in the area.
“Due to escalating insecurity in Gwer West LGA territory, I have directed that people coming into Gwer West LGA and those going out to other places are to do so within the stipulated time of 6:30pm,” he said.
The chairman revealed that two individuals were killed early Monday along the Makurdi–Naka Road by suspected armed herders.
“For instance, today, two people were killed along the Makurdi/Naka road, and their motorcycle was burnt down,” Ormin stated.
He further lamented that the area has experienced near-daily killings, leaving many residents gripped by fear.
“Some people passed through our territory without knowing there was a problem, but now we have come out publicly and warned them,” he explained.
“But if they insist, let it not be that we did not give warning.”
Gwer West LGA shares borders with Gwer East, Makurdi, Otukpo, and Agatu LGAs and also lies along critical transport corridors, including the Makurdi–Ankpa route in Kogi State and the Makurdi/Otukpo/Enugu federal highway.
Ormin described the curfew as a temporary measure that will be reviewed as the security situation improves.
The council area has been one of the hardest hit by violent attacks, with suspected Fulani herdsmen responsible for numerous deadly raids over the last decade. According to the chairman, all 15 council wards have been affected, with several communities now deserted and allegedly occupied by armed herders.
